FT: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Man Utd

With their win tonight, Nottingham Forest have eased their relegation concerns heading into 2024.

And they did so in style, recording their first Premier League victory over Manchester United since 1994.

But United's struggles go on and Erik ten Hag once again has plenty to think about.

You can read Simon Stone's report from the City Ground over here.

    That's all from me tonight.

Don't forget, you can watch Match of the Day from 22:25 GMT tonight - and we'll be back tomorrow for the final Premier League action of 2023 as Arsenal travel to Fulham and Tottenham host Bournemouth.

  2. 'We manage games better now'published at 20:27 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 3-2 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany, speaking to Sky Sports: "Extremely proud of the team. I always am. The frustration is two fold, frustrated because you are doing what you need to do in a game like this and come away with something. I feel my understanding of the rules was tested today. I really struggle to reconcile with the things we are told and the things I am seeing in games.

"I have the image of the handball denying us a goalscoring opportunity and I am comparing it with the handball against Forest where we get a goal taken off. I have to sleep past this.

"We manage games a little better now. We are understanding the moments more and we are dangerous. It is in both boxes where we have struggled a bit. Today we got the goals but I will lool forward to being on the training ground and work out the details that can help us going forward.

"If I can wish anything for this team in 2024 is to turn what we did today into one win, two wins etc and keep going."

On Lyle Foster scoring: "That is the reason why I have a happy feeling after this game. I have frustration and disappointed with the result and some of the things I mentioned but at the same time, we had a real human tragedy almost with Lyle when the kid broke down. To see him rebuilding his happiness, to me as a coach, not even a coach but as a human being it is a beautiful story for me to observe."

  3. 'There's a fight in us'published at 20:27 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

FT: Man City 2-0 Sheff Utd

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

On daunting task of facing Man City: "It is [daunting] when you walk out and they have five trophies staring at you! There is a reason they have those trophies. It's a really difficult one even for teams that are close to City. There's a big difference between the clubs in terms of what they put out and the quality they possess. I have full amount of respect for Pep [Guardiola] and the players and their attitude to the game. We tried to be pragmatic and stay in the game as the majority of teams do at the Etihad and we have to take those half chances in big moments and we didn't.

"I'm looking on reflection on six games and I've been delighted with the players attitude and how they've worked with what we've had to do. Now we have an FA Cup game and a few days we can work on the training ground, I'm sure we can get better in the second part of the season.

"It was quite a long afternoon for everybody connected to Sheffield United. We have some young players that will learn from this experience. There's not a lot of Premier League experience in the group so we can take something from the game but I'm looking at the six games I've had in charge we've had some incredible challenges. We're a bit disappointed that we've not taken more points, we've had a couple of missed opportunities.

"A bit of adjustment in January will make us stronger and better. They're strong together and that's easy to see, this is a group that have a great attitude and now we need to get better in our play in and out of possession.

"There's a fight in us, we have to be competitive and narrow the gap. There's a fight in us and I'm clearly seeing that and the supporters are too. We need to be better at the other parts of the game, away from the fight. We've conceded some poor goals but when the players walk off they have left everything out there."

Plans to do business in January? "Yes, we've had some meetings on recruitment. It's been very positive, hopefully in that players will move out and you don't want to carry anybody so there will be some going out and some coming in to make us better. It's the first time in the Premier League for a lot of these players and we'll take it game by game."

Nigel: Sums it up for me. Forest were fighting to the end, we just looked like we were turning up again and hoping for the best. We can’t continue to paper over cracks.

  8. 'Injuries hold us back in process'published at 20:20 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

FT: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to Sky Sports: "It's clear the result is very disappointing. We should have invested more in these moments. We created less before half-time. We didn't do [enough]. The second half was better.

"We are losing the game by a goal and you saw the fight in the team. We had our chances, the football in the second half was better. They kept believing and going until the end but of course when the result is this, we are disappointed.

"The players are not happy with this but we have to do better. We haven't played with the same team in a row. We had to change again so every time we have to swap our team. That doesn't help or support the routines of the team and it explains why you are so inconsistent.

"We had nine different partnerships in the back. It doesn't matter as well, the fans don't want to hear this, they want to see us winning and that is what we have to serve them."

What is the main issue? "The injuries. Also some issues but mainly the injuries hold us back in the process. In January we have a lot of players returning so then our levels can be higher.

"Definitely [Dave Brailsford] will see we have our problems. You want to build on the last result but we have to change our striker."

Will you talk with INEOS group? "It will happen. No doubt about that. We will work together to set high targets of course for achievements and structures, we will talk about that."

Tattz: So good to see Nuno back with a bang. Was sorry things didn’t work out for him at Spurs - but he’s showing that he can do an excellent job in the premier league. Forest lucky to have him.

