  3. 'The ball went out of play'published at 20:12 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya speaking to Sky Sports about Newcastle's goal: "We are all frustrated. My point of view is I saw the ball going out of play. I think it is a foul on Gabriel, he [Joelinton] pushes him on the back and the decision was it wasn’t a foul. I don’t think it was supposed to go that way. And in my opinion it was offside. We are very, very disappointed.

"We competed very well today away from home. A very tough place to come. The way we played deserved a bit more than a loss. A draw would have been more fair, it was very even. Everyone in the dressing room is very frustrated and obviously angry."

On what Mikel Arteta said to his players after the game: "He only had a little bit to say, he said he was proud on how we competed but he is frustrated with the decision."

  4. 'Looked a good goal to me'published at 20:11 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to Sky Sports:

"Tough game. Massive win, full credit to players for what they gave today it was a battling performance. Both sides good but maybe not in ways we're both known it was a midfield scrap, physical and a lot of duels and thankfully we came out on top.

"Our open play shape defensively was good and has to be against Arsenal. We nullified them and didn't give them clear cut chances. I always felt we were in the game the other way, we had to stay in the game and we did and then got the goal.

"Maybe not the game we expected it to be in terms of style from both teams. Midfield battle was important, we had to try and stay in the game in that way and Joelinton was huge and all three midfielders really helped us. When you don't concede you're always in a game. It wasn't the game we prepared for but you have to show different sides of your game to win and I think we have that in the group at the moment."

On Anthony Gordon: "He's got used to what's expected of him. He had sight of it at the end of last season, he came back fitter from the Euros that was successful for him. That helped his confidence and he's been brilliant for us this season. And he's shown versatility.

"A marker of our mentality at the moment and willingness to win and there was a good feeling in the stadium. The crowd were responding to us and the players understood how important every tackle and duel was. You don't win these games unless you compete. Really proud, we're stretched at the moment but the players have stepped up.

"We have a group of level-headed players. The injury situation is a concern, it's a worry when you're competing on lots of fronts. At the moment we seem to be losing a player a game which is the big negative today. We'll let the dust settle on today's game and see what we've got for Dortmund."

On Kai Havertz tackle: "We were close to the incident, I thought it was high and potentially dangerous. He was lucky to get a yellow. There was a lot of yellow cards and I don't think there needed to be - it wasn't a dirty game but there were a few flash points.

"Keep 11 players on the pitch was the message at half time but not lose fighting spirit and desire. We kept our heads really well in the game."

On VAR decision for goal: "We're in the dark, we're stood by the side of the pitch seeing VAR on the screen but with no pictures. I haven't seen anything other than what I saw at the time. It looked a good goal to me."

  5. 'It's embarrassing, it's a disgrace'published at 20:09 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to Sky Sports: “I praise my players for the performance and the way we played. We didn’t deserve to lose the match. We lose the match because of the clear and obvious decisions. It’s embarrassing. A disgrace. That’s what it is. A disgrace.

"There’s so much at stake, we put so many hours. I am here to represent the football club and get my team competing at the highest level possible. The margins are so small. It’s a disgrace, it’s embarrassing. That’s how I fell and how everyone feels in that [dressing] room. You cannot imagine the amount of messages I got saying this cannot continue. It’s embarrassing.

"I have to be here now to say it is not acceptable.

"I don’t’ know how to feel. I am wasting my time. We are wasting our time. I don’t want to be in the hands of people. It’s difficult enough to compete against this team. It cannot continue. It’s embarrassing. There’s too much at stake. The consequences are too big.

On Martin Odegaard’s injury and his expected return: "We don’t know. That is not a topic for now."

  6. 'We thought one VAR check would cost us goal'published at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The circumstance around it [the match], we're suffering a bit of bad luck at the moment - we're losing players but the response of the players we do have fit and available has has been incredible. Can see from the spirit at the end, the determination to hold on, the collective effort was superb."

On Anthony Gordon's goal: "With every VAR check that was going on we thought one would cost us in the end. Initially I thought it was a good goal but I saw hesitation rom the referee. Obviously pleased goal was given, a good goal from our perspective.

"It was a real battle between normally two teams a lot more fluid than that. Both teams knew we had to fight to win. Wasn't a game of beauty. It was lot of aerial balls, which was a a marker of how hard the game was. Thankfully, we came out on top."

