  1. Have a great weekend!published at 15:00 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

    Well, that's us for today.

We've covered plenty, from reaction to Scotland's Euro 2024 qualifier last night to Son Heung-min and Ange Postecoglou's respective Premier League Player and Manager of the Month awards.

We also enjoyed seeing your combined England "Golden Generation" sides and debating which Three Lions players have made the biggest impact, as we looked ahead to the match against Australia at Wembley this evening (19:45 BST kick-off).

Here's a summary of the key stories from the day:

We hope you have a great weekend!

  3. Premier League stats - continuing the goal frenzypublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

A final Premier League stat for you from Opta that shows the feast of goals we have enjoyed so far this campaign.

A total of 240 goals have been scored in the first 80 matches of the current season - exactly three goals a game.

That is the third highest total number of goals scored in the Premier League after eight match days and follows a trend of high-scoring matches in recent seasons.

The record for the highest total number of goals scored at this stage of the season was set in the 2021-22 campaign, when 245 goals were scored in 78 games (3.18 goals per game).

In the 1994-95 campaign, 241 goals were scored, but that was from 87 matches at 2.77 goals per game.

The only other season to have a ratio of more than three goals a game after eight match days came in the 2022-23 season, when 234 goals were scored in 77 matches (3.04 goals per game).

A quirk of those scoring statistics shows that none of the first 46 Premier League games this season ended 0-0 - a joint-league record, level with the 2020-21 season, which ended with Bournemouth and Chelsea's goalless draw at the Vitality Stadium on 17 September.

Results elsewhere on Thursday had a significance for Wales' chances of qualifying for Euro 2024.

Croatia's 1-0 defeat at home to Turkey means Wales realistically need to beat Croatia at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday and then see off Armenia and Turkey next month to book their place at next summer's European Championships in Germany.

Rob Page's side are fourth in Group D, but at least a glimmer of hope remains.

Read more here about why the Wales manager will be hoping Euro 2020 history repeats itself.

  6. 'Club legend? Not for me'published at 14:39 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

    Seamus ColemanImage source, Getty Images

Everton defender Seamus Coleman says he doesn't class himself as a legend at Everton.

The Irish right-back is currently the Premier League's longest-serving player and has been at Everton for 14 years, playing more than 400 games after costing a mere £60,000.

"Club legend? Not for me," Coleman told the Nothing Will Be The Same podcast.

"Because in my opinion, you have to have won something at a football club to be a club legend. I'll be someone that has played three or four hundred games forever but club legend, not in my eyes.

"I can go to bed at night knowing that I give everything for Everton Football Club and that is all I can ask of myself."

  8. 'WSL needs professional referees'published at 14:31 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

Arsenal v Aston Villa (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Carla Ward believes there are more important priorities for the Women's Super League than introducing Video Assistant Refereeing.

There have been a number of contentious decisions this season - with Villa's Kirsty Hanson being sent off in the opening game and Manchester City's Alex Greenwood receiving a second yellow card after taking 26 seconds to take a free-kick against Chelsea last weekend.

“I think we can’t run before we can walk," she said. "We need to professionalise the referees in our game first. I think it’s really important. We’d be asking those officials to work on VAR.

"From what I hear, VAR is a hugely complicated technology so I think it’s really important that we have professional people working on that.

"You can’t expect part-time officials to utilise VAR. There’s areas in the game that certainly needs improving and a lot of focus before we even think about VAR.”

  9. Eidevall issues update on Mead, Miedema and Williamsonpublished at 14:27 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

Arsenal v Aston Villa (Sun, 14:00 BST)

Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall has confirmed that Beth Mead is "100% available" for Arsenal's Women's Super League match against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The England forward returned to full training earlier this week.

He also confirmed that Vivianne Miedema, who has also been out with an ACL injury, has returned to team training while adding that there is "no way" Leah Williamson will be available for the Gunners before Christmas.

  10. 'Media trying to create a rift' - Antonio on Ramsdale and Rayapublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

Aaron Ramsdale and David RayaImage source, Getty Images

West Ham forward Michail Antonio thinks the media have cast a negative spotlight on the competition between Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya and that "they are trying to make a rift between the players".

He told the Footballer's Football Podcast: "It doesn’t help. Basically they are trying to make a rift between the players.

"At the end of the day, they are all one. They are one squad, one team, so they want the team to do well. If he makes a good save, you’re buzzing. If another striker scores, I’m going to be jumping out like well done because they are helping the team achieve something.

