Back to England and Harry Maguire, who said the "faith" shown in him by England manager Gareth Southgate and his team-mates makes him feel important.

However, the Manchester United centre-back added the criticism he had received "probably affects my family and friends more than it affects myself, especially when I am playing in a game".

Maguire's mother posted a statement in support of her son after his treatment in the Scotland game, when his every touch was ironically cheered after scoring an own-goal.

"The last year has been a little bit difficult for them to enjoy the games as they did in the previous eight or nine years of my career," he said.

"I'm sure that will change. I'll keep working hard and keep fighting for my place and keep trying to put things right."

Former Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare has revealed that he has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently receiving treatment.

Shakespeare was the Foxes' assistant coach for several years, including their Premier League title-winning season in 2015-16 under Claudio Ranieri, and went on to succeed the Italian as Leicester boss.

Leicester City chief executive Susan Whelan said: “Everyone at the club sends their strength and support to Craig, his wife Karen and their children Elle and Jed.

"They will all be in our thoughts and prayers as Craig progresses with his treatment, surrounded by the love befitting his place in the hearts of the Leicester City family and the wider game.”

Sheffield United defender Chris Basham says he is feeling "a lot more comfortable" after twice undergoing surgery on a severe lower-leg injury in Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Fulham.

The 35-year-old centre-back wrote on Instagram, external: "Had my two surgeries done now and I can’t thank the surgeons enough for the fast response to me.

"The first surgery was for cleaning up the wound I suffered and dislocation, the second surgery was to repair the ligaments and to fit a plate on my bone where the fracture was.

"I’m in a cast now and it feels a lot more comfortable.

"Will be in London still for another few days but then be going home to recover in the right way."

Basham added: "Trying to stay positive every day with great family and friends around me. Still overwhelmed by the support I have received. Thank you, Bash."

  4. 'He knows what it's like'published at 10:32 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

England v Australia (Fri, 19:45 BST)

Of course David Beckham, England's third-most capped men's player with 115 international appearances, knows how fickle football popularity can be at times.

And Harry Maguire says the former Three Lions skipper leaned on that knowledge when imparting advice.

Beckham was sent off at the 1998 World Cup after kicking out at Argentina's Diego Simeone. The team went on to lose the last-16 match on penalties and Beckham became a target for abuse from fans who blamed him for England's exit.

"The whole country hated me," he said in his recent Netflix documentary. "Wherever I went, I got abuse every single day. I was a mess."

Maguire added: "He reminded me of the career I've had to date and the big moments I've had in my career. I think when you're going through tough moments you've got to go through past experiences and past memories and where you've gone in your career and what you've been through.

"Every career is so up and down, especially when you reach what I've reached, in terms of being the captain of the biggest club in the world for three and a half years. He's been in that position and knows what it's like."

Harry Maguire says a call from David Beckham "meant everything" after being jeered by Scotland fans.

The England centre-back, 30, scored an own goal as a substitute in last month's 3-1 friendly win in Glasgow, while every touch he took was cheered ironically.

"I actually spoke with David about three weeks ago, after the game," Maguire said. "He got in touch with me so it was really nice of him and I really appreciated that."

The Manchester United defender added: "It meant everything. I've spoken throughout my career about David Beckham being someone I looked up to and watched when I was a young boy.

"It shows how classy he is to reach out to me and to message me. It was something I really appreciate. It was touching really."

Wales boss Robert Page was also full of praise for Charlie Savage and Joe Low after their performances against Gibraltar earned them extended stays with the senior squad.

"We'll keep Sav and Joe and that's not just off the back of that performance tonight. They've done themselves a world of good," said Page.

"With the injuries we've got, Sav's earned the right to be with us and big Joe, I've got a lot of time for him. Keeping them in the squad will benefit us.

"He [Savage] has taken my advice and left [Manchester United for Reading]. It must have been hard for him. I spoke to [Charlie's dad] Robbie, who had to leave United to go to Crewe. It's no different for Charlie.

"He did it because he's playing week in, week out in competitive football. He trains as he plays and has personality.

"We blocked Robbie from speaking to him all week, which was a big achievement. Joking aside, Rob has got his back, he'll look after him. He's got his feet on the ground.

"Sav's best position is an old-fashioned box-to-box eight. The ball for Kieffer was first-class, right on his head. He showed he can do both sides of it and he's a great talent."

Wednesday's friendly victory against Gibraltar was played in Wrexham, where Charlie Savage's father Robbie was born and raised.

