Hey look, I know it's easy to knock Man Utd but, for now at least, they're playing the better football.

Alejandro Garnacho burst down the right and plays in Christian Eriksen who has to hit it, but instead tries to feed Marcus Rashford. His pass is poor though and trickles behind the England forward.

Janner: Got to feel for Villa tonight. Old Trafford is a scary place to come... not because of the atmosphere anymore but because the stadiums falling apart

  3. 'Quansah is a fantastic talent'published at 20:14 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Burnley 0-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk speaking to Amazon Prime: "It's obviously very important. It's been a very intense nine or 10 days with different challenges. We did very well. It was a bit chaos after the [second] goal that was disallowed but I think we played well.

"I don't think there was a lot of luck. It's never easy. They play at home and we have to be very good and ready to suffer as well. We were good and with the changes we made, I'm happy with the result.

"Jarell Quansah is a fantastic talent and up and coming. From the moment he made his debut he's been improving. It's nice to see. I really like that and if I can help him, I will. I'm very pleased for him."

On Darwin Nunez scoring: "As a striker if you don't score for a little bit it could get in your head but I don't really see that with the guys. It's really good to see and we have to keep pushing each other to stay hungry. We have a lot of hunger in the team so let's keep that up."

On the title race: "It's December so we won't think too far ahead but I'm very pleased because it's the last game for us in the year so now it's time to have a little bit of time with the family. We are definitely hoping to be up there competing for the title so let's see where we will be."

    Bright play from Villa.

McGinn releases Bailey early there which is key, he then has plenty of room to run at Dalot and get a cross in.

Evans to the rescue for United though by blocking the cross and sending the ball out of play.

First shot on target and it's the hosts that have it as Christian Eriksen picks a looping ball out of the air and gets his nose over his toes to keep a powerful effort down, but it's straight at Emiliano Martinez in the Villa net.

Nicholas: Rashford back on the left wing? Doing the same thing again and again but expecting a different result is a sign of...?

Noel: You always get freak results on a Boxing Day, a small club beating its more fancied rival...so I'm going for a home win! With the boy Hojlund scoring one or two!

Sir Dave Brailsford is sat in the Manchester United directors box with interim chief executive Patrick Stewart tonight.

Former chief executive David Gill was chatting with Edwin van der Sa when the INEOS director of sport made his way to his seat.

It's his first chance to see in the flesh how good, or otherwise, United are.

Brailsford made his mantra 'marginal gains' during his time in charge of the British Cycling team.

On the evidence of the season so far, it will need more than 'marginal' improvement to change the course of United's fortunes.

I think what people were perplexed about after the West Ham defeat was Erik ten Hag saying 'We have to stick with the plan'.

With the greatest respect we cannot see a plan on the pitch at the moment. I'm sure he has one and wants to instill it into his side, but we are yet to see evidence of it.

Predict a 2-0 United win with Hojilund scoring twice. That first XI is nowhere near as bad as people make out and ETH will come good. He needs time and his plans backed. Crisis will be averted again.

  15. 'It's insane when you see that'published at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Burnley 0-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to Amazon Prime: "We tried to find what was the Liverpool way and it looks a little bit like throwing hurdles in front of us and finding ways to get over it. We played an incredible game and then it was just 1-0 which was really strange! That's the way it is in football. With the most difficult situation in the whole game probably, we make it 2-0.

"It's wonderful. That's a super goal [from Diogo Jota]. Another player who could have been in contention [for MOTM] was Wataru Endo, what a game he played.

"We've created a lot of chances recently and haven't used an awful lot of them but in the end it's about performing. We've played four games in 10 days and you just have to get through it. Now we have five days between now and the next game so it feels like we should go on holiday? No, the boys will have two days off with the family.

"It was a great first goal. Cody Gakpo played really well - there were so many good combinations. A striker needs these situations. This time the ball is in. In general, the game we played was exactly how we wanted to play. In that time they had no solutions but we left the door open and that's how it is.

"[Darwin Nunez] is an incredible finisher but if a striker doesn't score, the whole system is not the same. You question everything. It's not just the outside world, but you question everything. But it was just in the moment and he has it so it's all good."

On the second disallowed goal and an apparent push on Mohamed Salah into an offside position: "Only somebody who has never played football can make this an offside. It's insane when you see that.

"Why do referees create their own view on something? We all watch football and need the referee but we need them to make the right interpretations of the rules. It's like, wow. Handball is sometimes handball and all these kinds of things."

On the title race: "It does, absolutely. That's nice. It will probably change and that's no problem. It was not perfect but we are where we are."

Erik ten Hag said it pre-match, Manchester United cannot just be looking at Rasmus Hojlund for creativity.

The likes of Marcus Rashford who has historically been a goalscorer for the side has to step up, Bruno Fernandes the captain and leader has to step up. They have all got to contribute to chance creation and scoring goals.
