  1. 'The mentality is growing all the time'published at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Everton 1-1 Brighton

    Everton

Everton boss Sean Dyche speaking to Match of the Day: "I'm delighted. Three games in six days, the work ethic is good, we are tactically very good and improving all the time. It is a blow to concede; we kept them quiet.

"Brighton are a good side; they use the ball well and don't lose faith in it. We should have done better on the counter at times; in saying that we had two refereeing decisions on the edge of their box; I don't know what is going on anymore to be honest. They should go for us; on another day, I'd hope we get them.

"The mentality is growing all the time, that hardy edge. I like the way the players are opening their minds to the different ways they can effect a game. Barring a very unfortunate moment, I think we see the game through 1-0.

"The crowd were excellent today; they see a team giving everything. That is the minimum. It is tough to ask more of these players after three games in six days."

  2. 'Sheff Utd celebrations show what it means to win a game'published at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Sheff Utd 2-1 Wolves

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on Final Score

The Sheffield United celebrations show the relief and just what it means to win a game. When you have been on the end of that many defeats and everybody is talking about you.

They showed in the second 45 of today's game the character that they have and when they are playing with high urgency and that high press how effective they can be. They picked up a well-deserved three points in the end.

  3. 'The punishment was too severe'published at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Man City 6-1 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"I don't think the game should've ended the way it did, the punishment was too severe! Almost every time they had a clear chance they scored.

"We made the mistake to start to think we were defending well because we were compact and we can do that for 25-30 minutes. But we lacked some aggression, we were better in the second half. They scored three but it's more the style of the team. We were not threatening them.

"Second half players tried everything. They had the disallowed goal, the crossbar, scored one. The moment you think you are doing well and think you can push more and score another they punish you. They were clinical in key moments and I don't think we deserved 6-1 but whenever you face these kind of teams it can happen."

On Alex Scott injury: "We will have to check, it's the other knee [not the same knee as last injury]. Not the same kind of injury, he felt it in the inside of the knee. Let's hope it's something minor but we can't say too much before checking."

Adam: After today's game, Brighton have conceded 20 goals this season so far. Only three teams have conceded more, and they make up four of the bottom three, while Brighton have kept one clean sheet in all comps since April. Yet Dunk is considered better for England than Ezri Konsa.

  5. 'Makes you think, how good can they be again this season?'published at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Man City 6-1 Bournemouth

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Report

All around the pitch Man City have so much confidence and grace in the way they play.

The best game I've seen Doku play for City so far since he arrived in the summer. So skillful, so confident, so much quality. They have real competition in those wide areas now.

Bernardo Silva too, I'm just running out of words to describe him. So good to watch, so intelligent, a wonderful footballer.

All this is going on while Kevin de Bruyne is sat in the stands, and it makes you wonder, "Gosh, how good can they be again this season?"

  7. 'Plenty to dance about'published at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Brentford 3-2 West Ham

    Chris Latchem
BBC Match of the Day commentator at Gtech Community Stadium

Fans are still dancing in the stands 10 mins after full time at the Gtech and there's so much to dance about. Three wins on the spin, 14 London Derbies without defeat and.... Maupay scored a goal!

Their team showed so much heart today, having led, then trailed and managing to find the resolve to snatch all three points against a good West Ham.

It was a great moment seeing them celebrate Neal Maupay ending his long drought - and to see him watch it back on the big screen after as if checking it was real!

Bryan Mbeumo was such a handful on the right side of attack and on another day could have added a couple more to his season tally.

Thomas Frank deserves credit too. His substitutions Roeslev and Yarmolyuk both charged down a late Fornals chance - forcing him to shoot over. Good energy all round.

  8. 'Now is the time for Eddie Nketiah'published at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    Newcastle v Arsenal (17:30 GMT)

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live at St James' Park

With Gabriel Jesus out injured, Eddie Nketiah will likely play today having scored a hat-trick last time out in the league at home to Sheffield United.

Today's game against Newcastle would be his 100th Premier League appearance. He's got himself into the England squad and the England team, made his debut last month, so you have to consider he will be part of the thinking for upcoming squads.

He has not yet scored a Premier League goal against any of the other teams currently in the top six, yes minutes against them will be a significant factor, but now is the time to take the opportunity to score important goals for Arsenal in matches such as this.

I really can't understand why Havertz starts for Arsenal in the big games. He has offered nothing this season, even in last week's stroll against Sheffield United.

Manchester City defender Nathan Ake speaking to Sky Sports:

"It shows that we want to continue what we've been doing. Last week was a good game but the league goes on and you have to keep going and keep winning.

"We expected them [Bournemouth] to play with four defenders as they have all season but they changed to five. It's about finding the spaces, Jeremy [Doku] was fantastic sometimes you need individual quality to open up the game and he did that he was fantastic."

On Doku: "His personality, he works hard, he's a good guy and he gets on with everyone. He's not shy to show his abilities, he wants to take everyone on even in training. He's so difficult to mark and he's going to be important this season.

"There's always improvement to be made, Pep [Guardiola] is never happy or settled and neither are we we have to keep going and improving."

Newcastle's third team beat Manchester United in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, and the whole club will be buoyed by that result.

In the same competition, I found it really odd that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta waited until his side were 3-0 down to West Ham before bringing on Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard.

Was he really expecting them to turn the game around? Either play them from the start or bring them on when they are 1-0 down.

I am expecting this game to be really close. There won't be many goals, but I just have a sneaking feeling that Arsenal will take the points.

    Sutton's prediction:0-2

Brighton's Pascal Gross: "We were the better team for the whole 90 minutes. We tried to play active football. We came here to play football. They played for a result from the first minute. We approached the game differently. I'm proud of the boys for keep going."

The game had almost a cup tie atmosphere about it.

Everton fans know it is imperative for the team to get away from that bottom three, and had they got the win today they would have been miles off it.

Yes they can still see it in the rear view mirror but that point in the end might still prove very important for them.

Usual stuff from Brighton, looked good on the eye but they would have loved the three points come the end of the game as they controlled the vast majority of it.

  20. 'Game almost perfect for Everton until tiredness kicked in'published at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Everton 1-1 Brighton

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live at Goodison Park

The game went the way Sean Dyche expected, sneaked a goal and almost held out but for the deflected goal.

We know Brighton are lovely on the ball and they would dominate the possession, but they didn't create too much in the way of clear chances.

The tiredness kicked in for Everton, understandably because of the work rate, but when that happens gaps begin to appear. Mitoma made full use of that space to force that equaliser.
