We're heading towards the business end of qualification for next summer's European Championships.

England and Scotland lead the home nations' charge, with the latter among a small group of countries who could seal their spot at the finals in Germany during the next round of fixtures.

Scotland top Group A with a 100% record, while England lead the way in Group C. Wales are still in the hunt, but the hopes of Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland hang by a thread.

Two teams qualify from each group, filling 20 of the 24 spaces in next summer's tournament.

Hosts Germany qualify automatically, while the other three spots are decided via play-offs, with 12 participating teams determined by their performance in the 2022-23 Nations League.

They are getting ready for a busy weekend at the Glassboys Sports Bar at Stourbridge Football Club.

The West Midlands non-league side host Gateshead from two leagues higher on Saturday for a place in the FA Cup first round. It has also not escaped local attention that Jude Bellingham is on England duty.

Stourbridge FC is a community hub with hundreds of boys and girls playing for its junior teams. They also have a team in the third tier of women's football - competing against the likes of Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest - together with two disability sides.

Behind the scenes, however, there is concern about the long-term future of Bellingham's hometown club, who play at the 2,600-capacity War Memorial Ground which also serves as the town's cricket club.

The Southern League Premier Division Central club's pitch borders the outfield used by Stourbridge Cricket Club during the summer, an unusual set-up.

Andy Pountney, chairman of Stourbridge, says sharing the land is hindering the football club's attempts to grow and bring in further investment.

  7. Postecoglou 'gave up' on raising game's profile in Australiapublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

England v Australia (Fri, 19:45 BST)

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou says he "gave up" the fight to transform Australian football, speaking of his intense frustrations as he battled to raise the profile of the sport in his home country.

The former Australia men's boss, who has taken Spurs to the top of the Premier League table since taking over in July, is pessimistic about the state of the game in the nation despite its recent hosting of the Women's World Cup, at which the Matildas finished fourth.

Postecoglou, who managed the Socceroos from 2013-17, said the Asian Cup win he masterminded on home soil in 2015 "didn't make an impact back there and that was kind of my frustration".

"When you look at what the Matildas did at the World Cup, unbelievable, but you still won't see an influx of resources to the game. You won't. I guarantee it," he added ahead of Australia's friendly match against England at Wembley on Friday.

"They'll build stadiums and other codes will use them. I just don't think the nation as a whole has that inside them to understand you can make an impact on the world of football but it requires a kind of nationalistic approach that I just don't think Australians -- at their core -- are really interested in."

  8. FA unlikely to light Wembley arch in Israel colourspublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

The UK government has written a letter encouraging governing bodies in sport to "appropriately" mark the attacks in Israel this week with shows of support for the victims.

The Football Association is unlikely to light the Wembley arch in the colours of the Israel flag because of fears of a backlash from some communities and, rather than lighting the arch, BBC Sport understands a message of peace and unity will be conveyed before England face Australia in a friendly on Friday.

A decision on how to mark the attacks is expected to be made on Thursday.

The FA, Premier League and individual clubs have not yet commented about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Here is Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin's letter to the Israel FA in full:

"On behalf of Uefa and the European football community, I am writing to express our profound sorrow upon learning about the tragic acts of violence that occurred last week in Israel, resulting in the loss of innocent lives.

"My heart goes out to all the victims and their families during these difficult times. It is an unimaginable tragedy, and the pain and sorrow are profound and resonate across the entire football community.

"We sincerely hope no one will ever again experience such grief.

"My friend, I pray for these deep wounds to heal and for a world where such senseless acts of violence have no place."

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin has expressed "profound sorrow" about "the tragic acts of violence" in Israel.

Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a series of attacks on the country, killing hundreds and taking up to 150 people hostage.

Ceferin made his remarks on behalf of the European football community in a letter sent to the chairman of the Israel Football Association.

Israel's Euro 2024 qualifier against Kosovo on Sunday has been postponed.

Israeli authorities will not allow the national team to travel abroad, and a new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.

