OK, let's just clear up what happened in THAT final in 2021...

England opened the scoring against Italy at Wembley with a goal from Luke Shaw after two minutes, to set the whole nation into delirium and utter belief that the long wait for a major trophy was coming to an end.

However, Leonardo Bonucci equalised from a corner in the 67th minute, to set up a tense, nervous, agonising end to normal time and then extra time.

In the shootout, Italy missed first... and also missed with a final penalty to win it, but England blew their chances as Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho both fail to score before Bukayo Saka's saved kick gave the Azzurri victory.

Here is our report on the game.

To clear up the current state of play, below is the Group C table, which is looking much tighter than it was prior to the last international break.

The 1-1 draw between Ukraine and England keeps the former just about in the running for automatic qualification. But they need results to go for them.

If England win tonight, they will have Italy in their sights, especially if it is a big home win.

Ukraine host Italy in the final round of group games, on 20 November.

    That would be fun.

There had been discussion about who could play at centre back for England this evening but Gareth Soutgate has gone for the trusted partnership of Harry Maguire and John Stones.

As reported earlier, Kalvin Phillips starts in midfield and it looks as if Jude Bellingham could be in the more advanced role he has been playing at Real Madrid.

Italy's last visit to Wembley to face England was a memorable one for both nations.

It was one that saw the Azzurri dance deliriously around the home of football as the Three Lions sank to their knees in despair.

This was the last European Championship finals, for 2020 but played a year later as a result of the global pandemic. It saw Gareth Southgate's side undone in a penalty shootout on home turf (like you've forgotten!) and Italy claim top spot in the continent for the first time since 1968.

Tonight, though, England have the chance for a double whammy - beat Italy while simultaneously securing qualification and leaving Luciano Spalletti's side to an uncertain fate.

    A point.

Just one teeny, tiny, measly point.

That is all England need to qualify for Euro 2024.

If they get that tonight, their place in next summer's finals in Germany are secure.

But there's something else at stake tonight.... a bit of Wembley revenge.
