  1. We'll leave it therepublished at 22:22 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

FT: Gibraltar 0-4 Republic of Ireland

Thanks for joining us on a night when the Republic of Ireland got their second Euro 2024 qualifying win with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Gibraltar in Faro.

They have one more qualifier left to play, away to Netherlands, then there is a friendly against New Zealand which some believe could be under-pressure manager Stephen Kenny's last game in charge.

There is still, of course, that complicated scenario whereby Ireland sneak a Euro play-off place but there's no way we are starting to get into that one at this time of night.

    Thanks and goodnight.

  2. 'The players were professional' - Kennypublished at 22:10 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

FT: Gibraltar 0-4 republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny speaking on RTE:

"I think with the disappointment from the other night [the win] was important. The players were very professional and worked the goals well and played some good football. It was a good win and in terms of scoring four we could have scored a lot more. These games can be difficult if you don't get the goals that we need but in the end it was very comfortable."

On Mikey Johnston's performance: "I love wingers. That's his first start and he needs to play more matches. He is too good not to be playing football, so it's great that he did well for himself and with Chiedozie too it look like we have wingers that can make an impact."

On qualifying: "At the moment I'm not sure of the exact permutations, it obviously depends on other results. It's still more unlikely than likely and I think regardless we have to go to Amsterdam and try and get a win if we can. I think from my point of view, the games against France and Holland at home they have been really good games and we were narrowly beaten in both. We have got to get organised, go there and put in a performance that gives ourselves a chance at getting a result."

  3. 'A lot of positives'published at 22:01 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

FT: Gibraltar 0-4 Republic of Ireland

    Shay Given
Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper on RTE Sport

There are a lot of positives but it was against Gibraltar. They were very poor tonight, they are a poor opposition, so it's difficult to judge Ireland. The age of the team is young and those young players are getting a lot of caps and the experience of playing international football and the pressure that comes along with that as well. They probably think themselves that they done what they did tonight for the manager because he's under a lot of pressure because the results haven't been good enough.

  4. 'Sometimes players have to take responsibility as well'published at 21:59 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

FT: Gibraltar 0-4 Republic of Ireland

Republic forward Callum Robinson on RTE:

I'm really happy. First of all to get the result because they haven't gone our way. Personally I'm really happy to be back in the squad after a frustrating seven or eight months with injuries. There was a long wait for the VAR for my goal but I was delighted it was given. We knew an early goal would help and Evan has got so much potential. He will want to keep learning but he is in a good place at the minute.

He [manager Stephen Kenny] has been great with me and with the boys. Some results haven't been good enough, but sometimes the players have to take responsibility as well. He put me back in the squad when I haven't played much club football but he trusts me and obviously I have repaid him by getting a goal tonight.

  5. We want to get behind the manager - Johnstonpublished at 21:50 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

FT: Gibraltar 0-4 Republic of Ireland

    Republic man-of-the-match Mikey Johnston:

It's good. The fans deserved it. Friday was a tough result to take and we felt like we had to give them something back. I was buzzing to get going tonight, I needed to get on the scoresheet and I'm delighted I did. [We were] definitely [doing it for the manager] tonight. He cares so much, he puts everything into this and we definitely want to get behind him. Results have not gone our way all the time but we are trying to play the right way. It is not coming off at the moment but hopefully we can turn it around.

  6. 'Better times ahead'published at 21:41 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

FT: Gibraltar 0-4 Republic of Ireland

    Ray Houghton
Former Republic of Ireland midfielder on RTE

It's lovely to see the fans, that have come to support their team tonight, actually going home with a smile on their face. They have enjoyed the performance and the victory as have the players and the manager. Hopefully there will be better times ahead and that's the standard you have to play with, the authority and playing the ball forward and scoring gaols.

Liam Walker takes it - he takes all their free-kicks - and floats it to the back post but it comes to nothing.

This could have easily been seven or eight.

It's been professional from Ireland, they came to do a job and they have gone about it in the right way. They've looked threatening and put the ball into good areas.

    Callum Robinson 80 mins

Actually, hold that thought. It's being checked by VAR for an offside.

    And it's given!

It looked as if Callum Robinson may just gone too early with his run as the cross was delivered but his header stands after being checked for offside.

That's nine international goals for Robinson.

Mikey Johnston still looks fresh, he'll be happy enough with his performance this evening, he's been absolutely terrific. He gets you on the edge of your seat, he's an exciting player, he can handle the ball in tight areas and he's not afraid to take a player on.
