So that's where we leave you for today.

Leicester continued to set the pace at the top of the Championship table and Ipswich and Leeds aren't far behind as the top three all registered maximum points.

At the bottom, the Sheffield Wednesday resurgence continued as they lifted themselves off the foot of the table at the expense of managerless Rotherham.

We'll be back for some Championship action in midweek with a full complement of fixtures across Tuesday and Wednesday.

For now though, thank you for joining us.

  2. Maresca praises Daka after rare startpublished at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Plymouth

Patson Daka marked his first start of the season for Leicester City with a goal as the Championship leaders thrashed Plymouth Argyle.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leicester after the game, Foxes boss Enzo Maresca said Daka deserved his chance to play.

“For a manager, it is a very bad moment when you need to take the decision and leave out players who work every day fantastic. Since day one Pat was fantastic and has behaved fantastic, but because I play with one striker and we have Jamie Vardy and we have Kelechi Iheanacho - but football always gives you back everything you give to football

"And Pat because of that, with Kele ill and Jamie has a problem, it was his chance and he took it and he deserved it. He completely deserved it in the way he is a very good guy."

Meanwhile, Plymouth manager Steven Schumacher said he was particularly pleased with his side's first-half display, despite the result.

“I was actually pleased with a lot of aspects of how we played today. I think the performance, the effort and commitment from the players to do what we asked them to do was outstanding," he told BBC Radio Devon.

“In the first half we competed really well with what is the best team in the league at the moment and we got into some brilliant areas and should have scored.

“It should have been level at half-time, but in the second half we have been undone by one moment of quality and a couple of mistakes.”

  3. Watford boss Ismael chuffed with side's 'evolution'published at 18:23 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Watford 1-1 Southampton

    Valerien IsmaelImage source, Rex Features

While the Southampton camp were understandably distraught at Watford's last-gasp equaliser, Hornets boss Valerien Ismael feels it shows his side are developing.

"I'm incredibly proud of the players, the evolution from the team you see," he told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"It's always the comparison with the Leeds game and now, against the third relegated team from the Premier League you see clearly how the team evolves.

"Before we conceded the goal we had two big chances to take the lead with Ken Sema just before half-time as Yaser Asprilla, but the keeper made a massive save.

"For our evolution to attack the top of the table we have to become more ruthless."

  4. 'It was a point earned really'published at 18:19 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Huddersfield 1-1 Bristol City

Tommy Conway earned Bristol City their first point in three games as they held Huddersfield Town to a draw at the John Smith's Stadium.

Speaking to the Huddersfield website, Terriers boss Darren Moore was pleased with the draw despite having taken the lead.

"Conceding the goal straight after half-time when we were in possession was frustrating.

"The way we battled and scrapped it was a point earned really, great resilience shown by the players.

"I thought Kas [David Kasumu] has been fantastic since his return, the way he powered up the pitch and got that counter, not many could have done that for us."

  5. 'We've flung games away'published at 18:16 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Stoke 0-1 Sheff Wed

    Alex NeilImage source, Rex Features

For Stoke, it is now six without a victory and four defeats in a row, leaving them 20th and just two points above the drop zone.

That has increased the pressure on Alex Neil, who doesn't feel his side have had the rub of the green of late.

"The last three games have been the same. We've had opportunities to win, we've been in control," he told BBC Radio Stoke.

"In the first half we looked a bit timid and you could see a bit of anxiety, but we were a lot better second half.

"If the penalty goes in, the crowd gets behind us and we go on to win. But that was their only shot on target in the game.

"We've just flung games away. It's not looked we've both been blown of the park, We just need our chances."

  6. 'It's clear who should've won'published at 18:12 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Norwich 0-0 Preston

    Norwich dejectedImage source, Rex Features

Preston ended a run of three successive league defeats as a battling performance earned them a point against Norwich at Carrow Road.

The Canaries were left frustrated by their visitors, with head coach David Wagner baffled at how his side failed to win the game.

