  1. 'The difference was Crystal Palace's quality'published at 18:31 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    FT: Crystal Palace 3-1 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It’s always hard to take a defeat, it’s always very painful. I can’t complain about the effort form the players or the mentality, the difference was the quality and decisiveness in the penalty areas from Crystal Palace. That’s why they won the game. We said before the game, we need to stop Eze and Olise and we didn’t.

"A minor bit of contact from Wissa in the second half it’s an a goal. Mateta’s pass just gets to Eze and it’s a goal. That’s football, we just need to continue with it.

"Prefer to win, but what we need to focus on is what we can do, we need to look into training, the first and third goals we conceded. We created a number of opportunities and we need to do more.

"You can see my smile, looking forward to getting Ivan Toney back. He’s a great player and a big personality."

  2. 'I am the proudest manager in the league'published at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 3-2 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany, speaking to MOTD: "Today is probably the most frustrated I've felt. I take a lot of pride in how we played but in terms of getting results it is is frustrating to see how this game played out.

"It won't make sense to anyone outside but I think I am the proudest manager in the league. I have no doubt they will bounce back from this and will keep going."

On Lyle Foster: "I don't know how he does it. I saw him when he was at his lowest point. It makes me emotional to think about it because it was a tragedy. To see him enjoying with the team I am happy for him."

On decisions made during the game: "Some of the things that are happening I don't understand. Against Forest we had a goal disallowed for handball that is lighter than this. I am trying to understand how these things happen. Everything was soft.

"I know we have to look at ourselves, we made some mistakes but we did some great things.

"I have played the game so I have an understanding when a player is trying to make something out of a situation. We got two yellow cards for the softest fouls ever, I cam blame my players for it but it happened on both sides but it wasn't handled the same way for both sides.

"Right now I feel sorry for the players, the fans and the clubs. It was such a good performance.

"I am not having a go at the referee, we all make mistakes, we made mistakes today, but you have to allow that. My understanding today was tested."

  3. 'Man Utd have been horrible at times'published at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

HT: Nottingham Forest 0-0 Man Utd

    Jamie Redknapp
Former Tottenham midfielder on Sky Sports

They’ve been horrible at times, offensively and defensively, especially down the right side. There’s been no appetite to play at times, Wan-Bissaka and Antony. Wan-Bissaka’s lack of desire to get back. If Nottingham Forest show an ambition to get forward and win this game, they will.

Rashford is working on scraps, but his movement is non-existent. He has to do so much more, he can play up front but he looks like he doesn’t want to run around for his team.

Forest have to really believe. Out wide, they were so good out wide on Boxing Day. Get it to Elanga, take on Dalot one on one. They should be full of confidence. They’ve been much better than Manchester United.

  7. 'The fans have always been with us'published at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    FT: Crystal Palace 3-1 Brentford

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I am delighted because it’s so long since we won a game, you forget how hard it is to win a game. You worry when you go ahead when the opposing team attack but throughout the game, I’m really happy with how we defended and attacked. I’m just delighted to have won the game,

"Olise against Chelsea was the best player on the pitch alongside Gallagher, since he’s come back from his long injury he’s been brilliant. All the praise that will get heaped on him is well-deserved.

"It should give us a lift. In some of the games, we had Luton and Bournemouth one after the other and we didn’t do well. It was a really poor time. We knew we had a very difficult run of games, but we didn’t get many points and we didn’t have much luck on our side against some tough opponents.

"The crowd is always with us here. One game against Bournemouth, we underperformed, Bournemouth were good, they voiced their displeasure after that but rightly so, but they were entitled to. In my five and a bit years here, very rarely have the crowd not been with us. Grateful for the fans today, because they’ve pulled us through some difficult moments."

  8. 'We feel very strong at home'published at 18:25 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 3-2 Burnley

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to MOTD: "It was very important after our last two matches without points like we want.

"It was very important to be here with our supporters. We did very good work, we struggled in some moments. I respect Burnley a lot because they are doing a lot of good work.

"The goals, VAR and the red card in the second half. They were close to getting something and we had to push until the last minute but we carried on doing our idea and in the end we got the penalty. Winning in the last moment with some emotion, sometimes it is important.

"It is very difficult, we are very happy we are being competitive and at home we feel very strong with our support. Every match is difficult, the Premier League is the most difficult league in the world."

  9. 'My favourite performance of the season'published at 18:23 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    FT: Wolves 3-0 Everton

    Wolves

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil speaking to PLP: "An incredible week really. Nine points in six days with players missing, is an incredible effort from everyone. The work that goes in behind the scenes has helped the team. It was probably my favourite performance of the season.

"The togetherness is huge. We have always managed to bounce back and today we had a good understanding of what the players needed to do. Without the ball everybody did their bit. Big mention to Tommy Doyle, I thought he was excellent coming into the team.

"I was disappointed the two goals were marginally offside, especially for Pedro Neto on his return. We looked a real threat with lots of complicated movements in the box. 28 points from 20 games is amazing, so I’m delighted.

"It was incredible the amount of people and pundits who wrote this team off at the start of the season. I look forward to working hard to try and prove them wrong. The transfer window opens and we will do our best to strengthen. I just love working with the current group and my focus is on the players I have.

"This group have it in them. They have shown glimpses of it before. Maybe I’ve nudged them in the right direction and given them guidance. They have shown quality when they need to. It’s still half a season to go but it’s a really good day and a really good week."

On the celebration tribute to Maria Lemina: "He’s a big part of everything we do. There’s no way we’d be anywhere near 28 points without him. I know we’re enjoying this moment and it’s hard when you mention him because I know he’s suffering, but hopefully he gets a small lift. I spoke to him and he understands he has as long as he needs to get back to the moment and he has our full support."

Raphael Varane went closest to breaking the deadlock in that first half - in the wrong goal following a mix-up with Andre Onana.

Manchester United have had one attempt, Aaron Wan-Bissaka's blocked shot, while Forest have failed to land any of their six attempts on target.

Not too much to talk about, then, so lets get more reaction to this afternoon's Premier League action.

There was no shortage of goals elsewhere. A reminder of today's other results:

A final attack for Manchester United?

There's no urgency and the whistle goes before a ball can be sent into the penalty area.

Goalless at the break. It can only get better, right?

Really good centre-midfield play from Gibbs-White. They work the ball well to the wide area and Forest won another corner.

Elanga has moved to the left, but started on the right. He's moved there because Antony is not tracking back on the Man United right-hand side.

Marcus Rashford presented Antony with half a shooting chance in the box but the Brazilian got crowded out.

A minute later, Antony shaped like he was ready to beat a defender but in the end, didn't even try.

He is Manchester United's second most expensive signing, behind Paul Pogba. I am not entirely sure what his strength is.

Antony is penalised for a foul and hands Nottingham Forest the chance to whip a ball into the box from deep.

Instead, Danilo plays the ball short to Morgan Gibbs-White and a couple of loose passes later the ball is out for a Manchester United throw-in on the opposite side of the pitch. A waste.

That's what I have found frustrating this year when watching Marcus Rashford.

We have seen flashes of what we know he is capable of, but it just hasn't added up to the Marcus Rashford that we saw last season.