In response to the attacks by Hamas, Israel has launched air strikes on Gaza and prevented the passage of food, water, fuel and medicine into the territory.

Andrew Robertson applauds Scotland fansImage source, Getty Images

A final word from ex-Scotland winger Pat Nevin on tonight's game Euro 2024 qualifier in Spain:

"We find ourselves in a brilliant position where a draw tonight and that will do but we can win against Georgia or win against Norway and it would still get us through.

"We have made a mess of it in the past many, many times and found new, complex ways of failing to get through when we thought we were going to get through.

"But the way this team has played so far has been phenomenal - the workrate has been great and the systems and the tactics, everything has worked perfectly.

"The hope is that it can happen one more time but it's going to be tough - Spain away from home, of course it's going to be tough.

"My heart says we can sneak a draw, my head says we shouldn't be winning this at all - but the way it's gone so far? I'm going to stick my head out and say we'll sneak a draw - 1-1, 0-0, don't care."

  12. 'Up there with best Scotland bosses ever'published at 11:40 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

    Spain v Scotland (19:45 BST)

More from Pat Nevin on the job being done by his former team-mate Steve Clarke as Scotland boss:

"He was right-back at Chelsea and I was right wing - he is one of those people who has got great belief in his own ability but won't shout and bawl about it.

"He's quietly reserved but that doesn't take away anything from the fact that he is an incredibly proud Scotsman and incredibly proud of what he's done in the game so far.

"But if he gets Scotland to these finals, he won't think it but we'll say it - he's up there with the best Scotland managers we've ever had.

"Because very few have ever got us through to a couple of tournaments and that would be amazing considering where we've been for a couple of decades.

"That would be astounding for Clarkey to do that."

  14. McTominay 'special' and 'hard to stop'published at 11:28 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

    Spain v Scotland (19:45 BST)

Ex-Scotland winger Pat Nevin on in-form midfielder Scott McTominay, whose goals have helped his country to the brink of Euro 2024 qualification:

"He started his career as an attacking midfielder and that's the position he sees himself as.

"When he plays for Manchester United, he's kind of one of those dogged midfield players that does the ugly stuff, sometimes a wee bit more defensive.

"And you think 'hey guys, you're training with him every day - can't you see what he's capable of doing?'

"And of course at the weekend he comes on and scores a couple for Manchester United late on.

"It is no surprise to those of us in Scotland who know that if you give him his favoured position, more attacking, he is very, very hard to stop.

"He's been special and if I was Manchester United manager right now, I would be saying to myself, I would get him in the team first because his work-rate is phenomenal."

Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin speaking on BBC 5 Live Breakfast about their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign so far:

"It's been amazing, beyond anything we could have expected at the start of it.

"We'll gloss over very quickly the small matter of a friendly that Scotland managed to lose 3-1 at Hampden Park in between...

"But apart from that, when Scotland have had to do it in the big games, they have done.

"Beating Spain 2-0 at Hampden Park was amazing and actually the game in Norway was one of the most exciting games I've seen in many, many years."

Perhaps not socially acceptable or usual but as an Englishman I’ll be supporting the Scottish wholeheartedly! I like seeing the home nations do well and they have a good team there. They’ll prove formidable and nab a goal, 1-0.

The upper stand of the Anfield Road end at Liverpool will remain closed for the rest of the calendar year as redevelopment work takes place.

The club plan an £80m upgrade to increase capacity by 7,000 to 61,000.

Liverpool changed contractors to Rayner Rowen Group last month after Buckingham Group went into administration.

"On a project of this size, information on all the aspects of the work is critical to move the project forward,” said Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan.

"And what’s become clear in the last few days is there’s just more work to be done in order to get a full project completion plan for the stand, which means unfortunately as I said that the upper tier is not ready to partially or fully open until the end of the calendar year.

“Rayner Rowen really needs the time to complete the information gathering before we commit to any new project timeline.

“There’s a lot of different, various factors that are going into this discussion and into this review, so many pieces of the jigsaw that we need to pull together so it’s just not possible at this point to put a new timeline in place.”
