  2. 'We're connected with our supporters'published at 23:12 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Manchester City

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, speaking to Match of the Day, says: "We are preparing the match trying to get this good performance collectively. We did good work defensively with a high press and we were trying to be aggressive.

"We did a fantastic match, a fantastic game, but there is still work to do for Saturday [at home to Arsenal]. Of course the goalkeeper saved us in one or two actions, we were getting more comfortable and we're connected with our supporters, they pushed us.

"When you are playing Manchester City you have to get your moments and try to control the game. We created chances but it was a very tough match.

"Leon Bailey is a very good player and sometimes what a player. Our challenge with him and his challenge is to be consistent. Today he played an amazing match and I will try to get him to do the same on Saturday. He is trying to help the team and with his skills and quality, he is very important for us. Tonight he was fantastic and we can enjoy it with him.

"We're going to focus on the Arsenal game at home, we're feeling strong with our supporters but it is the leaders coming here. We have to smile, but it's so quick before we're thinking about Saturday."

Former Manchester City defender Gael Clichy on Amazon Prime: "Sometimes it's just about the game. And the game today was all about Aston Villa. They played fantastically well and Manchester City were second-best.

"Usually when I watch City I see a game plan and identity. Tonight I didn't see the solution, the movement or any runs in behind.

"That's what we saw with Villa. When you watch the game, one team had a clear plan, and the other that is usually so impressive was off.

    "It was very surprising.

"Big credit to Villa, from the first to the last minute...congratulations. It could have been more than 1-0."

I love this time of year...hot chocolate when it's frosty outside...upbeat sleigh- bell-filled songs on the radio...kids on their best behaviour just in case... City go through a bad patch and everyone claims Pep may have lost his touch and 'we may have a proper title race this season' ...then they go on a 15-20 game winning streak and all is back to normal come May....

So Man Utd beat an inconsistent, mid-table Chelsea team and suddenly ETH and the team are ‘on the right path’??

  7. 'We can't force the fans to stay behind the team'published at 23:03 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-2 Bournemouth

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I thought we lost to a better team on the night. I was disappointed, of course.

"I think the score line is a bit harsh. The second goal is one of those that is a nail in the coffin but we'd lost the game by that stage and these games are the really awkward ones for any team.

"We're not playing as well as we'd like at the moment. Our home form has not been good.

"We're playing against a team whose form is very good but, unfortunately, everyone thinks that that team is nowhere near as good as we are - and that's a false observation because they are as good as we are. Tonight I thought they were better than we are.

"I can't fault the players for effort. I thought we tried very hard, especially second half. We didn't concede many goal chances until they got the late one.

"All our efforts, all our work, all our toughing it out to keep us in the game didn't create enough goal chances and, as a result, the fans are unhappy because they came here expecting us to blow this tiny Bournemouth team away.

"But this tiny Bournemouth team turned out to be a very good one."

On fans' frustrations: "This is par for the course in football. People come with expectations to see their team win and when you don't, when you don't play as well as we would have liked then they express their frustrations.

"I think the players' efforts in the second half were worthy of some sort of support really. But the frustration is, [the fans] came tonight thinking this was going to be an easy win for Crystal Palace and it turned out to be a home defeat.

On lack of goals: "We're worried, of course we are. But to score goals you need two things: to get your confidence back and then produce the combinations, the movements and the quality in front of goal.

"We did create one or two chances in the game that on another day might have helped us. But I agree, at the moment we are not doing enough in that respect. When one or two players return that might help us as well."

On turning form around: "I don't play. All you can do is prepare your team and send them out there, hope they understand what they need to do and have the confidence to try things and bring them off.

"When that's not happening, experience tells you that you have to stay behind them. We can't force the fans to stay behind them in those moments. We can't get them to do what they are so famed for doing if they chose not to do that.

"The players themselves have got to stay together and accept this is a bad moment in our season. It is a moment, this is the 15th game of 38. The only ones that can stop it happening are the players in that dressing room."

On Liverpool game: "One hopes that one's supporters will support. It might be a lame hope but one hopes that when times are hard, people get behind and rally round to give us even more support than they would be doing if we were playing better.

"It's a new game. Just because Liverpool are more highly than Bournemouth doesn't mean we can't do a good job against them. I will certainly defend the team against any criticism about effort."

  8. 'We couldn't match the energy'published at 23:01 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to Match of the Day: "We didn't start the match well and maybe that can be expected because of the last couple of days. We couldn't match the energy of Manchester United but they had an extra day to recover. We missed energy and the possibility to change the game. That was a problem and it happens sometimes. That is football. Full credit to Manchester United. They deserved the victory and were better than us but we were close. We need to be focussing on the next game."

Missed chances: "We need to be more clinical in the places like Old Trafford. We conceded the second goal and it was more difficult. We need to make better decisions. I think they pushed us to play in our half in the first half but then I think we were better and played a little bit better. It's hard with all of the emotion out there."

David: This is the first season in a while the top is more exciting than the bottom. I think we are all confident on who is going down.

Steve Cooper will be the next to get sacked. Considering the amount spent and the players brought it, they have been very disappointing.

  10. 'This team will be good'published at 22:58 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-1 Chelsea

    Manchester United

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to Match of the Day: "I can always have complaints but we are pleased with the result and the performance. We deserved this. We wanted to send this message to crowd but this is also our style. In the first 30 minutes we did it perfectly on the pitch."

