As mentioned, Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway cruised past Cyprus to keep their Euro 2024 qualification hopes alive and force Scotland to wait to seal their place at next summer's tournament.

The Manchester City striker hit two goals in seven second-half minutes to take his tally in qualifying to six.

Alexander Sorloth and Fredrik Aursnes were also on target in Larnaca.

Norway face Spain in Oslo on Sunday and a failure to win would ensure Scotland's qualification.

  2. 'You could see what Scotland were trying to do'published at 07:55 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

    Spain 2-0 Scotland

Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin remains upbeat about his country's chances of qualifying for a second consecutive European Championships, despite Thursday night's result in Spain, which followed a friendly defeat to England at Hampden.

"Scotland will feel fed up tonight, that's two losses in a row but it's Spain and England," Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"You could see what Scotland were trying to do. It was a grown-up plan which didn't quite come off."

Scotland will still qualify if Spain win in Norway on Sunday, or if they can win one of their final two qualifiers - in Georgia on 16 November or at home to Norway on 19 November.

Nevin added: "Steve Clarke can say to the players: 'If we beat Georgia, we're through.' You'd have taken that at the start of the campaign."

Scotland need to live with Spain 'disappointment'

Scotland manager Steve Clarke on the defeat to Spain: "The team was good. I feel sorry for them that they have lost the game...even more sorry they have lost the game 2-0. It's decided on fine margins."

He added: "We knew coming here that we wanted to be competitive. We wanted to show that we are a good team and I think we did that...overall pleased with the team, but obviously disappointed to lose the game."

  5. 'Referee changed his mind' - Scots rue VAR chaospublished at 07:37 British Summer Time 13 October 2023

The complexion of Scotland's Euro 2024 qualifier in Spain changed when Scott McTominay lashed a second-half free-kick into the top corner - only for it to not count.

Was Jack Hendry offside? Did he interfere with play? Did he foul the Spain goalkeeper?

"McTominay's fine free-kick is so close to being a super goal," said Scotland manager Steve Clarke.

"Initially, Jack is a centimetre offside. Then when he steps towards the keeper they've asked the referee to look at it. They've interpreted Jack as interfering with the keeper. I'm not sure the goalie is saving that shot anyway."

Scotland midfielder John McGinn claimed the referee changed his mind, adding: "Every Scottish person would be frustrated watching that. The goal, you think you've got a goal to qualify. Unbelievable strike from Scotty. No keeper in the world is saving that.

"The referee decides it's a foul. During the game he changes his mind to say it's an offside. Not sure how clear that is. That's the thing that stings really. We get the big moment, we score. Jack's right leg is offside, but it's very, very harsh."

Scotland did everything that was asked of them in Spain, although that will be little consolation as the attention now turns to Norway hosting Thursday's winners in Seville.

It was a bruising night. Firstly losing Robertson after being clattered by Simon, then the nature of Scotland's goal being disallowed.

Furious debate raged after the game, but regardless of the rights or wrongs, it triggered a brutal ending.

It came at a point when you just thought Scotland had weathered the worst of the Spain storm, only for Morata to show nous and spark which had gone unrewarded up to the point he nodded Spain in front.

Scotland have two games left to get over the line. Let's hope they don't need them.

Scotland captain Andrew Robertson suffered a serious-looking shoulder injury during the Euro 2024 qualifying defeat by Spain.

The Liverpool left-back, 29, had to leave the pitch before the break in Seville with his arm cradled in his shirt after a challenge with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon.

The defender looked in discomfort as he left the pitch.

"We'll have a look and he'll go back to his club now," said Scotland head coach Steve Clarke.

"We'll see how it is and how it settles down. Hopefully he's good for his club as soon as possible and ready to help us in November."

Scotland remain top of Group A, three points above Spain.

The top two will qualify, so if Spain can beat Norway in Oslo on Sunday then Scotland will be heading to the European Championships in Germany next summer.

Or, if needed, they can get the job done next month when they travel to Georgia (16 November) for their penultimate game.

Finally, if results do not go Scotland's way, it could all come down to their final group game at home to Norway (19 November).

Scotland's bid to reach Euro 2024 was agonisingly prolonged by their first defeat of the qualifying campaign on a frustrating night in Spain.

Needing a point to reach consecutive European Championships, a combination of steely focus, last-ditch blocks and some Spanish profligacy meant the home side were scoreless before Alvaro Morata's ghosting run and header deep into the second half.

Minutes earlier Scott McTominay had triggered revelry among the Scots as he lashed a wonderful free-kick past Unai Simon, only for the goal to be ruled out after a VAR review.

Scotland's anguish was compounded in the closing moments as Spain grabbed a second via a Ryan Porteous own goal.

A point in Spain would have been enough for Scotland to secure qualification for next year's European Championships in Germany.

But the wait goes on after a 2-0 defeat in Seville was coupled with a 4-0 win for Group A rivals Norway in Cyprus, which ensured Steve Clarke's side must go again.

All eyes now turn to Spain and Sunday's key qualifier against Norway in Oslo.

We will bring you all the reaction from Seville and consider what happens next for Scotland, as well as build-up to England's friendly against Australia at Wembley.