"I have no complaints about the shift put in by the players but offensively we lacked a bit of creativity and were not ruthless," he told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"In a game like this, you will not create nine or 10 clear-cut chances, but we created two or three and these are the moments when you have to kill the game.

"But defensively we played very well, our counter press was top class, we nailed them in the final third and more or less gave nothing away.

"They had their first corner in stoppage time, we had 10 so it's clear who should have won this game - it's frustrating, but I can see good things as well."

  7. Martin frustrated with 'nature' of Hornets equaliserpublished at 18:04 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Watford 1-1 Southampton

    Russell MartinImage source, Getty Images

Watford pegged back Southampton in stoppage-time to secure a 1-1 draw against their play-off rivals.

Southampton manager Russell Martin told BBC Radio Solent: "I'm really disappointed with how it ended of course."

"I thought we were managing the game really well up to that point, I don't think we were hanging on at any point really. "It felt as though we looked the more likely to score when they were committing so many bodies and kept playing through.

"The nature of the goal we concede is what's frustrating me the most, I think it's such a poor goal to concede, they smash one big ball up the middle of the pitch, we should head it clear, and a bit of a lack of communication there.

"I was pleased with the second-half performance, I thought we were good - the first half we gave the ball away way too much in the middle third."

  8. Rohl happy with 'lucky' Owls at Stokepublished at 17:58 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Stoke 0-1 Sheff Wed

Sheffield Wednesday's turn around in form was given another big shot in the arm as they overcame Stoke over in Staffordshire to make it three on the spin.

Danny Rohl's side have won back-to-back games following up last week's win over Blackburn and today's success, while their draw with leaders Leicester means it's three unbeaten.

Anthony Musamba came off the bench to supply the crucial winner, after Cameron Dawson had saved an earlier penalty from Potters forward Ryan Mmaee.

"Maybe you can say today we were a little bit lucky," Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"But this luck we deserve because we invested a lot in the game. Four weeks ago we wouldn't get a point in this kind of game but now you see the improvement of my team.

"Our goalkeeper saved a penalty in the right moment, and we had great energy."

  9. 'We need to take the positives'published at 17:52 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Watford 1-1 Southampton

Rhys Healey's stoppage-time goal ensured a point for Watford as they drew 1-1 with fellow play-off chasers Southampton.

Southampton midfielder, Stuart Armstrong, explained how the Saints can use their frustration to their benefit.

“First 45 minutes we weren’t at our best, we found it a bit tough to play the way we wanted to. We tinkered with a couple of things at half-time and the change of shape helped us in the second half," he told BBC Radio Solent.

“When you draw the game at the end it always hurts. We need to take the positives, 12 unbeaten now.

"We want to be winning games, but if you can’t win don’t lose and every point will count until the end of the season.

"We will be looking to take our frustration from the game today into the game on Wednesday [v Coventry].”

  10. McKenna gushes after 'complete' Ipswich winpublished at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Middlesbrough 1-2 Ipswich

Ipswich kept up their pressure on leaders Leicester with victory at Middlesbrough thanks to goals from Conor Chaplin and Omari Hutchinson.

The win was a fillip for boss Kieran McKenna, who was extremely impressed by the manner of the display, not just the scoreline.

"It was such a complete performance to be fair," McKenna told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"We knew it was going to take that. We gave great care and attention to every aspect of the game. Our high press stopped any flow, our defensive block was really good.

"Set-pieces was good, game management was good. I think the biggest thing was we could have been more clinical."

Microphones and dictaphones have been pressed under managers' chins and on tables around the Championship's press rooms, and those all-important post-match interviews completed.

While the last cups of tea are being poured, and the quotes transcribed, let's have a look at what some of the gaffers have been saying in response to this afternoon's football fare.

  12. Dodds sees improvement room but treasures winpublished at 17:37 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Sunderland 2-1 West Brom

    Dan BallardImage source, Rex Features

Having been part of Tony Mowbray's coaching staff before stepping up to the interim boss role, Mike Dodds had a thought for his old colleague as Sunderland secured themselves an important three Championship points this weekend against West Brom.

