Better news for England from the other game in Group C. Malta lead Ukraine. There's a long way to go, but if that stays the same way, England will qualify regardless of the result tonight at Wembley.

Suddenly, England look fragile as Davide Frattesi tries to get in, but Kyle Walker is strong to hold him off.

A superb move from the Italians.

From deep in the left back position, Udogie bursts up the pitch as we have seen him do for Spurs this season, past Bellingham, and switches the ball out to the right hand side.

Rice can't stop the run down the channel, the cross comes in from Di Lorenzo and it is missed initially by Fratesi. Scamacca is there to take full advantage.

How swift was that attack, so quick from back to front.

    England 0-1 Italy

Scamacca has scored his first international goal for Italy, on what is his 13th appearance for the senior national side.

It leaves England with a lot of work to do. Remember they need a point to qualify.

England had started this game really well and on top. That must be Italy's first shot on target. Scamacca fires the ball into the roof of the net. All started from that cool turn from Donnarumma.

    One shot, one goal!

Italy's first attack yields the opening goal.

Declan Rice misses his tackle and the team in blue take full advantage, sending in Giovanni Di Lorenzo down the right for a low, pulled back cross that is dummied by one team-mate and then fired in by ex-West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca.

Confident lad, Gianluigi Donnarumma. Harry Kane is closing in but he turns away from him with ease.

It's not been a lightning-fast start, but England have had the best of it. Italy yet to get anywhere near Jordan Pickford or the goal he's guarding.

Philips is a talent for sure but to echo most England fans, how can he play when not playing for his club. Would love to see us utilise our attacking talent and have Madders or Trent in that midfield alongside Rice & Bellingham.

Nick: Kalvin Phillips looks well off the pace already. Not surprising really given he can't even get a kick for City even though Rodri is suspended. Very odd selection

JoeD: Philips booked after eight mins because he's hardly played this season and is rusty. If he goes on to be sent off, that'll really put the pressure on Southgate and his stubbornness.

Marcus Rashford is the man that hits it. It's dipping, but not enough to see it slip into the top corner. Decent effort, though.

Giorgio Scalvini has a bad touch and then runs like he's in treacle. It allows Harry Kane to catch him, poke the ball away and force the Italian defender into a panicked clearance.

Moments later, Kalvin Phillips is fouled 30 yards from goal and England have a free-kick that someone will fancy hitting...

That was the sort of tackle from Kalvin Phillips where you can tell he hasn't had many minutes. The gauge is out a little bit.

It looked like one of his trademark crunching tackles but he just mistimed it on that occasion.

Not ideal to pick up a yellow card so early on.

Two in as many minutes. Destiny Udogie pulls back Phil Foden, who would have been away otherwise. It's a nailed on card.

Kalvin Phillips has risked a couple of early challenges. The ref let him off for his high foot but not this late lunge, which leaves him facing over 80 minutes on a yellow.

    Oh, almost!

Marcus Rashford drives forward, looks for a one-two win Harry Kane but Kalvin Phillips is in the mix and the ball doesn't quite reach the Man Utd forward.

It's a corner, though, and Harry Maguire is in the mix looking to head home before an Italy man stands firm to nod away.

    Interesting start to the game.

England look like they have control of things at the moment, Bellingham in particular seeing plenty of the ball early on.

Italy are just trying to feel their way into things, being a bit cautious and keeping it around the back and taking their time.

    Brilliant from Declan Rice.

He sniffs out the danger as Italy come forward through midfield and steps in with the minimum of fuss to win the ball.

A lovely England move. Declan Rice gets out of trouble in his own box, Harry Kane turns and finds Kyle Walker, but the full-back's cross is too deep.