Style of play: "It was unnecessary to concede that goal. We switched off. We have steps to make. We are going in the right direction. This team will be good and this project will be good."

Dressing room unrest: "I don't care about the noise. They are used to it. It was the same at Ajax but in a smaller country so less people."

Scott McTominay: "He did great. he had an important role to play. He is a very good player. He stopped Chelsea with Antony. In possession he was very dynamic. He scored two and could have had more."

Mentality: "When you are not on top form on the day, you get beaten. You need to be at your best. When you are not, you get killed. We know that and we need the right attitude every game."

  11. 'It is my job to find a solution'published at 22:56 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Manchester City

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to Match of the Day and in the post-match news conference, says: "Aston Villa played better. The first half we didn't move in possession and the second half was much, much better and we had chances, but we struggled to find the pass and movements in the right moments.

"After the deflection, we have scored four or five goals with deflections so it is what it is and we have to accept Aston Villa was better and go to Luton.

"Rodri is an important player of course but when he is not there we have to find a way to win without him. Six points [off the top] and we would prefer to be top of the league but we made three draws and lose today.

"In these years we have found a way to win games but we struggled a bit and we have to find a way. It is my job to find a solution. The dynamic changes by winning games. When a team is better you have to recognise it."

Former Manchester City defender Gael Clichy on Amazon Prime: "City played one of the worst games we've seen from them.

"When you see two centre-backs playing number six, you could see with the ball, in possession, there was no fluidity. Usually that's what we like to see from City. We did not see any of this tonight.

"Tonight they're lucky not to concede two, maybe three or four."

  14. 'They showed massive energy'published at 22:50 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to Amazon Prime: "The other team deserved the victory. It was difficult at the start. They showed massive energy. We played Sunday with one less day to prepare. Maybe it was difficult for us to start the game in the way we wanted. We created enough chances to be in the game. We started the second half really well but then we concede and it is difficult."

What happens next: "We need to recover all of the players and increase our level. It's a time that is really competitive and we need players to help and provide a solution to increase our level."

Cole Palmer: "We cannot put it all on his shoulders because he is really young. He came on the last day of the market to help us. It was a good goal."

How Chelsea played: "This type of game is difficult to asses because Manchester got one more day to recover. We need to recover players and be more competitive. We had a good victory against Brighton but now we lost."

  16. 'If we keep winning, of course we have to believe'published at 22:47 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Manchester City

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery on Amazon Prime: "Good evening. It's very good but we have to believe that we are now in the top four more or less, but even now we are not content, battling with other teams. If we can keep taking this process and winning of course we have to believe.

"We have to be excited but we need to keep the balance. For now we have to be focused on Arsenal on Saturday. I want us to be a team with a winning mentality and be balanced.

"We are aware of where we are in the table. But behind us is Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham and it is going to be very difficult. But of course we are focusing each match, and trying to be competitive. The last match against Bournemouth we nearly lost. We have to be consistence.

"Of course at home we are very good. The supporters, the 12th player, are behind us."

On goalscorer Leon Bailey: "He's an amazing player and the way he played tonight, he was fantastic tonight. He's an amazing player. He has to be consistent. If he plays like that all the time he's amazing. He's been more committed. Now he's increased.

"We are trying to be aggressive here at home, trying to get more possession than normal against Manchester City. The key was to respect them but also to be ambitious as well when we face them."

  17. 'We wanted to react'published at 22:45 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-1 Chelsea

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, speaking to Amazon Prime: "After the last game at Newcastle, it was not good. We wanted to react today to show the fans our energy and that we wanted to win."

Scott McTominay: "He played a very good game. He scored two goals. He didn't want to score a hat-trick, just two! We won 2-1 and that is the most important."

Reaction: "We started very well. I think the whole game was good. We played very well and had a lot of confidence. We had a very good reaction."

  18. 'They are definitely top four contenders'published at 22:43 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Man City

    Paul Robinson
Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Villa are definitely top four contenders now.

You look at the way they are playing at home especially, scoring goals, defensively organised. Perhaps away from home they can improve, they have had a few indifferent results.

Maybe the squad is a little light but they are getting the results.

Unai Emery is getting a lot of plaudits, and rightly so. He seemed to have a feeling of unfinished business after his time at Arsenal and you look at his CV and what he achieved since that spell and now with Villa, he is a top quality coach getting his just rewards.

  19. 'We were efficient, not brilliant'published at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-2 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraloa, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We were efficient today. We were not brilliant.

"It was very important for us to score first. Whenever you score first, you can attack the spaces more.

"They are not a team that gives you a lot of transitions but, at the end especially, we had some chances to score the second one. Luckily we did."

On recent form: "The players have continued working really hard and now we are getting the results. But from the first day they have been trying to implement what I have been telling them.

"Now we have players in very good form and we still need points. We want more points and we have to take them because we're playing well.

"It's easier to push, to train when results are coming but this group has done it when we were not winning any games.

"We have to continue taking the games week to week. We have a difficult one at the weekend against Manchester United but we have to give it a go, play to our level and see if that is enough to get a result."

On Man Utd game: "We have to recover well now because it is going to be tough. It's the third game in a week and the third one is always the tough one. We'll see if we have to change some players."

  20. Bournemouth seeing results of hard work - Iraolapublished at 22:40 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-2 Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola says his team were "not brilliant, but efficient" in their 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace and are seeing the results of their hard work.
