  7. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:42 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

    Republic of Ireland 0-2 Greece

The Republic have a mountain to climb in the second half after a disappointing first period.

After a promising start to the game, which saw Will Smallbone force a save from the goalkeeper and Evan Ferguson hit the post, they allowed Greece to grow into the game, and were eventually punished by Giorgos Giakoumakis with his fine header.

Just when they picked the pace up again at the end of the half, Greece struck again through Giorgos Masouras in first half stoppage time.

It is hard to see a way back into the game for the Republic now.

A huge blow for the Republic at the end of the half as Greece double their lead from a clinical counter-attack.

Giorgos Giakoumakis drives forward and finds Dimitris Pelkas at the back post.

He miscues a shot, but it falls to Masouras, who gets his fifth goal in qualifying with a low finish.

Good defending from Kostas Tsimikas prevents Chiedozie Ogebene from getting on the end of Liam Scales' inviting cross.

The Liverpool defender ushers Ogebene out of the way before he could get his head to the ball.

The Republic have upped the tempo at the end of the half.

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Greece

The Republic are almost made to pay for their own mistake with Gavin Bazunu tipping Dimitris Pelkas' rising strike over the crossbar.

Evan Ferguson conceded possession and Petros Mantalos fed Giorgos Giakoumakis, who in turn played a cute pass for Pelkas to run on to and get a shot on target.

It is all a bit too easy for Greece going forward at the moment.

    Republic of Ireland 0-1 Greece

Chiedozie Ogbene has been the Republic's greatest attacking threat so far and wins a free-kick after drawing a foul from Kostas Tsimikas.

The resulting delivery from Will Smallbone falls to the Luton forward, but his shot is charged down and blocked.

The Republic will need to get him and Evan Ferguson more involved if they want to find a route back into this game.

After the ball bounced kindly for Kostas Tsimikas the Liverpool full-back comes inside and whips in a delightful cross for Giakoumakis, who rises highest to power home an unstoppable header into the top corner.

A delightful goal, but a sucker punch for the Republic.
