What is an interesting sign [of where Gareth Southgate sees Alexander-Arnold playing], is when the squad goes out on the various social media channnels, he's always included in the midfielders section. Gareth will have had a big say in that, it will have been signed off by someone to go out like that.

In terms his situation being more complicated with the national team - I think it depends how clear the coaching is when you go.

Looking at what Trent does for Liverpool, he's doing it now, coming into midfield. He has an understanding of it [playing in a hybrid midfield role] anyway. I think he's absolutely perfect for that role.

It is a tough way to play, the inverted role if not everyone in the squad is used to that system so doing it in a major tournament is then a bit tricky. Whether England decide to put him there in a major tournament, well we'll hopefully see in the near future.

Gareth Southgate has stuck by Harry Maguire through thick and thin, he really has, it has been such a difficult period for the player. I have to say that I admire the way Maguire has performed for England during this period.

There is one thing being judged and booed for a career choice you have made or for a political reason, as Jordan Henderson was at the weekend, but it is another being judged so harshly for your professional quality or what is seen of it.

That is a really hard thing to block out and overcome, and to still step up on this stage without having played club football is really impressive.

It doesn't surprise me that his name is on the teamsheet again in a massive game alongside a well known partner in John Stones, who has also played few minutes this season albeit through injury.

It seems this is the go-to partnership for Gareth Southgate in these big moments.

I think it will start to become a problem if Kalvin Phillips and Harry Maguire don't end up getting regular minutes for the remainder of the season.

To be fair to Gareth Southgate, he has always been quite consistent in his selections, and that brings a sort of club feel to England.

His approach is, 'Well these players have done well for me in the past. Yes they aren't getting as many minutes for their clubs at the moment, but for England their performances have been consistent, so I will continue to rely on them.'

But we are in October now. If by the end of the season, around May time, they have barely played, then they surely can't be in a position to go out and perform in a major tournament.

Ollie Watkins has played nearly 40 games per season and got into double figures for goals every year. He didn't let his head drop during that time not being selected, which was a long period, and he came back and delivered a goal [against Australia].

Harry Kane is always going to play, there is no doubt about that. If he is available he will play. However you do need top players to back him up.

Ultimately if 'it' did happen, if Kane got injured, then there is somebody there in Watkins who can take the mantle and can score goals. The other options you're not quite sure. With Callum Wilson there seems to always be injuries to contend with, we don't know how Ivan Toney will come back after his ban.

England captain Harry Kane, speaking to Channel 4 about if there's revenge on the mind after losing to Italy in the Euro 2020 final: "Of course there are some memories there, especially in this stadium but we just have to focus on tonight.

"It would be great to beat them here at Wembley obviously but in football you move on and focus on the next challenge and tonight it is about getting qualification for the next Euros."

The barracking of England players by their own fans has been something of a theme of late, with Harry Maguire also getting stick from some Three Lions supporters.

Uefa - European football's governing body - has announced a moment of silence will be held at all Euro 2024 qualifiers on Tuesday in memory of the two victims of the shootings in Brussels.

The Metropolitan Police said: "Given the events yesterday in Brussels, those attending the match can be reassured that they will see a highly visible policing presence.

"Officers are there to ensure the event passes off safely and provide reassurance to those attending."

French authorities are doubling security for Tuesday's friendly between France and Scotland in Lille, less than 60 miles from Brussels.

Players and officials were told at half-time of the events that had taken place in Brussels, with the score 1-1. Sweden captain and Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof said security put the team "at ease".

"They explained that this is the safest place to be in Brussels," he said.

Lindelof said he saw "no reason" to replay the game as Belgium have qualified for Euro 2024 and Sweden can no longer do so.

Writing on X - formerly Twitter - on Tuesday, Lindelof said: "I'm shocked and devastated by the terrible incidents in Brussels with the cold-hearted attacks on our fellow Swedes.

"I'm lost for words for the cruelty and inhumanity. I want to send my deepest condolences to the families and friends of those affected.

"At the same time, my thoughts go out to all the supporters in Belgium last night. No-one should ever go to a game of football and feel unsafe when supporting their team."

You'll probably be aware now of the awful incident that took place in Brussels last night, with two Swedish people shot dead.

