  1. 'Spain were well beaten and annoyed'published at 08:41 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

    Spain v Scotland (19:45 BST)

Scott McTominay, of course, has previous against Spain.

The Manchester United midfielder scored the goals, early in each half, in Scotland's 2-0 win over Spain at Hampden Park earlier in the campaign.

BBC Scotland commentator Liam McLeod wrote: "This was Spain. World Cup winners. Three-time European champions. They were well beaten on the night. And they were annoyed, perhaps even bitter.

"Manchester City's midfield colossus Rodri bit hardest in his post-match interview when emotions were still running high.

"'The way they play, for me, it's rubbish. Always wasting time, provoking you,' he said.

"It's a comment that has been viewed dimly by Clarke, his coaching staff and the players as they attempt to repeat the trick in Seville on Thursday."

How McTominay turned the game for Man Utd

More from John Carver on the club form of Scotland's Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay - his lack of game time at Old Trafford and two late goals in Saturday's 2-1 win at home to Brentford: "It's great seeing him smile again because he's had a difficult time, but it just shows you the character in Scott because it would've been easy for him to give up, but he's stayed with it at Man United.

"He's stuck in there, he worked extremely hard. He got himself five minutes, 10 minutes and he came on at the weekend because he's got such a good attitude and he goes on there and gets the two goals, which get Man United out of jail. That's the type of professional he is. He's ultra professional."

Carver added: "He has matured, he has developed and long may that continue. He loves playing for Scotland, as all the guys do."

  4. Carver on possible Scotland call-upspublished at 08:20 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

    Spain v Scotland (19:45 BST)

Scotland's assistant manager John Carver on why no replacements have been called up to cover for Kevin Nisbet and Ryan Jack: "Steve [Clarke] picked the squad and we had an idea that Ryan had an issue and we were quite comfortable with what we had.

"There's guys waiting in the wings to come in and I'll touch on Lewis Ferguson in particular because of how well he's done in Italy in Bologna.

"He had a good season last year, you can see him developing physically, mentally. I think he captained the side the other night, which is a magnificent achievement for him.

"There's people there waiting to come in. You've got other lads - Kenny McLean, who's been excellent for us so we've got enough cover in that position to deal with the two games."

Millwall striker Kevin Nisbet has joined Ryan Jack in withdrawing from the Scotland squad before Thursday's Euro 2024 qualifier away to Spain.

The 26-year-old, who has scored twice in 11 games this season, was substituted after 58 minutes of Saturday's 2-2 draw with Hull City.

Midfielder Jack has missed Rangers' past two matches after picking up an injury against former club Aberdeen.

No replacements have been called up by head coach Steve Clarke.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal will miss out for Spain while midfield club-mate Gavi is an injury doubt.

There's no need for hiding behind sofas for this shot at glory, it's far from boom or bust. Scotland will go up against Spain with no fear, little to lose and the world to gain.

There's credit in the bank and time on their side, but Steve Clarke and his team will want their fate sealed as soon as possible before the nerves start to jangle.

This could be another watershed moment for this Scotland team.

Scotland can 'teach Spain a lesson' in Seville

Supporters in Seville are confident that Steve Clarke's men have got what it takes to qualify with a positive result in Spain, if they show "Scottish fight and passion", but concur with Aston Villa's John McGinn that they "need to stay calm"...

Anyone outside of Scotland would laugh at the prospect of managing to blow this one.

Even on our specially-built glorious-failure-ometer, mucking this up would be off the scale.

Steve Clarke's side sit top of Group A, above Thursday's hosts with five wins from five games.

Spain are six points adrift with a game in hand, while Norway are eight points away and need a staggering run of results to usurp the group's form team.

A single point won by Scotland, or a single point dropped by Norway and it's all over for Erling Haaland and co in terms of catching Clarke's men.

If not Thursday, then Sunday could be the fateful day, when Norway host Spain.

And still Scotland have a trip to Georgia and a home game against the Norwegians next month to get the job done.

Here is a reminder of how they stand in Scotland's Euro 2024 qualifying group...

Scotland are in magnificent shape with five wins out of five.

Steve Clarke's side swept Cyprus aside 3-0 on 8 September, as they did in the reverse at Hampden Park in March, to maintain their perfect record.

They could have qualified on 12 September without kicking a ball, but Norway's win over Georgia denied them that luxury.

Scotland know a second successive European Championship appearance can be secured tonight with a draw in Spain, whom they beat at home in March.

They will also qualify if third-placed Norway fail to win in Cyprus. Spain helped themselves massively by hammering Georgia 7-1 on 8 September before smashing Cyprus 6-0 four days later.

Both Australia and England managers are due to hold news conferences later today, when they are sure to be asked about that message of peace and unity planned before their international friendly at Wembley on Friday.

You will be able to find all the latest news from both camps on the BBC Sport website.

For now, though, we will be focussing on Scotland's key Euro 2024 qualifier in Spain tonight, with Steve Clarke's side needing a draw in Seville to seal their place in Germany next year.

  11. FA unlikely to light Wembley arch in Israel colourspublished at 07:32 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

The Football Association is unlikely to light the Wembley arch in the colours of the Israel flag because of fears of a backlash from some communities.

The UK government has written a letter encouraging governing bodies in sport to "appropriately" mark the attacks in Israel this week with shows of support for the victims.

The government has not specifically asked the FA to light the Wembley arch.

Rather than lighting the arch, BBC Sport understands a message of peace and unity will be conveyed before England face Australia in a friendly on Friday.

The FA has been in touch with Football Australia to confirm there will be some form of acknowledgement for the victims before kick-off.
