    FT: France 4-1 Scotland

We'll leave it there. A sobering night for Scotland in Lille.

As soon as we saw the line-ups, it looked like a mis-match and that's how it played out for large spells.

But we won't let that spoil what's been a fantastic week.

  2. 'A tough lesson'published at 22:55 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    HT: France 4-1 Scotland

    Willie Miller
Former Scotland defender on BBC Sportsound

It was an exercise worth having.

When you get to playing against England and France, in particular, it's no surprise their performances were of a much, much higher level.

It's a case of saying if we can do well in the Euros and we are facing this quality of opposition - this is what we have to expect. Their game has to be lifted. They were well beaten.

This was a tough lesson. We're not there yet against this top quality opposition.

  3. 'We want six points from last two group games'published at 22:49 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    FT: France 4-1 Scotland

A bit more from Steve Clarke on Viaplay...

"We didn't create enough high up the pitch until late in the game," he said. "Jacob Brown came off the bench and was lively and was a threat. Stuart Armstrong had a big chance near the end.

"Those moments in the game can make the scoreline look a little better.

"It's a different kettle-of-fish next month. Two completely different teams. Going to Georgia we should be confident with how we're playing in the group. We want six points from the last two games, I've told the players that.

"They have to go to Georgia knowing they're playing a good team, but not a top team. So, they have to show more on the ball, create more chances and defend well.

"They need to show the lessons we're learned from these tough three matches."

  4. Set play concern for Clarkepublished at 22:46 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    FT: France 4-1 Scotland

"I saw some things I liked, some things I didn't like," Scotland boss Steve Clarke tells Viaplay.

"Top teams are capable of scoring from open play, so you can't concede off set plays. The first one is a free header of a corner, so we will look at that and try to do better.

"The second one is from the second phase of a set play, so we need to look at that one as well.

"And the third one probably kills the game. It's a really soft penalty decision. I don't know why VAR has to get involved, I don't know why the referee can't be stronger and stick with his original decision to let the play go on. Then, it gets difficult."

  5. 'A really proud moment'published at 22:43 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    FT: France 4-1 Scotland

"It's quite surreal to be honest with you, it's something you never expect," says Liam Kelly of his Scotland debut.

The Motherwell goalkeeper was beaten three times in the first half before making way for Zander Clark.

"You just try and play so well for your club to put yourself in a position to be picked for the squad. Then, when you're in the squad you train so hard to try and get a game.

"Zander and I have been in a lot of squads now together, so I'm delighted for him as well. It's a really proud moment for the both of us and we're over the moon to be given that chance.

"A lot of the boys were pleased for Zander and myself and that's great to see. It's about supporting the boys when you're not playing, you need to be ready to go. Everyone wants the country to do well and it's about pulling in the same direction."

On the Kylian Mbappe penalty: "I got a wee touch to it, that's what makes it more frustrating. We do our research, managed to go the right way, normally he goes a wee bit lower, that's why I went that bit lower so aye, disappointed."

    FT: France 4-1 Scotland

We've got a late night Off The Ball to take us through to midnight on Radio Scotland.

On the TV, the highlights will be on BBC One Scotland at 22:40.

  7. November double-headerpublished at 22:34 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    FT: France 4-1 Scotland

So, what are those last two games in Group A?

Scotland go to Georgia next month and end the campaign at home to Norway.

Win them both and we are likely to finish on the same points as leaders Spain, who face Cyprus and Georgia.

That should be enough for pot two status at the Euros.

  8. 'We thought we could have done a bit more'published at 22:31 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    FT: France 4-1 Scotland

Scotland goalscorer Billy Gilmour had time for a quick word with BBC Sportsound.

"We have a good team in there. I know the results don't show it but we'll take the positives into our last two group games," he said.

"Tonight, we thought we could have done a bit more, but that's football.

"Another Euros, we're all delighted and looking forward to the summer. Two games to go, though."

So, what has Steve Clarke learned from this game?

It was a very difficult environment for some of his back-up players to impress.

These guys won't have to face the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele very often.

  10. 'A learning process for the players'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    FT: France 4-1 Scotland

    Willie Miller
Former Scotland defender on BBC Sportsound

Steve Clarke took these two friendlies on with a purpose, to allow these players to understand how big the gulf is between the very, very top and them.

It'll be a learning process for these players.

  11. Postpublished at 22:20 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    FT: France 4-1 Scotland

It's going to take an unlikely sequence of results for Scotland to be a pot one team at the Euros, so we're likely to face at least one top quality side in Germany next summer.

France and England will be the favourites, so we know what kind of tests lie in wait after these friendly defeats.

  12. Postpublished at 22:15 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    FT: France 4-1 Scotland

After those five Group A wins on the bounce, that's three defeats in a row for Scotland - to England, Spain and France.

It's the worst sequence since a run of four losses between June and October 2019 in the early days of Steve Clarke's reign.

    But look at that opposition.

  13. 'No disgrace losing to France'published at 22:09 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    FT: France 4-1 Scotland

    Steven Thompson
Former Scotland striker on BBC Sportsound

It's been a difficult night as expected for Scotland. France are a level above us.

At times they've played at walking pace, when they've wanted to turn it on they do and we've not really been able to deal with it.

Defensively, we haven't been as good as we have been recently, but we're a much-changed side.

There is no disgrace losing to France. What matters to us is going to the Euros. This was a learning experience.

  14. FULL-TIME France 4-1 Scotlandpublished at 22:05 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

It's all over in Lille. A pretty one-sided contest.

Not a huge surprise, given France are packed full of world class talent and chose a very strong side.

Steve Clarke turned to his fringe men and it was a tough, tough shift.

  15. GREAT SAVE!published at 22:04 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    France 4-1 Scotland

Randal Kolo Muani takes aim for the corner of Zander Clark's net but the Hearts goalkeeper does well to keep the shot out with a diving stop.

  16. 60 up for McGinnpublished at 22:02 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    France 4-1 Scotland

John McGinn wins his 60th cap as an 89th-minute replacement for right-back Nathan Patterson.

McGinn is right in amongst it, pushing Benjamin Pavard over long after the ball has gone.

  17. Postpublished at 22:00 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

Castello Lukeba is on for his France debut, taking over from Ibrahima Konate in defence.

Kylian Mbappe jogs off with a big smile, with Randal Kolo Muani on for the last few minutes.

  18. Postpublished at 21:58 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    France 4-1 Scotland

Stuart Armstrong does well to steer a volley on target from a lofted Ryan Christie cross but Mike Maignan is able to save with his legs.

Scotland quickly recycle the ball and an awkward backward header from Jacob Brown forces Maignan into another save.

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21:56 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    France 4-1 Scotland

Greg Taylor is cautioned for a foul just inside the France half.

The Scotland fans are gamely singing away in the background.
