That's as far as we go with today's Championship live text action.

An entertaining 2-2 in the East Anglia derby between promotion-chasing Ipswich and fierce rivals Norwich set us up perfectly for nine 15:00 GMT games and they did not disappoint with goals and late drama aplenty.

Leeds missed the chance to close the gap on the top two to eight points and improving Sheffield Wednesday scored twice in the final minutes to fight back against QPR to stop the R's from moving out of the relegation zone.

You can read reports from all of today's second-tier games here.

That's not the end of the EFL action for the weekend though.

We'll be back bright and early at 11:45 GMT tomorrow for play-off chasing West Brom's home game with managerless strugglers Stoke.

Then on Monday we'll be back in the West Midlands for league leaders Leicester's trip to Birmingham.

To close for now we send all our well wishes to Luton Town skipper Tom Lockyer who is stable in hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest in the Premier League game at Bournemouth, which was abandoned.

Coventry City fought back from a goal down to deny Leeds an eighth straight home win.

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins was delighted with his side's performance against a team with "unbelievable quality".

“I’m really proud of everybody. I think that when you come to a place like Leeds it is a difficult game, they are a Premier League team, they have Premier League quality," he told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire

"On the back of that, we played on Wednesday they played on Tuesday.

"They’ve got unbelievable depth and unbelievable quality so for us not to just hold them but carry a threat everybody should be really proud.

"We were backed fantastically by the support and the fact we have drawn 1-1 it feels like a win.

  3. 'Frustrated' Dodds upset with team mentalitypublished at 18:20 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    FT: Bristol City 1-0 Sunderland

    Mike DoddsImage source, PA Media

Mike Dodds' winning run as Sunderland caretaker boss came to an end at the hands of Bristol City.

The Black Cats created a number of opportunities to level the scores in the second half, but the Robins managed to hold on for the win.

Dodds was unhappy with his player's mentality during the match, after their slow start that led to Tommy Conway scoring the only goal of the game from the spot.

He told BBC Radio Newcastle: "I'm annoyed, frustrated, angry, disappointed.

"I had a real honest conversation with the players there, I think 15 minutes of madness where we don't stick to the gameplan, we don't stick to the script, ultimately it's cost us the game.

"That's my anger around the result because it was just the mentality thing for me. We moved the ball much quicker, we got the ball forward much quicker.

"I said to the staff on about 70 minutes that's the first time they've got outside their half. I'm angry and disappointed for the fans, the 2,500 who turned up.

"That's a game really we should be coming out with at least a point and there's been too many of those games this season."

Watford weren't the only side to win by a four-goal margin in the Championship today.

Southampton scored two very late goals to put the cherry on top of their win over 10-man Blackburn, but nevertheless Saints boss Russell Martin had lots of positives for his side's display.

"We were so dominant in the first half because of the way the players won the ball back. Some of the play was really amazing to watch," he told BBC Radio Solent.

"We created a lot, should have scored earlier than we did but won the ball back relentlessly, hunted the ball, Gavin [Bazunu] had one big save to make which was a rebound, difficult surface, I thought he did great with that.

"Even with 11 men I thought we were so in control and looked like scoring again and then they went down to 10 men but you have to take advantage of that and I'm pleased we did in the end.

"I'm pleased we got the third and fourth goal because 2-0, it seemed way more convincing than that. I'm really proud of the players."

Watford boss Valerien Ismael was looking for one thing today - a ruthless performance. He has been telling BBC Three Counties Radio just how delighted he was with the Hornets delivering against Preston.

"I’m very pleased with the performance, with the attitude. I think it was a very strong away game.

"We spoke after the Southampton and Ipswich games that we have to become ruthless, to awake our killer instinct.

"I think a the beginning of the game we had two big chances to score, and we didn’t go in front.

"After we concede the goal, the team stayed calm and we came back into the game.

"When we spoke about the second half, I said 'OK, we are on the right way now and we need to become really ruthless when we get the chance'.

"I think the first shot goes in [after the break] and it makes us competitive in another game, and this is what we missed in the previous game. The performance was there, the attitude was there and we were always close. But now, when you are able to be ruthless like that it gives you more chances to win a game."

  6. Manning happy with Robins fighting spiritpublished at 18:05 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    FT: Bristol City 1-0 Sunderland

    Liam ManningImage source, Rex Features

Whilst December is a time for festive cheer, prior to today's match Liam Manning's Bristol City weren't feeling the joy this month.

The Robins had only claimed one point in December before today, but Tommy Conway's penalty saw them pick up all three against Sunderland.

