Billy Gilmour banged Scotland in front after just 11 minutes, profiting from a dreadful lapse from Eduardo Camavinga.
The visitors didn't enjoy that lead for long, allowing Benjamin Pavard a free run and header at a corner.
The roaming centre-half added a second header and was very close to making it a hat-trick.
Ousmane Dembele missed a sitter and Kylian Mbappe knocked in a penalty after Liam Cooper's grapple with Olivier Giroud.