"This one has been so big because of how well Arsenal did last year and Ramsdale was their number one. The fact they brought in Raya this year and just threw him in for Premier League games, the media has kind of made it more than it actually is. The manager makes the decision and he has chosen to put Raya in. It’s just what it is."

Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2025.

The 31-year-old defender's previous contract had been due to run out in the summer of 2024.

"It means everything to me to play for this club and to sign a new contract," said Burn, who joined Newcastle from Brighton in January 2021 in a £13m deal.

"I said when I signed that I didn't want this to be just a 'stop-gap' signing to keep us up - I wanted to be here for a long time.

"So personally it feels even more of an achievement signing this one than it was actually signing here in the first place. I'm delighted and looking forward to the next couple of seasons."

Burn has made 70 appearances for the Magpies and has been ever-present in the Premier League so far this season.

  15. 'No grudges over the number nine shirt'published at 14:01 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

When Alan Shearer was signed by Newcastle United in 1996, it was surely fate he would take the legendary number nine shirt.

The only problem? There was already a formidable centre-forward wearing it, and doing a very good job.

Les Ferdinand tells the latest episode of Kammy & Ben's Proper Football Podcast how boss Kevin Keegan went about breaking the news to him.

"I never asked for number nine - it was just the shirt I was given to wear," he said.

"We were on a pre-season tour of the Far East and I was running to duty free when Kevin pulled me down and said I was the first to know we were signing Shearer.

"Then he asked about the number nine and said Alan had worn it all his career. I was like: 'So have I.' He then said Alan wanted penalties so he had to ask Peter Beardsley about that and I replied: 'I thought I was the first to know.'

"I got that I had never been the kid on the Gallowgate End watching the number nine score for Newcastle and knew what it meant to him. I had no grudges against him - but my relationship with Kevin was never the same after that.

"The rest of the boys could not believe I had given it up and were asking if I had sold it!"

  16. Criticism was due to my colour - Ferdinandpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

    Les FerdinandImage source, Getty Images

Former Queen's Park Rangers and England striker Les Ferdinand says the criticism he faced as QPR's director of football was because of his colour.

He also said some people in men's football keep getting opportunities he and his peers in the black community have not received.

Ferdinand spoke about his experience on the latest episode of Kammy and Ben's Proper Football Podcast.

"Some of the criticism that came was because of my colour," he said.

"I always say to people, 'If I was a bad director of football, it wasn't because of my colour. It was just, I was a bad director of football. If I was a good one, it wasn't going to be because of my colour. It was because of my abilities.'"

  18. Rabbi Goldberg resigns as chair of FA's Faith in Football grouppublished at 13:46 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

Rabbi Alex Goldberg has resigned from his role as chair of the FA's Faith in Football group and expressed his "profound disappointment in the FA's decision not to have a specific tribute during the upcoming matches against Australia and Italy at Wembley Stadium" to Israeli victims of the Hamas attack last weekend.

In a letter to FA chief executive Mark Bullingham he said the "decision to not light up the arch has been received badly tonight within the community".

He added: "I strongly urge a reassessment of the FA's stance on this matter.

"Please consider aligning more closely with the global solidarity movement, and recognise the need for a nuanced, empathetic response that acknowledges the complexities of this conflict and unequivocally condemns the indefensible acts of violence and terror against civilians."

In response the FA said it was "sorry" to hear of his resignation, adding: "Although this is an informal group that is not part of the FA's governance structure, we are grateful for the support he has provided over the years."

The FA said: "It is also important to clarify that our decision not to allow Israeli or Palestine flags into Wembley Stadium was made at the direct request of senior members of the Jewish community."

The chair of the FA’s Inclusion Advisory Board Deji Davies has defended its stance on tonight’s tribute to victims of the violence in Israel and Gaza.

  20. Sheff Wed appoint former Germany coach Rohlpublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

Sheffield Wednesday have appointed former Germany assistant coach Danny Rohl as their new manager.

The 34-year-old replaces Xisco Munoz after the Spaniard was sacked last week having led the club to their worst ever start to a season.

Munoz failed to win any of his 10 Championship games in charge and the Owls are seven points adrift of safety.

Rohl, who has become the Owls' 11th permanent manager in the last 12 years, previously worked as assistant to Ralph Hasenhuttl at RB Leipzig and Southampton, and under Hansi Flick at Bayern and with the German national team.
