Sheffield United v Luton (15:00 GMT)

    Neil Johnston
    BBC Sport at Bramall Lane

Sam Allison, who is about to become the first black referee to take charge of a top-flight game for 15 years: "I love football so much. It's in my blood and it's innate. I'd do anything to be involved in the game. Unfortunately, I didn't reach the pinnacle as a player but hopefully one day I can do it as a referee."

  2. 'We have the talent but it's about keeping on going'published at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-3 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It was very good and well deserved. I think the boys played very well. It's amazing so let's enjoy it."

Scoring before half-time: "It changes everything doesn't it? We had a good chance before, the same situation with Anthony Elanga but he decided to finish it [instead of passing]. Less said about that. It's hard work, it's tough. We have the talent but it's about keeping on going. We will go again."

Wood first goal: "Just before it we had the same movement and the same chance. This was brilliant. Well played by Chris. We know it is a long period that he has been doing this."

Gibbs-White captain: "He's playing very good and I think he can lead the team."

On the game plan: "We know Newcastle press very high. We know when the moment is there, we have to spin and go. It's all about their attitude to the game. Now we have to rest and recover. The next game is a tough one. I think we can deliver a good game again."

Counter attacking performance: "That was the idea. We know how Newcastle play, they are very aggressive. If you keep the ball and beat the press then you know you will have places."

BBC Radio 5 Live commentator at Vitality Stadium

This is Andoni Iraola’s first experience of a Boxing Day fixture. They’re usually off this week in Spain.

But the Bournemouth boss will be marking his festive debut in English football by watching the game from the stands. He’s serving a one-match touchline ban today.

  4. 'Both teams shouldn't be written off'published at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

Sheffield United v Luton (15:00 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic striker for BBC Sport

I wouldn't quite say they have turned a corner, but both teams have shown recently why they shouldn't be written off as relegation certainties.

Luton in particular have really surprised me this season. They got a great win against Newcastle last time out and their reaction after Tom Lockyer's collapse in their previous game spoke volumes about the spirit in their team and the club as a whole. It was great to see.

Sheffield United got a brilliant result too at Villa Park and surprised everyone with their draw - although they are probably disappointed they didn't win.

Blades boss Chris Wilder has already got one home victory under his belt, against Brentford, since taking charge at the start of the month, and I think his side will edge this one too.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-0

A huge day for Sam Allison. The Premier League's first black referee for 15 years had a dual career as a match official and firefighter before turning his attention to officiating on a full-time basis.

Just the man then to handle the heat inside Bramall Lane for this relegation six-pointer.

  6. 'Credit the big man, he scored three brilliant goals'published at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-3 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It starts from the start of the week when we start building into the game. It's about building our own identity with how we want to play. We showed that today and credit the big man [Chris Wood]. He scored three brilliant goals today."

What they have been working on: "Becoming a together team in the way that we want to play and how the manager wants us to play. It's been a massive positive."

On working with Nuno at Wolves: "I knew him before and I tried to help the boys in helping create the identity of the team."

  7. 'I don't mind where I score'published at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-3 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest's Chris Wood, speaking to Match of the Day: "We needed three points and it was fantastic for the side to get it. This is a tough place to come. The boys did extremely well.

"We felt like we did well in the second half, we felt like we were the better side. Nice to get the three points.

"We showed we have quality in this team and a team that will work hard.

"I don't mind where I score! It is nice coming back to Newcastle, I really enjoyed my time here, it is a great bunch of lads and staff."

  8. 'What a run the Cherries are on'published at 14:44 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    Bournemouth v Fulham (15:00 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic striker for BBC Sport

Title-winner Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

For the fixtures over the festive period on 26, 27 and 28 December, he takes on Samuel T Herring, frontman of Baltimore-based synth-pop band Future Islands and an Everton fan.

Dominic Solanke is on fire for Bournemouth and what a run the Cherries are on. I just did not see that coming, but then I didn't expect Fulham to lose at home to Burnley on Saturday, either.

This is a hard one to call but I am going to go with the form team. Bournemouth have won five of their past six games and drew with Aston Villa in the other one, and I am backing Andoni Iraola's side again here.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

Samuel's prediction: There are going to be goals, lots of goals. 2-2

  9. Analysis: Pundits purr over 'brilliant' Solankepublished at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

And Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer was full of praise for the "brilliant" Dominic Solanke after the Bournemouth striker scored a hat-trick in the 3-2 Premier League win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

    Bournemouth v Fulham (15:00 GMT)

    Chris Wise
BBC Radio 5 Live commentator at Vitality Stadium

All eyes on Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke today. A first ever Premier League hat-trick against Nottingham Forest just before Christmas, and now only Mo Salah and Erling Haaland have scored more league goals than him this season.

No wonder talk of him forcing his way into the England set up ahead of the Euros is beginning to increase in volume.

Fair to say that Forest result has not been well received at Bramall Lane. Sheffield United are going to start this game seven points from safety. It also means Luton cannot climb out of the bottom three today.

  13. 'A clear team with very good organisation'published at 14:35 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    Bournemouth v Fulham (15:00 GMT)

    Fulham

Manager Marco Silva says Fulham's trip to Bournemouth will be a match between two attacking teams trying to win the game.

Silva was asked about the notion of 'chaos football' being implemented by Andoni Iraola at Bournemouth, but he disputed that reading of their tactics.

"They are not at all disorganised," Silva said. "They have dynamic in their game. and what will make the difference is always the dynamic of any team. They have a dynamic, they have a way to press and you can see there is organisation.

"They prefer to go man to man in certain moments of the game and press really high in other moments as well. It's clear for us the moments they want to do it. On the ball, you can see clear organisation in the way they attack and what they want to do.

"You can see some players with more freedom to do certain things on the pitch, but I see a clear team with very good organisation and a team that tries to play to win. That is what they are going to face against us as well.

"We are going to be there to do the same thing, to keep our organisation if we have to but in other moments we need to give a game to them and play to win the game.

"We are going to see two teams who are very well organised in certain aspects and with ideas to win the football match."

A huge game at the bottom of the table between Sheffield United and Luton Town at Bramall Lane.

The media are being treated to turkey stew before the match which I can confirm is going down a treat.

Those people who say Newcastle should have spent more may want to consider FFP rules and look at what’s happening to some clubs. Have a look at the first few squads Man City had after their investment. It has to build over time.

Newcastle kept pace with the visitors in a frantic first half, but they ran out of ideas in the second as Forest, and Chris Wood in particular, ran riot.

A first win under Nuno Espirito Santo ensures Forest stay out of the relegation zone and move above Everton in the table.
