Chelsea manager Emma Hayes speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought in the first half we struggled to break them down and create enough clear-cut chances but credit to them in the way they defended. Once we made changes everything went up a step and the last 25-30 minutes is something for us to build on. We deserved the second goal in the end. If Lauren might have scored one of her two big chances it might not have taken as long.

On the impact of the substitutions: "I just felt we started the second half flat and got a little bit stretched from back to front. I thought the energy in the middle was needed. Everybody came off the bench and I thought raised the level. It's what I expect it to look like after three games in but the last 30 minutes is something to build on."

On Fran Kirby's return: "A good start. She's still got to build her fitness and you have to be mindful of that. A good 55 minutes is a good step. 75 minutes for Sam is the maximum amount I wanted to give them tonight."

On if the performance is a step towards the top level: "Managers are always seeking perfection. Is it progress? Yeah it's progress and that's all we want to see.

"I know we will improve. They're a top level group and I'm very happy with how we reacted. This league is a top league and West Ham have certainly improved from last year."

Chelsea, looking for a fifth successive WSL title, hit the front in 2023-24 with a deserved win at Kingsmeadow.

Seven points from three matches and with Kerr and England forward Fran Kirby making vital contributions after injury absences, it has been a very good evening indeed for Emma Hayes' reigning champions.
