Giorgos Giakoumakis is incensed that he has not been awarded a penalty after he took a tumble in the box from a clumsy challenge from Matt Doherty.

The referee is unmoved and the Wolves defender seems to have got away with one there as he did appear to haul down the Greek striker.

On early evidence it seems that Stephen Kenny has went with four at the back, with Liam Scales filling in at left back and Matt Doherty deployed in a more traditional right back role.

Will Smallbone is the furthest forward of the midfield trio, with Chiedozie Ogbene and Jason Knight playing either side of Evan Ferguson.

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Greece

Petros Mantalos, who was so influential for Greece in this fixture in June, is at the heart of the visitors' first real sight of goal.

He plays a neat exchange of passes with Lazaros Rota before shooting from inside the area, with Josh Cullen blocking his effort before it could trouble Gavin Bazunu.

Although the Republic dealt easily with that shot it was a sign of what Mantalos can do when he is given time and space.

Evan Ferguson is inches away from opening the scoring!

The Brighton frontman drifts inside and with his weaker left foot takes aim, with his low strike bouncing off the base of the post.

The Republic have looked dangerous so far when venturing forward and will want to replicate the fast start they made against the Netherlands.

Greece still have a real chance of qualifying for next year's tournament in Germany, and won their last qualifier 5-0 against Gibraltar at home.

Their 3-0 reverse against the Netherlands three days prior to the Gibraltar victory was a blow to their hopes, but a win this evening would set them up well for their meeting with the Dutch on Monday.

Their main threat is Olmpiacos' Giorgos Masouras, who has four goals in five Euro 2024 qualifying appearances, netting those goals from just six shots on target. He also netted the winner against the Republic of Ireland in June.

Republic of Ireland v Greece (19:45 BST)

It was a night to forget for the Republic in Athens in June as they lost 2-1 in the Greek capital.

Greece dominated the early stages and opened the scoring through Anastasios Bakasetas' penalty.

Nathan Collins gave the Republic hope when he equalised from close range before the half-hour mark.

But Giorgos Masouras' 49th-minute strike sealed the win for the home side.

The Republic's misery was compounded when Matt Doherty was shown a straight red card deep in injury time after clashing with Kostas Tsimikas and Giorgos Tzavellas as Irish frustrations spilled over following a disappointing performance.

That result extended the Republic of Ireland's winless record against Greece to four games, three of those they have lost and one they have drawn.

  16. Must-win encounter for the Republicpublished at 19:16 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

Republic of Ireland v Greece (19:45 BST)

Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of this evening's Euro 2024 qualifier between the Republic of Ireland and Greece at the Aviva Stadium.

It a must-win qualifier for the Republic who will be out of contention for qualification for the finals in Germany if they lose to Greece, or if they draw and the Netherlands beat France.

Greece got the better of Stephen Kenny's side in Athens, and given they still have a very real chance of pipping the Netherlands to second place in Group B, they will also want to come away from this game with three points.

It promises to be an entertaining encounter in Dublin.

Thanks for joining us - enjoy!