"For me to be here with his grandma and his family was amazing," the former Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers midfielder told BBC Radio Wales after watching his son's international debut.

"He deserves it. Tonight was the perfect game for him, utilising his passing and he was magnificent.

"His grandma lives in Wrexham, I was brought up here and it's the first time she's really been out of the house because of Covid and a hip operation. His grandad would have loved to be here.

"The spotlight has been greater on him because he is my son and people have wanted him to fail. He's been brought up in an affluent area and had a good education, but he's humble and he's dedicated.

"He doesn't go out and he doesn't drink, he's a lovely, humble young man dedicated to the sport."

Charlie Savage savoured a "dream" Wales debut that led to boss Robert Page changing his mind and keeping him with the senior squad for Sunday's crucial Euro 2024 qualifier against Croatia.

Savage, 20, impressed in the 4-0 win over Gibraltar with his father, ex-Wales midfielder Robbie, in the stands.

He was scheduled to rejoin the Under-21 squad but will now stay with the senior group, as will defender Joe Low.

"I can't believe it really, a dream come true," said Savage, who provided the cross for one of Kieffer Moore's two headed goals.

Robert Page's men were always expected to win comfortably against a Gibraltar side ranked 198th in the world and having lost their previous 11 away games by an aggregate score of 45-3.

Although Gibraltar represented lowly opposition, this was a fixture of some significance as men's international football returned to Wrexham for the first time since 2019 and only the second time in 15 years.

As Wales play all their competitive fixtures - and most friendly matches - at Cardiff City Stadium, supporters living in the north of the country often have to make long journeys at inconvenient times to attend home games, never mind those abroad.

Staging a match at the Racecourse - the oldest stadium in the world still hosting international football - was therefore a means for Wales' players and staff to show their gratitude to their north Walian fans.

They did so with a flourish, cutting Gibraltar to ribbons with a ruthless first-half performance.

But the true test will come on Sunday when World Cup semi-finalists Croatia visit Cardiff City Stadium, with Wales' hopes of qualifying for Euro 2024 hanging in the balance.

A young and inexperienced Wales side made light work of Gibraltar as they celebrated international football's return to Wrexham with a comprehensive friendly victory.

Resting most of their first-choice players for Sunday's vital Euro 2024 qualifier against Croatia, Wales started with four debutants and breezed into an early lead thanks to headers by captain Ben Davies and Kieffer Moore.

Nathan Broadhead made it three with a smart turn and finish, before Moore powered in a second headed goal to put the home side 4-0 up by half-time.

The goals and entertainment dried up after the break as Wales made a raft of substitutions but, with more meaningful challenges to come, a capacity crowd at the Racecourse appreciated the bigger picture with Croatia on the horizon.

Julen Lopetegui, speaking on the Football Daily podcast, on managing Spain and being dismissed before the 2018 World Cup: "It has been one of the very happy moments for me. We have managed the national team for two years. I feel that we have created a fantastic group. We played 20 matches in these two years, we won 16 matches, we drew four, we didn’t lose. We played against all the best teams around the world. We played in France, we played in Germany, we played against England in the first match with [Gareth] Southgate in Wembley. We played in Italy and we won a lot of matches.

"I think it would have been a really fantastic World Cup, we felt that. It was a big pity to go out, only to decide to say the truth for my future, but it has been like this. It’s part of my life. We were ready to make a fantastic World Cup.

"It was not easy for them [the players], it's not the best situation, I understand. A lot of coaches have two possibilities, to say the truth or keep secrets around the World Cup, I didn’t want that, of course. For me it was honesty, say the truth to the players, the first day, very happy.

"We are professionals, we have a big aim in the World Cup and after we have a clause. It's good to remember they obligated me to sign, in the first time in history, this kind of clause because maybe, in the future they know my intention to go to a club. And it happened. But this is in the past, I prefer to keep the good memories about the team and the players and this part of my life."

Rodri's quotes after Spain's defeat to Scotland earlier in the campaign clearly still rankle with assistant manager John Carver, but he has called on his players to show professionalism in Seville as they seek the point that would seal qualification for Euro 2024.

"I've got to be honest I didn't like it [Rodri's comments], I thought it was disrespectful, but it was their prerogative to say what they wanted to say," said Carver.

But he added: "It agitated me and I'm sure it would have got to some of the players...but it's about being professional and having a clear head going into this game."
