  7. 'We were in the game throughout'published at 20:11 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2023

    FT: Brentford 0-1 Arsenal

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank speaking to Match of the Day: "It’s tough. The players are devastated, I praised them for a good performance. We did so many good things again, it’s the story of these first 13 games. I think we have deserved more points than we have got, and the same again today.

"We were completely in the game, look at Arsenal with the players they have the budget they have, so it is incredible we played a completely even game with two chances each side, and unfortunately they scored theirs.

"We have a good squad but not as big as other teams, no complaints from here but it hurts a little bit with the injuries we have.

"With the players we had today, we could easily have had a point. We did a top job to keep two of the best wingers in the game quiet throughout the game, one top action from Saka, great movement from Havertz and unfortunately they score."

    Arsenal

Arsenal matchwinner Kai Havertz, speaking to MOTD: "These late winners are nice and then to celebrate in front of the fans it was a good feeling for sure.

"The cross was amazing and I thought maybe why not do this run and the ball was perfect and I scored."

On facing Brentford: "We knew before it was going to be hard especially here and they made it hard for us. Brentford had one or two good chances, but the game was in our hands and we played well and deserved to win I think."

On coming back from international duty: "Of course it is hard. There is lots of games and travel, for me I am lucky all I have to do is travel to Germany. The South American players [travel far] and Takehiro Tomiyasu goes to Japan.

"It is very crazy and we have to hope they [international players] do not get injured but for me it is easy compared to them."

On there being no more international fixtures this year: "You know it is a very important period over Christmas you have lots of games. We have to focus for sure and be 100% on Arsenal games."

On his goal giving him momentum: "I hope so, we will see."

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "When you have an opportunity to take a bite out of everybody you have to do it. I was really curious how the team was going to do. Winter has started, it was very cold and it is difficult coming to Brentford and I loved the way the team competed, how we played. How much we wanted it and we deserved to win the game."

On Kai Havertz: "That is the beautiful thing about life. When you have challenges and you have to overcome them, it makes the moments much more. That is the reason the people reacted to him like that today. It is because he is adorable and he is a joy to work with and he fully deserves more than anybody to get that win."

On Aaron Ramsdale's performance: "I am really happy with the team and the way the team played and we kept the clean sheet."

On a title bid: "I love winning and we are top of the table and this is where we have to want to be. For me as well it was a special day - 200 games and I want to say thank you so much to everybody that makes my job so enjoyable."

Serious points takeaway points: 1) Arsenal haven’t played badly, Brentford are a formidable team to breakdown and deserve a lot of respect. 2) Arteta has 1000% destroyed Ramsdale. 3) Havertz is a beauty and just needs to show more confidence 4) WE’RE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to MOTD: "So happy with the way we competed, the way we played and kept going. I think we deserved to win the game. Compliments to their players as it is a hard place to come.

"So happy with the performance of the team and we kept the clean sheet. Delighted!"

On Aaron Ramsdale: "Every player wants to improve. He [Ramsdale] is not any different. They [players] want their best for the team not the manager with their contribution."

On Kai Havertz: "I do not know anybody who is not happy for him. He fully deserves it. He is a tremendous football player. He was the right player and won the game for us."

On the assist: "The big players have to produce magic moments and it was a great delivery. We got the timing and execution right."

On their performance: "I think we were at our best today you cannot have a fluid game here you have to play their game.

"We are in good position at the top of the league. We can enjoy tonight and then we have the Champions League."

1st half was a nervous Ramsdale and second half was the typical Ramsdale. I still don't understand the decision of Arteta to bring Raya. I never feel comfortable when he is at the goal particularly in set pieces. With Ramsdale you feel a sense of calm.

This is the day that Kai Havertz truly kicks on! Stepped up when it mattered in a game we were struggling in and scored the winner. Happy for the guy. Gets so much stick and today he’s done it for us. Got himself in there at back post where many wouldn’t have.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank speaking to TNT Sport: "That’s the tough one in this beautiful game that we lose a game where get so many things right. It should have been a draw.

"We managed to keep them very quiet throughout the game, then Saka has one fantastic moment, a fantastic cross that decides the game. Either team could have won, it could easily have been us.

"This was another good performance from us, we need to keep building on it but it is tough to lose in the last moments of a game we could easily have won."

Oliver: Ramsdale must return as number 1. The stability of last season must be restored.

James: Kai Havertz should play centrally for Arsenal going forward. Any other position is a waste of his talent.
