It was another poor display by the Republic, who have only won one of their six Group B qualifiers so far.

Stephen Kenny speaking on RTE after the game: "It is a game we were desperate to win and we didn't want to lose, so everyone is hugely disappointed.

"We conceded two goals that were preventable. We had more shots than them, but they were more ruthless than us.

"For the first goal, we didn't mark in the box and it was a quality cross and finish, but we can't give free headers and we got punished.

"We had a lot of pressure, corner kicks and we conceded right on half-time which was a killer.

"They defended well, we played better in the second half, the players gave everything and pushed, but we couldn't find the goals.

"We shouldn't be losing to Greece at home, we know that."

Liam Scales speaking on RTE after the game: "It is a disappointing result, but I am delighted to make my debut and I enjoyed it.

"It has been a whirlwind the last couple of months and I have been taking it all as it comes.

"I think they were more clinical than us, we could have taken our chances and defended our box better to get a result.

"That goal before half-time was sloppy and it killed us."

It's very difficult to come back from this. This is very low.

It's simply not good enough. Where do Republic of Ireland go from here? I don't know.

We need someone in charge who can give them belief.

I thought there would be a lift in second half but it was flat.

Chiedozie Ogbene speaking to RTE after the game: "I think the first 10 minutes we started well, we should have been 2-0 up. I don't think we deserve to be two goals down in the first half, we created enough chances in the first half, but I don't think we were clinical enough.

"I'm disappointed, there is not much to say. We weren't sharp enough today."

Just like the game in Athens, the Republic were poor on the night, with first half goals from Giorgos Giakoumakis and Giorgos Masouras enough for the victory for Greece, although it could have been by a greater margin.

That is now five defeats in six qualifiers for the Republic in Group B.

There are five minutes of injury time for the Republic of Ireland to pull off the unlikeliest of comebacks.

Greece make two further changes with the victory all but assured.

Konstantinos Koulierakis comes on for goal scorer Giorgos Masouras, with Manolis Siopis replacing captain Tasos Bakasetas.

Bit of confusion as to how many substitutes have been made by Gus Poyet, but that is soon resolved.

The manager refuses to change his style of football. "This is the way we play and we're going to stay with it."

Mikey Johnston has been bright since his introduction from the bench and wins then takes a short corner before delivering a deep cross to Matt Doherty.

His close range effort is turned away by Odysseas Vlachodimos.

The Nottingham Forest goalkeeper has largely been a spectator in this game, but produced a big save there.

Tasos Chatzigiovanis drives forward before picking out fellow substitute Fotis Ioannidis, with the forward's header dropping just over the crossbar.

A number of substitutes for both sides.

Firstly for Greece, their goal scorer Giorgos Giakoumakis makes way for Fotis Ioannidis.

For the Republic, Alan Browne and Will Smallbone make way for the more attack minded duo of Mikey Johnston and Callum Robinson.

Liam Scales does well to block Tasos Chatzigiovanis's goal bound effort.

Petros Mantalos fed the substitute who was allowed to come inside before getting a shot off.

I'm wondering can we get a goal to get ourselves back into this game but everywhere I look I am not seeing a chance of goal. Ogbene possibly but not really.

Gus Poyet opts to make a double change, with Greece cruising in Dublin.

Dimitris Pelkas, who is on a yellow card, and Dimitris Kourbelis depart to be replaced by Tasos Chatzigiovanis and Andrea Bouchalakis.

A long-range strike from Jason Knight flashes wide of the far post. The Republic have enjoyed more possession in the last five minutes, but have been unable to create any clear-cut opportunities.

Shane Duffy winces as another chance for the Republic from a set-piece goes astray.
