  1. Positive stats for Everton improvementpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

Everton rank second in the Premier League for shots this season.

Sean Dyche's side are 16th in the table but only league-leaders Tottenham have had more shots on goal.

The Toffees aren't just firing from range either, as their crossing statistics also point to them being a side on the front foot. In all - and including corners - they have delivered 177 crosses this season. Only Luton have more on 196.

Given their league position in relation to their efforts on goal, it signifies Dyche's side are a little wayward with their shooting. They have hit the target with 43.56% of efforts - only six teams are worse off in that metric.

If Beto can find the target more it will help, with the towering front man hitting the target just once from 13 shots.

  2. Premier League stats - basement battlepublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

It might be tight at the top, but teams at the bottom are already battling to ensure they do not get cut adrift.

Burnley, Everton, Luton and Sheffield United all lost their opening three Premier League games this season. According to Opta, it is the first time in English top-flight history that as many as four different clubs have done so.

Everton have managed to make up for their poor start with two wins, while Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United have only two wins between them after eight games since promotion.

  3. Premier League stats - closest title race ever?published at 13:20 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

Tottenham supporters may well be chuckling in nervous excitement at that Ange Postecoglou Manager of the Month stat.

For those of you who are counting down the days until the end of the international break, we have a few more stats where that came from, supplied by Opta, on the Premier League season so far.

    Here is the first:

There have already been five teams finish a day top of the Premier League table this season (Newcastle, Manchester City, Brighton, West Ham and Tottenham) – two more than in the whole of 2022-23 (Arsenal, Tottenham and Man City).

Amazingly, two of the early season favourites - Arsenal and Liverpool - have not yet made it to the top spot.

It begs the question, could this be the closest Premier League title race ever?

    Vote with the thumbs...

Proud of Big Ange, Sonny and the team. We aren't going to win the league - it's just refreshing to be watching good football again and everyone fighting for the badge.

  5. Can Postecoglou follow Klopp's lead?published at 13:08 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

We mentioned earlier that Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has won the first two Premier League Manager of the Month awards of the season.

It is the first time a manager has done that since Jurgen Klopp in 2019.

Liverpool went on to win the Premier League title that season - could league leaders Tottenham do the same?

Thumbs up if you believe they can, thumbs down if you don't.

If Southgate would pick players in form and play players in their club positions, we might at last realise what incredible talent we have. Otherwise we come up short yet again. Could be another boring friendly tonight.

There is, of course, the argument that the current crop of England players have reached the semi-final of a World Cup and the final of the European Championships - something the original "Golden Generation" failed to do.

Possibly one or two from current team would make it, Kane & Bellingham. GK choice is not great from any of the options. G Neville best ENG RB for a generation & how do you drop Beckham, Scholes, Gerrard, A Cole, Rooney? Sorry but the current crop have a way to go yet.

    Paul Lambert
Former Scotland midfielder speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live

Personally, I can't stand VAR. I think it is nonsense and is too confusing.

Human error is part of the game.

VAR I think is a waste of time. It's stop start. Scott McTominay has probably not scored a better free-kick in his life and then they've called it off for that. I am not a fan of it.

I think it is a brilliant goal and I think he goalkeeper was never going to get it.

It's a difficult one to call and as Steve [Clarke] said, that's the call the referee made and you've got to go with it.

Scotland have been brilliant over the campaign. They will get there.

    Spain 2-0 Scotland

    Paul Lambert
Former Scotland midfielder speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live

They have came a long way under Steve [Clarke]. I think we went through a time when they were giving out caps like they are sweets. I think Steve has pulled it together and they have deserved [where they are]. They've got a really good club spirit.

They are playing at a really high level. They guys deserve so much credit. We were so close to getting it [qualification]. I think we'll get it this weekend. I don't think Spain will get turned over by Norway. Anything can happen but I don't think they will, and Scotland will deservedly qualify.

    Group A tableImage source, .

Scotland remain top of Group A, three points above Spain.

The top two will qualify, so if Spain can beat Norway in Oslo on Sunday then Scotland will be heading to the European Championships in Germany next summer.

Or, if needed, they can get the job done next month when they travel to Georgia (16 November) for their penultimate game.

Finally, if results do not go Scotland's way, it could all come down to their final group game at home to Norway (19 November).

In case you missed it earlier on, Scotland's bid to reach Euro 2024 was agonisingly prolonged by their first defeat of the qualifying campaign on a frustrating night in Spain on Thursday.

Needing a point to reach consecutive European Championships, a combination of steely focus, last-ditch blocks and some Spanish profligacy meant the home side were scoreless before Alvaro Morata's ghosting run and header deep into the second half.

Minutes earlier Scott McTominay had triggered revelry among the Scots as he lashed a wonderful free-kick past Unai Simon, only for the goal to be ruled out after a VAR review.

Scotland's anguish was compounded in the closing moments as Spain grabbed a second via a Ryan Porteous own goal.

Scott Mullen's full report details what ended up being a frustrating night for Steve Clarke's side.

I think man for man you'd mainly pick 2004 players, however getting them into a cohesive XI was a problem. The current crop has players that correctly fit into every position and depth in most places.

  16. Joe Cole left a mark in my first major tournamentpublished at 12:14 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

Which 'Golden Generation' player had the biggest impact?

    Joe Nelson

In 2006, England went to Germany for the World Cup and a nine-year-old me was fixated on what was the first major tournament I had properly watched the Three Lions in.

I desperately swapped Panini stickers throughout the weeks leading up to it in an attempt to complete my book - my dad, a massive football fan, of course taught me why a 'spares' pile was so important for trading at school!

I watched the 1-0 group-stage win over Paraguay with excitement and celebrated when Peter Crouch leapt above Brent Sancho to give the Three Lions the lead in the 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago.

One goal, however, would forever been ingrained in my mind. England faced Sweden in the final group-stage match and when Joe Cole chested up the ball and volleyed superbly into the back of the net from more than 30 yards out, it forever changed my perception of the former West Ham and Chelsea midfielder.

He may not have gone on to achieve the same as his 2006 World Cup colleagues but Cole's goal is something I will always consider as one of my brightest memories of watching England.

Nothing compares to Rooney in 2004. Looked like he would rival Pele and Maradona, which is why a still very impressive career is tinged with disappointment.

Following Son Heung-min's Player of the Month triumph, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has been crowned Premier League Manager of the Month for September.

Postecoglou, who also claimed the award in August, becoming the first Australian to ever win the accolade, now makes more history as the first manager to win the award in each of his first two months in the competition.

Victories over Burnley, Sheffield United and Liverpool were added to by a draw against Arsenal to maintain Spurs' unbeaten start to the season.

Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min sent the Premier League a video message after he was crowned September's Player of the Month. Here's what he said:

"I am currently away with the Korean national team but I have just found out I am the Premier League Player of the Month.

"I just want to say thank you to everyone that voted for me and we want to keep up our good form and I can't wait to see you all in our next game against Fulham.