  11. 'Players believe and trust in Nuno'published at 20:15 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

FT: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Man Utd

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White speaking to BBC Match Of The Day: "Manchester United are good on the counter attack so we tried to avoid that as much as possible. I thought we were in control in the first 20 minutes then it opened up. I thought we deserved the win tonight.

"At half-time the manager said we needed to be more aggressive with and without the ball. We fully deserved the three points. My goal? I am delighted to help the boys get the three points. I saw the space was there, stayed composed, breathed, and picked my spot. Thankfully it went in.

"I believe this club is really creating history. The only way now is forward especially with the manager coming and the players believing and trusting in him."

On Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner's error which allowed United to equalise: "If one of us makes a mistake, it's the whole team that makes a mistake. We've got each other's backs. Matty has dug us out of plenty of holes."

It was a finish worthy of winning any match by Morgan Gibbs White.

But a mention too for Anthony Elanga.

With his assist, the former Manchester United man has been involved in four goals in his last three Premier League games - and he’s had a hand in more goals than any Forest player this season (10).

  13. 'The players are showing they can do it'published at 20:12 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

FT: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Man Utd

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo speaking to Sky Sports: "Let's celebrate. Enjoy the moment because it's well deserved.

"I think it was a good performance. We started well, we controlled well and defended compact. We had good spells in possession. In the second half we went for it and created some combinations. The first goal is very nice. Knowing to achieve that space you have to combine. The composure of the finish too, it was a beautiful goal.

"I didn't do anything, honestly. What we are trying to do is to create an idea. The talent is there so it's the confidence to play. It's our responsibility in how we defend. But they have to believe in the idea. The spaces was there and it's a credit to the players because we are only here for 11 days and they are the ones really working very hard.

"The first game was hard to take but the players reacted at St James' Park and today again. We know it's a long way. Enjoy it but then recover. We have the FA Cup to prepare for and then after that we have to keep in going. We cannot relax.

"We know each other and it's a process, not just in the training session but in the meetings. The players are showing they can do it, I am just here to help.

"It's a bad pass [from Matt Turner] because I think the situation is controlled but that's what we want - to believe in the idea to try to play. The only way you can find space is to play, to combine and have the confidence to play the ball. That is the only way we will create.

"We had Morgan Gibbs-White when he was 16 but now he is a different man and the credit must go to Steve [Cooper] because I find a different player. He is mature. What we want from him is to be this guy we can rely on and to give him the ball because he is so talented."

  14. 'We should enjoy the moment'published at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

FT: Nottingham Forest 2-1 Man Utd

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo speaking to BBC Match Of The Day: "We have to thank the fans. They were amazing. We know the atmosphere at the City Ground can help the players get a boost.

"I am so happy for the fans because they can go home and keep celebrating. I told the players 'let's enjoy the moment'. Performances like this deserve to be celebrated.

"I think we played good. In the first half we controlled the game but didn't create many chances. We controlled Manchester United, we know where they have quality. It's about being together. The players did well.

"We had shots in the first half but needed more accuracy. I think the second half it changed, we created more and then the first goal is a good combination and a fantastic finish. We conceded but its my responsibility. You can say Matt [Turner] did not do well, but they tried to play with the idea. The way the players bounced back from that moment showed their character. Knowing every moment in the game is special. Not only with the ball but without the ball.

"We show it's important to compete no matter who we face. Credit to the players because it's only early days. We have only been here 11 days."

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "The secret is the way the players are working. We are here 11 days so the credit is for them and the way they fight as a team.

"I think we started good and had good tempo. We controlled Manchester United. They have a lot of talent and we didn't allow them the space to play and I think it was a deserved win."

On Morgan Gibbs-White: "He is playing well and growing each day and I am very happy for him. He deserves it."

On Forest's form: "When you perform well and play good, the confidence has to grow. We are starting to feel that we have some talent and we are improving. It is easier when you play well."

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen speaking to BBC MOTD: "This season in general has been one step forward and two steps back and it felt like that today. Our aim was to get three points so it's definitely disappointing to come away with zero.

"We tried our best but sometimes the luck and the better decisions in the final third, the better defending and the small details don't happen.

"We had our chances. They had a lot less but scored them. At the moment we don't. We need a few chances to score goals and it makes things more difficult.

"Everyone is just trying to get goals to help the team. We are in the situation to score but at the moment it won't go in.

"Things will heal and get better. There's only one way forward and that's to work hard. Sometimes it goes against us. As a footballer you want the best game every day but the only way to do that is to work."

Do you believe things will get better? "Yes, I do believe that, yes."

Who is there to come back where you think 'wow, this is going to make a huge difference'?

The thing that troubles me with Erik ten Hag is I don't know what game he was watching when he comes out and answers like that.

There comes a time when he has to take responsibility. He has spent over £400m.

So, Erik ten Hag remains adamant things will improve once United get players back from injury.

They have just one league fixture next month, against Tottenham on 14 January, following an FA Cup meeting with Wigan.

It remains to be seen whether he will still be in the hot seat by then.