Bristol City manager Liam Manning told BBC Radio Bristol: "[We needed] spirit, fight, a desire to put your body on the line to defend the goal, I think a resilience off the back of a couple of frustrating results - to bounce back and not get high, not get low off the back of wins or losses - and believe in us. The behaviours they showed I thought were outstanding.

"The way we defended the box at times was terrific and then throughout the game I thought we carried a real attacking threat as well.

"[I liked] the way they were driving each other, the way they communicated, the discipline at times - they've got some real threats one-v-one when you look at Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts, two that can at a really high level ask questions and have done this season with anybody.

"Each and every one of the lads should be really proud of what they did today."

Leeds missed the chance to close the gap on the top two to eight points as they were held to a 1-1 draw by improving Coventry today.

Whites boss Daniel Farke was unhappy with his side's ability to make the most of their 20 shots on the opposition goal.

"I'm just feeling disappointed and frustrated. We should have won this game," he told BBC Radio Leeds.

"Coventry put everyone who could defend on their team sheet. They left their creative players out and wanted to sit very compact with a left back as a left winger.

"Sometimes you have to be relentless to open them up and we did that with a fantastic goal from Crysencio Summerville and then we missed chances.

"There was one cross we had to deal with all game and we weren't able to deal with it."

He added: "We had enough chances to win two or three games. After such a game you should come away with four, five or perhaps six goals."

  8. Stats of the daypublished at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    Watford celebrateImage source, PA Media

Now, if you like a stat or three then we have a few for you thanks to the folks at Opta.

    • Goal-happy Watford find themselves in rare form it seems. With a 5-1 win at Preston today, and a 5-0 win over Rotherham last month, this is the first time they have scored 5+ goals in more than one league game in a single season since 2014-15.
    • Crysencio Summerville is the man for Leeds United, and the stats back it up every which way. He has been involved in 14 goals in his past 13 league games, scoring nine and assisting five. He’s been involved in more goals than any other in England’s top four tiers since the start of October (14).
    • Ipswich Town are flying, but did you know that Plymouth are holding their own with the Tractor Boys when it comes to wins at home? Plymouth have won 16 of their 22 home league games in 2023 (D2 L4), with only Ipswich (18) winning more in the top four tiers this calendar year.
  9. Ayala picking up too many cards this Christmaspublished at 17:44 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

Daniel Ayala is booked for RotherhamImage source, Rex Features

It was another bad day for bottom side Rotherham and an even worse one for veteran defender Daniel Ayala.

He was shown a red card at the start of the second half in their 3-2 defeat at Plymouth to become the first player in the top four leagues to be sent off in successive appearances this season.

The former Liverpool man was shown red in last week's 2-1 home reverse by Swansea so was suspended for the midweek defeat by West Bom.

He'll now have Christmas off with a two-match ban.

    David WagnerImage source, PA Media

Like Kieran McKenna, this was David Wagner's first taste of the East Anglian derby as Norwich boss.

Whilst many people wrote them off before the game, Wagner was happy with his side's performance to continue their unbeaten run against the Tractor Boys, which is now at 13 games.

"I think it was a great football match, everything what you need in a derby, a lot of battles, a lot of challenges the lead changed, good goals as well," Wagner told BBC Radio Norfolk.

He continued: "I'm absolutely delighted. I think the players put in a fantastic shift, the effort that they have shown for me deserved a point. They always kept going.

"Ipswich are a good side, you've seen their home record. If you can't win it you have to make sure you can't lose it and this was how it was today.

"A very exciting afternoon, now the first one is played and later in the year we will play the second one at Carrow Road."

    FT: Ipswich 2-2 Norwich

    Kieran McKennaImage source, PA Media

Although many may have expected an Ipswich Town victory, form goes out the window on derby day.

Ipswich didn't get the win today, but showed character to come from behind to claim a well-earned point.

Kieran McKenna told BBC Radio Suffolk: "I thought it was a good performance overall in plenty of different aspects.

"I thought we pressed high really, really well and made it difficult for them to build and limited them to very few chances - and they're a team that score a lot of goals and create a lot of chances.

"We created more than enough to win the game. We didn't manage to do it, we weren't as clinical in their box as we usually are and we gave away two goals which were high, hopeful balls into our box that fell their way.

"That's football, there's lots to be positive and pleased and proud of on the day - both on and off the pitch - just unfortunate we weren't able to get the result to send our fans home really happy.

"But when we reflect there'll be lots of things from today that we can build on."