Sweden's Euro 2024 qualifier against Belgium was abandoned at half-time for security reasons.

An evacuation of the King Baudouin Stadium began at about 22:45 BST, with the last fans and staff leaving at 03:00 (04:00 local time).

The Sweden players have flown home and will return to their clubs.

On Tuesday morning, police in Brussels shot the attacker dead.

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Belgium Prime Minister Alexander de Croo called the killings "a harrowing act of terrorism".

The Swedish Football Association (SvFF) said it received news of the killings just before the match, but it started as planned because Belgian authorities and police considered the stadium - 5km (three miles) from the location of the shooting - "the safest place".

I think the gaffer [Gareth Southgate] is trying to show the players that he will protect them, and I think he is right to do so. That is a big part of his role.

We all have our opinions, it is 'our' England team and we want them to do well, we also want to see them hopefully lift a trophy soon. So the booing of our own players can't be helping.

Everyone has had their opinion on Jordan Henderson in recent months, but I have seen it first hand having shared a dressing room with him, what he brings to the team, particularly off the pitch.

How he pushes players and contributes to driving the team forwards is first class. I just don't see how booing is helpful.

Jordan Henderson says he will play for England as long as he can and has to take criticism "on the chin" after fans booed him in Friday's 1-0 friendly win over Australia at Wembley.

The 33-year-old midfielder, who plays for Saudi club Al-Ettifaq, captained England in the game and was jeered when he was replaced after 62 minutes.

"It's not nice, your own fans [booing]. I love playing for England," he said.

"I have done for many years, that's why I'm still here."

Henderson, who has been capped 79 times, added: "I still want to play for England for as long as I possibly can and give everything for the team, for my country."

After the win over Australia, England manager Gareth Southgate says "it defies logic" that some fans booed Henderson.

"He is a role model in the squad," said Southgate. "I don't understand it."

Southgate added he did not want "to elaborate" on the reasons why supporters were jeering Henderson.

"How is [booing] going to help him or the team?", he asked. "He has got 79 caps for England - what he has delivered is exceptional.

"He has taken Jude Bellingham under his wing. He knitted things together on the field tonight in a team with not a lot of caps."

Southgate says he will not base his team selection on a "popularity contest" and says he continues to back midfielder Henderson...

England come into this game off the back of a 1-0 friendly win over Australia, given to them by Ollie Watkins' goal.

One of the big talking points from that encounter was the booing of midfielder Jordan Henderson by some home fans.

England captain Henderson, 33, was jeered by a section of fans when he was substituted in the 62nd minute.

The ex-Liverpool captain joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq this summer in a move which sparked significant controversy.

Henderson was a vocal ally of the LGBTQ+ community during his time with Liverpool, but has been criticised by some fans and LGBTQ+ campaigners for moving to Saudi Arabia, where same-sex sexual activity is illegal.

Earlier this month Henderson, named England captain for the night with regular skipper Harry Kane an unused substitute, posted a video to his social media accounts where he backed Saudi Arabia's 2034 World Cup bid.

At 34, Giacomo Bonaventura became the oldest player to score his first Italy goal in Saturday's 4-0 win against Malta, but it is not enough for him to retain his place in the first XI.

Kyle Walker is hoping England can get "payback" against European champions Italy in Tuesday's Euro 2024 qualifier.

It will be Italy's first match against England at Wembley since beating them there in the final of Euro 2020.

A point would secure qualification from Group C and a place in next summer's finals for Gareth Southgate's side, while Italy's hopes would remain in the balance.

Recalling the Euro 2020 final, Walker said: "We fell short that night.

"Hopefully we can get a little bit of payback.

"To do what we did in that special summer, to arrive so close. To concede a goal through a set-play when we've been so good it was devastating," Manchester City defender Walker said.

He drew parallels with Manchester City's Champions League triumph against Inter Milan in June, which came two years after they lost the final to Chelsea in Portugal.

Walker said: "At club level, I went to Porto and lost against Chelsea and then two years later we won the Treble. People and teams evolve from that, I think you learn from occasions where you've been in finals and lose in finals, and setbacks and then you go on to achieve something great."
