  1. goal

GOAL: Norwich 1-0 Huddersfieldpublished at 16:09 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Sam McCallum (47 mins)

On at half-time and straight in the goals!

Marcelino Nunez stands up a cross to the back stick and Sam McCallum powers home a header that could lift the Canaries up to just outside the top six.

That's his first goal for the club.

  2. Postpublished at 16:09 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Blackburn 1-0 Watford

Blackburn took the lead early on in the first half against Watford and they've almost doubled their advantage early in the second.

Andrew Moran pings a lovely ball towards the onrushing Jake Garrett who half-volleys towards goal but his effort goes off target.

  3. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 16:08 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

Boro have the ball in the net after a deflected free-kick fell fortuitously to Rav van den Berg in the box, but the flag is up swiftly.

Back again for the second half, then.

45 minutes or so for your side to give you some festive cheer ahead of Christmas Day.

It's been one of the most entertaining halves of football I've seen this season.

Three goals, numerous other chances to score and a bit of controversy thrown in for good measure.

Birmingham should really have this game out if sight with the chances they have had.

But Joe Edwards' goal late in the half will have given Argyle hope.

While Jay Stansfield's t-shirt will have pleased one side of Devon, it may well galvanise the team popular on the other side of the county for the second half.

Leicester v Rotherham match actionImage source, Rex Features
    • League leaders Leicester being held against bottom of the table Rotherham after third-placed Leeds demolished second-placed Ipswich 4-0 in early kick-off
    • Fourth-placed Southampton leading QPR at the break while West Brom trail Middlesbrough 1-0
    • Sheffield Wednesday lead Cardiff City thanks to Anthony Musaba; Birmingham 2-1 up away at Plymouth in first half marred after Jay Stansfield and Lee Buchanan collided with the latter being stretchered off and taken to hospital
    • Adam Wharton gives Blackburn the lead against Watford after just four minutes at Ewood Park; Norwich goalless at home to Huddersfield
    • Coventry ahead at Sunderland where Jude Bellingham is in attendance watching his brother Jobe; Steven Schumacher's first game in charge of Stoke City also goalless in tame first half against Millwall
  7. 'Sunderland are worse'published at 15:55 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    HT: Sunderland 0-1 Coventry

    Gary Bennett
Ex-Sunderland defender on BBC Radio Newcastle

I get a feeling looking at this first 45 minutes that Sunderland are worse than they have been.

They are just looking at Clarke and Roberts to do something, but they don't have the support.

  8. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:54 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Sheff Wed 1-0 Cardiff

It's shaping up to be a merry Christmas for Sheffield Wednesday fans.

Their side are going to end the day in the bottom three but they're set fair for a fourth win in six as they look to pull off the great escape.

Incidentally, I assume The Great Escape will be on TV at some point this yuletide.

  9. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Plymouth 1-2 Birmingham

A first half packed with incidents comes to an end.

Lee Buchanan was stretchered off and taken to hospital after colliding with Birmingham team-mate Jay Stansfield who got himself booked for his celebrations after scoring Blues opener.

Jordan James doubled Blues' lead before Joe Edwards pulled a goal back for Plymouth just before the half-time whistle.

  10. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:52 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Sunderland 0-1 Coventry

Chances at both ends, but the River Wear was found, not the back of the net when Abdoullah Ba really should have scored in this half's best opportunity.

A bit of a weird, non-event of a chance changed things just before the break though when Sunderland ignored the old adage of 'play to the whistle.'

Callum O'Hare played to the whistle after a foul on Haji Wright was not given, O'Hare crossing for the Japanese international Tatsuhiro Sakamoto to open the scoring.

  11. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:51 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Blackburn 1-0 Watford

Adam Wharton's third-minute strike is all that separates Blackburn and Watford at the break.

Work to do for the visitors.

  12. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:51 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Stoke 0-0 Millwall

First 45 done at the bet365 Stadium.

Steven Schumacher's first game in charge of Stoke is shaping up to be pretty dull after a half of few chances to either side against Millwall.

  13. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:50 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    QPR 0-1 Southampton

A chip from the halfway line from Ilias Chair provided a heart-in-mouth moment for the Saints and Gavin Bazunu particularly.

There has been plenty of action in this first-half but few clear-cut chances.

The first big chance of course was taken by the Saints who love scoring-their 38th goal of the season.

Adam Armstrong headed on a corner to Taylor Harwood-Bellis for the former Manchester City player's first goal in two months.

  14. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:49 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Norwich 0-0 Huddersfield

Not a huge amount going on in this one.

Chris Maxwell with a fine save to keep out Ashley Barnes' header for the home side is probably the brightest moment of the game thus far.

  15. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:49 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

Most of this half's chances involved Isaiah Jones, but the best was Darnell Furlong's header superbly saved by Tom Glover, until...

Daniel Barlaser slid in Lukas Engel, really nice play down the left to then assist Morgan Rogers on the penalty spot who sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Mid-table Middlesbrough leading play-off positioned West Bromich Albion.

  16. 'Entertaining first half'published at 15:48 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Plymouth 1-2 Birmingham City

    Brent Pilnick
    BBC Sport at Home Park

This has been such an entertaining first half of football.

Argyle have struggled to cope with Birmingham's physicality for much of the game and could be far further behind.

But that goal by Joe Edwards - pouncing on Dion Sanderson's error - has set Home Park rocking.

  17. HALF-TIMEpublished at 15:47 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Leicester 0-0 Rotherham

    Coupon buster?

Bottom of the table Rotherham, without an away win this year never mind season, are holding the league leaders at the break.

  18. goal

GOAL: Sunderland 0-1 Coventrypublished at 15:47 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Tatsuhiro Sakamoto (45+1 mins)

Callum O'Hare plays to the whistle after a foul on Haji Wright was not given, O'Hare then crosses for the Japanese international Tatsuhiro Sakamoto to open the scoring.

Not a great first half for new Sunderland boss Michael Beale.

  19. goal

GOAL: Plymouth 1-2 Birminghampublished at 15:46 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Joe Edwards (43 mins)

It might not be the most stylish of goals but Plymouth won't care.

Joe Edwards picks up the ball, does well to beat Dion Sanderson who fails to clear the ball away and then pokes home past Birmingham keeper John Ruddy.

Perfectly timed right before the break, too.

  20. goal

GOAL: QPR 0-1 Southamptonpublished at 15:44 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2023

    Taylor Harwood-Bellis (44 mins)

38th goal of the season for the Saints.

Adam Armstrong heads on a free-kick to Taylor Harwood-Bellis for the former Manchester City player's first goal in two months.