The Black Cats scored through Dan Ballard and Dan Neil in the second-half, surviving a late fightback through Brandon Thomas-Asante's goal for victory.

"I'm just really happy for everyone at the football club," Dodds told BBC Radio Newcastle. "The most important thing was getting the three points.

"I didn't like the first half. I didn't like the level of control they had - and we had to tweak a few things. But, for a large spell, we controlled the second half.

"Alex Pritchard did exactly what I expected him to do and impact the game. A free-kick and a clever little reverse pass to set Dan Neil free."

West Bromwich Albion not only lost but also saw former Black Cats striker Josh Maja taken off injured following a challenge by goalscorer Ballard.

"Sunderland have the skill to create problems and were more likely to take control of the game," head coach Carlos Corberan told BBC Radio WM.

"It was a massive foul that Maja received. But those are things that are out of our control.

"This is the second time it has happened to Josh. It happened at Bristol City too. And the same ankle."

  13. 'The difference was Leeds were clinical'published at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

Daniel James grabbed his third goal in three games as in-form Leeds United made it six Championship wins from seven with a clinical performance against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

"It was important after a few weeks where we have conceded one goal, sometimes even two goals, today to return absolutely rock solid defence with a clean sheet," Leeds boss Daniel Farke said.

"It's a really good performance and a massive win for us. I'm pretty delighted."

Jon Dahl Tomasson was pleased with his side's performance but acknowledged Leeds' quality in seeing out their victory.

"The difference with the two teams was the clinical things. We probably got into better areas than the opponent, but played against a very good side," Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson added.

"I think my players did a good job. I think they [Leeds] will get automatically promoted."

Alex Neil described his Stoke side as being scared in the first half, and said they threw the game away at the end. Added that the dressing room was flat as a pancake now.

Third game in a row they’ve lost to late winners and it’s clearly hurting him.

In another realm, they’d have drawn all three but when you’re struggling football can be cruel.

Spare a thought for Stoke debutant keeper Tommy Simkin. Turned 19 yesterday and on course for a clean sheet, only for Sheffield Wednesday's Anthony Musaba to ruin his big day.

Rotherham prop up the Championship table after they lost to Swansea, with Sheffield Wednesday moving above their Yorkshire relegation rivals after beating Stoke.

QPR's win against Hull moves them to within two points of Huddersfield who drew with Bristol City.

Plymouth's 4-0 thumping by leaders Leicester doesn't do their goal difference a lot of good but they occupy 18th position in the table tonight.

Millwall are a point behind them in 19th while Stoke are level on 21 points after their loss to the Owls.

This is how things look at the end of a busy day of action in the Championship.

Leicester maintain their lead at the top of the tree after thumping Plymouth 4-0 while Ipswich kept pace courtesy of their win over Middlesbrough.

Leeds' lunchtime win at Blackburn meant they finished the day in third position while Southampton missed the chance to keep the pressure on Daniel Farke's side as they conceded a late equaliser at Watford.

Sunderland moved to within two points of West Brom after beating the Baggies earlier today while the race for the top six continued as seventh-placed Cardiff beat Millwall and Preston drew with Norwich but Hull's 2-0 loss to QPR was their second defeat in a row.

Might have been a bit of a slow-burner this afternoon, but we didn't half manage to cram a bit of drama in late on.

Now we've had a chance to catch our breath, let's have a look at how things look and just what has gone on over the last four or five hours or so.

  20. 'Vital' three points for Wednesdaypublished at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2023

    FT: Stoke 0-1 Sheff Wed

    John Pearson
Former Sheffield Wednesday forward on BBC Radio Sheffield

The three points are absolutely vital for Sheffield Wednesday. They have two players to thank for that, Cameron Dawson for the penalty save, and Anthony Musaba for the finish.

That was possibly the worst performance they have had under Danny Rohl, they weren't at the races.

It doesn't matter about the performance though, they won't care, the three points are in the bag.
