What have second-placed Ipswich got now then?

Boss Kieran McKenna shakes his head on the touchline.

They felt there was a foul on Conor Chaplin in the attack that led to the corner Leeds scored from.

No VAR in the Championship of course, although replays look like it would have been very soft anyway.

Great delivery there from Crysencio Summerville, Pascal Struijk is on the front foot, which is not normal for a centre-half.

    Lovely jubbly!

Fans are now behind Leeds, Ipswich are looking a little shaky. A nice start.

    PERFECT start!

Leeds have the goal their bright play has warranted.

Joel Piroe's header from a corner is brilliantly saved by Vaclav Hladky in the Town goal but Leeds skipper Pascal Struijk is there to nod in from a yard out.

You felt Leeds needed to win today and they're up and running now.

This is a really bright start from Leeds.

It feels apt that teams nicknamed the Robins and the Swans would both win their final match before Christmas.

Liam Manning's Bristol City fought back from 2-1 down to beat play-off hopefuls Hull City 3-2.

Managerless Swansea took the three points against Preston thanks to a last-minute winner from Jamie Paterson.

Caretaker Alan Sheehan has now taken eight points from four games in charge of the Welsh side to move them away from the relegation zone.

  9. Ipswich game is important but not decisive - Farkepublished at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Leeds v Ipswich (12:30 GMT)

Leeds boss Daniel FarkeImage source, Rex Features

As you would probably expect, Leeds boss Daniel Farke has down-played the importance today's game could have on his side's long-term promotion prospects.

The Whites are one place but 10 points behind Ipswich but Farke, who won the title with Norwich in each of his past two campaigns at this level, does not think the match will be pivotal regardless of the outcome.

"After this game there is the complete second half of the season to play," Farke said.

"If we win the game it's not like the gap is closed that much, if we draw then nothing changes and if we lose it isn't like our season is over."

He added: "The players are looking forward to it but it's just a game for three points. We could ask the EFL if we win this game that they give us nine points, but I'm quite sure that won't be allowed.

"It's not a decisive game, it's just an important game. In the home games we have been quite successful so far and we are highly motivated to keep that going."

Robbie Fowler got one of the goals as Leeds beat Ipswich 2-0 in March 2002, the last time they did the double over the Blues in a season

You want stats? We got stats (courtesy of our good friends at Opta):

    • Leeds are looking to complete their first league double over Ipswich since the 2001-02 Premier League campaign.
    • Ipswich have lost their past three league visits to Elland Road against Leeds since a 1-0 victory back in September 2015 under Mick McCarthy.
    • Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville has been involved in 14 goals in his past 12 league starts (nine goals, five assists), while at Elland Road he has either scored or assisted in each of his last seven games there (five goals, five assists).
    • Ipswich Town have won 30 league matches during 2023, equalling their club record from 1998. The last side to win more than 30 league games in a year while playing outside of the Premier League was Southampton in 2011 (33), who were promoted from League One into the Championship that year and went on to reach the Premier League the following year.
    • Ipswich have made the best start by a newly promoted side in Football League history, with no side ever having 16 wins from 22 games or as many as 50+ points at this stage (assuming three points/win). In fact, since 2004-05 in the Championship, there have been 35 newly promoted teams who haven’t even reached 16 wins in a full season.

    Leeds v Ipswich (12:30 GMT)

Leeds United go with the same 11 that started last Saturday's 1-1 draw with Coventry. Junior Firpo and Ian Poveda are back on the bench.

Ipswich make one alteration from their 2-2 draw with derby rivals Norwich last Saturday, Axel Tuanzebe is in for Luke Woolfenden in defence. I'm sure the Leeds fans will give the former Manchester United man a warm welcome...

Leeds XI: Meslier, Gray, Rodon, Struijk, Spence; Ampadu, Kamara; James, Summerville, Piroe, Rutter.

Subs: Darlow, Firpo, Cooper, Gruev, Poveda, Joseph, Gelhardt, Gnonto, Bamford.

Ipswich XI: Hladky, Clarke, Tuanzebe, Burgess, Davis, Morsy, Luongo, Burns, Chaplin, Broadhead, Hirst.

Subs: Walton, Williams, Woolfenden, Taylor, Harness, Hutchinson, Jackson, Ball, Ladapo.

If today's game is anything like the last time these two met back in August then we're in for a real treat today.

Leeds turned up at Portman Road with just two points from their first three games following relegation from the Premier League, while Ipswich had started the season with three successive wins.

Things weren't looking too good for the Whites when a Joe Rodon own goal put the home side in front after just seven minutes.

However, much to the surprise of... well, probably everyone in the ground, Leeds then scored three goals in nine minutes to lead 3-1 after 19 minutes.

A stunned Ipswich pulled a goal back in first-half injury time but a Luis Sinisterra goal re-established the away side's two-goal lead before Conor Chaplin rounded off the scoring for the home side with the last kick of the game.

Four months on, that 4-3 reverse remains Ipswich's only home defeat of the season.