On picking up more injuries: "That's the concern. A negative point from today, it looks like we have lost Dan [Burn]. We knew we were taking a risk with Jacob. But now he will have surgery on his shoulder.

"On winning despite injuries: "It shows we've got very good players still fit and available. We wont feel sorry for ourselves. A big week for us, still two fixtures before the international break."

  7. 'I feel embarrassed to be part of this'published at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC MOTD:

"I have praised my players for the way they played and competed in this stadium against this team. The result should not be what it is - there are many reasons for that.

"If there was a team looking to win the game today it was Arsenal.

"Embarrassing what happened - how this goal stands, in the Premier League - this league we say is the best in the world. I've been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It's a disgrace and there's too much at stake here. We are trying to do incredible things and be at the highest level each week. When we're not good enough I hold my hands up and take responsibility.

"The outcome is nowhere near the level this league needs to have and the way this league is getting competed in. It's not good enough. I feel embarrassed to be part of this."

  8. 'Embarrassed'published at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

Well, it is fair to say Mikel Arteta is not happy with the VAR decision.

"It was embarrassing what happened and how the goal stands," he told BBC Sport.

"I had 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It is an absolute disgrace."

    Full quotes to come.

  9. 'Main focus to be trustworthy for manager'published at 19:54 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goal scorer Anthony Gordon speaking to BBC MOTD:

"Amazing win - against a big team like that at home. The way we won in terms of having so many games really the team is so stretched some of us are maxed out so to dig in there with eight minutes to go was amazing.

"I'm saying I'm maxed out but I do feel good. I'm not complaining, I'm playing in this team against top teams every week so no complaints from me."

On goal: "We've been having some jokes about me playing number nine me and the gaffer. I just hoped I hadn't celebrated too quick, I'm delighted it counted.

"When I play number nine, I am a different build to the other lads and pressing and running behind is big for me and I try to do that as much as possible.

"I used to be obsessed with goals and assists but my main focus now is just being trustworthy for the manager, that's got me in a good place so I won't be changing that.

"Incredible, you can see our togetherness. The side is stretched and we don't have many players, to go to Manchester United and win 3-0 then play like that against Arsenal is incredible."

David: Arsenal just lost their first game of this league campaign and suddenly 'they overachieved last season.' I mean, I was about to say you couldn't make it up, but Luke just did...

Matty:14 shots and 11 corners producing only 1 shot on target. We need a serious rotation option for Jesus. Bring on January.

A proper scrappy game with Havertz and Bruno lucky to be on the pitch. Gutted for Murphy’s shoulder injury. I can definitely see Newcastle getting top 4 again this season.

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goal scorer Anthony Gordon speaking to Sky Sports:

"I don't know how many checks there were [on the goal] but I was just hoping it was alright. It was amazing to score, what a game.

"It shows our togetherness, we're a real team and we show that in every game. We've had some really good results this year - but we've just shown our togetherness.

"It all comes down to the gaffer, how he drills us in training. It doesn't matter who plays we all know our jobs and what we have to do."

    Newcastle defender Jamal Lascelles:

"A huge battle, Arsenal tested us in every way with their technical ability and a few balls they sent into the box towards the end. Anything they threw at us we dealt with and we had some quality up front too.

"We've got great depth, competition in all areas and that's what it's all about - we have a lot more games this year. We're in a good place.

"Whatever test I face I try to do as well as I can and give 110%, I've had an opportunity to play and I just give my all for the badge and that's all I can do.

"We have a quick turnaround now, travel, freshen up and go again."

Here's how it looks at the top of the table as Manchester City go top for now. Crucially, though, Pep Guardiola's side are now three points ahead of Arsenal with both having played the same number of games.

Arsenal overachieved last season. This season will be a more realistic look at where they are, which is in and around top 4. They aren't title contenders

    Luke

To lose a game like that and have your unbeaten run ended by VAR is even harder to swallow.

I've got to say it's been a scrappy game but Newcastle have found a way to grind out the result.

All we are going to talk about tonight, tomorrow, for the next few weeks is that controversial goal.

Arsenal were very poor, Newcastle weren't particularly good either. No risk, no entertainment, no real moments of note aside from the goal, the two teams cancelled each other out.
