I can't decide whether this is a really good time or a really bad time for Luton to be playing City at the weekend...

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Manchester City

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalscorer Leon Bailey to Amazon Prime on whether Villa are in the title race: "I've always said to myself, we shouldn't be looking at titles, instead take things one step at a time. We should remain humble and put in the work every day.

"Then we focus on the challenge ahead.

"Come the end of the season we'll see what happens at the end."

That was a footballing masterclass by Aston Villa. You can't say they're not title contenders after that performance, that was no fluke. Completely outplayed the champions!

  4. 'Mature and resilient performance'published at 22:32 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

    FT: Sheff Utd 0-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to BBC Match of the Day: "Really happy. It was a very mature and resilient performance - when it got exciting for them, it was our fault but everybody was mostly really concentrated and focused.

"We didn’t let the atmosphere really happen, I think everyone was really ready to go for it and we calmed that down.

"The first goal was a great goal and the second goal was outstanding - we would have loved to have ended it earlier but it was a nice recovery from Darwin and a super pass.

"I would have taken 1-0 as it was nervy, each throw-in was the most dangerous situation, it was really difficult to defend but we came through that. We take the three points and keep going, recover and go again."

  5. 'Touch frustrated if I'm honest'published at 22:30 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

    FT: Sheff Utd 0-2 Liverpool

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder: “Playing a team that is one of the best in Europe, certainly one of the best in England the Premier League for a number of years - an incredible manager and some fabulous players – I was delighted with the approach and the attitude of the players

"We are disappointed we haven't got something from the game - we knew would be on the back foot but we want to win and we are all in it to do that, first and foremost I asked for a performance and I definitely got that but I'm disappointed we haven't got a result.

“We knew they would have a lot of the ball but our shape was good and I felt comfortable – I think we were unfortunate with the goal. Jack Robinson trips over and they go in 1-0 but we were in the game and we wanted to take it deep which we did. First half we had two or three breakaway counters which we maybe should have done better with."

On a possible penalty for a Ibrahima Konate nudge on James McAtee and Darwin Nunez's challenge on Jayden Bogle in the build-up to Liverpool's second goal: “I can’t see how the centre-half can just push McAtee over in the box and the foul on Bogle, he’s wrapped his legs around him.

"You can say he's got the ball but 20-30 years coming through him to get the ball was allowed - it's not allowed now. That led to the goal and even before that he’s a lucky boy because he’s jumped into Jack Robinson without looking and that's a clear foul. So, yeah, I'm a touch frustrated if I'm completely honest."

  6. 'Fans have been spoilt here in recent times'published at 22:28 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-2 Bournemouth

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson: "Obviously it wasn't good enough. The fact is, the expectations are high. Hence the boos.

"People came here to see us win and we weren't capable of winning. To be fair, we did play against a good side and Bournemouth did well, they made life very, very difficult for us.

"We tried hard but we weren't able to cause them enough problems.

"I think the score line is a little bit hard on us but this is what happens when it is 1-0 and you're throwing everything forward and we're making lots of changes in the hope that somewhere we can find a goal out of nowhere, then they get the second one.

"The fact is, the fans have been spoilt here in recent times. They're used to seeing us do very well at home and get good results. This year, we've not been able to do that.

"They came here tonight after our draw at West Ham and expected us to blow Bournemouth away but they are false expectations because Bournemouth are not an easy team to blow away. They're in very good form, they're very confident.

"All I can say in our defence is that the players tried hard, they worked hard. I can't blame them for lack of effort but, in terms of quality, we couldn't find the quality to win the game.

"The performance for [the fans] has to be a winning performance and it wasn't. What you say to them is that if they are really true supporters, they will help us through this difficult period.

"If they seriously believe we aren't trying hard enough then I don't think they're analysing the game the way they should.

"If they want us to be better, we realise that. We want to be better ourselves. Fans are the lifeblood of the club, we want to keep them happy and, at the moment, we aren't able to do so."

On tough games coming up: "If you're telling me now that the teams coming up are are even stronger that Bournemouth on paper and you're suggesting that we're going to lose those games, it's going to be very difficult for me to stand here and say anything that is going to make your suggestion sound ridiculous."

The worst Man Utd team ever, Ten Hag has lost the dressing room, there is no plan or style etc...sit just 3 x points behind Man City who are the best team that ever played the game (apparently). Football is a funny old game.

    Alan, Devon

United 3 points off City with a goal difference of zero. Madness. Absolute madness.

    FT: Sheff Utd 0-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool goalscorer Dominik Szoboszlai: “It’s never an easy game, an away game – we came here to take the three points and we did."

On Virgil van Dijk's classy first-time opener: “He is doing the same thing every game at corners and they [defenders] are taking care of him – probably not one player, sometimes two or three players – but I’m happy for him and it is only the first of many."

On his goal, assisted by Darwin Nunez: “Thanks to Darwin, good reaction from him after he lost the ball, he won it back and played it to me and I just did what I should do one-on-one."

On being second in the table: “It’s very nice and hopefully we can be there at the end."

Hearing lots of positive noises about Utd, but let’s be frank, they’ve scraped a 1-goal victory against a poor Chelsea team with one of the worst away performances of the season. Still a LOT of work to do…

    Mark

Andrew: Probably the best United performance this season. They were arguably a little too open at the back at times, but after Ten Hag’s words yesterday that was a much braver, more dynamic performance.

  11. 'A great night for Aston Villa'published at 22:20 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2023

FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Manchester City

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalscorer Leon Bailey to Amazon Prime: "It's very special. On a night like this it's even more special. To get the win, to score the goal, it's a magnificent feeling.

"I can't put it into words how I feel right now. We showed great character and worked extremely hard to get these three points.

"I struggled during my first season but I knew what I was capable of. People believed in me. I'm here to help as much as possible, and I'm so grateful to be able to do that.

"[Unai Emery] has been amazing. His way of doing things is different. He knows exactly what he wants. Day in and day out he knows what he's doing to help up get the three points.

"It was a great game. A great night for the fans. A great night for Aston Villa."

Absolutely loved that Villa performance. Quick, effective and brave! Not seen City be dominated that much in years if ever. And how good was Torres! Wow!

    Simon, Watford fan

Jon: Emery masterclass that. Brilliant. What a job he's done. Can't believe how underrated he was as a manager.

That noise at the final whistle is one of the loudest you will hear all season.

A very well deserved win for Villa, it was no fluke either.

This was earmarked as the biggest test for Villa so far this season, one of the top, if not the top team in Europe coming here. They've not only won, they were the better team.
