Willian scored an injury-time winner from the penalty spot as Wolves were on the wrong end of more video assistant referee controversy in their Premier League defeat at Fulham.

With the score at 2-2 referee Michael Salisbury awarded the match's third penalty after a VAR review.

Salisbury had initially waved play on after Harry Wilson and Joao Gomes came together in the box, but overturned his call after the VAR advised him to look at the pitchside monitor. Willian then dispatched his second spot-kick of the half.

Alex Iwobi had opened the scoring in the seventh minute for the hosts, side-footing Antonee Robinson's cutback through the legs of Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Matheus Cunha equalised for the visitors after 22 minutes, heading in Jean-Ricner Bellegarde's cross after the Frenchman skilfully beat Robinson down the right.

Willian restored Fulham's lead with the first penalty of the game just before the hour mark after Nelson Semedo had caught Tom Cairney on the edge of the box.

But Wolves soon had a spot-kick of their own inside the final 20 minutes when Tim Reem bundled over Hwang Hee-chan and the South Korea winger struck Wolves' second equaliser from 12 yards.

Fulham rode their luck and benefitted from another late penalty call to sneak all three points.

Anon: 'Honest Wolves should have got a point' you can have my headline.

K.N.: Are the Premier League trying to eliminate the founding clubs of The Football League from the Premier League? 10 points off Everton in one fell swoop and now is it 7 or 9 points deducted from Wolves so far this season by way of dodgy var decisions. How many times are the PGMOL going to apologise to Wolves after the damage has been done?

  4. 'Maybe tonight has finally turned me against VAR'published at 22:55 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2023

    FT: Fulham 3-2 Wolves

    Wolves

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil speaking to Sky Sports after the loss to Fulham: "We have discussed a lot of decisions. Vinicius should have been off for headbutting Max [Kilman]. Tim Ream should have been sent off for a second bookable offence on the penalty. They are my opinions.

"Nelson [Semedo] plays the ball and doesn't touch Tom Cairney. The referee says he felt that was wrong and he should have been sent to the monitor. That doesn't help me. So that one has been pretty much admitted that it was a mistake. The Harry Wilson one we disagree. I feel it was soft. For all four decisions to go against us is tough to take and we didn't deserve that.

"[It's] bad luck that it keeps going against us. But yeah, there are bad refereeing decisions in there, I have had a good grown-up conversation with him [the referee]. I am not angry with people, it's like 'Come on guys, there's six or seven that have gone against us'. This is a big club. The impact that you are having on my reputation, and the club and people's livelihoods is massive. We should be able to talk about the game and not decisions but unfortunately, we can't.

"I have two options. We keep behaving as we should and respect the decisions and tell the players to do the same or we start saying this isn't working for us and making some noise. I'd rather be a decent human being and be honest, but it can't keep going against us. In the second half I think we should have done better as a team and in the first, I think we had some good control and decent chances. Incredible backing from the fans, great effort from the players and unfortunately it's gone against us.

"I think it is a really complex [issue]. I have always been for VAR but I think it is causing problems at the moment. I think VAR has cost us there. The fact that one is deemed an obvious error and one is not is [baffling]. Maybe with just a human referee one of the penalties may have gone against us, but the fact that we have conceded two, for me VAR is not helping with subjective decisions. Maybe tonight has finally turned me against VAR."

    Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva speaking to Sky Sports after the win over Wolves: "Really important for us. We wanted to see a reaction from the back-to-back defeats, that was tough and something we aren't used to happening and was the first time this season.

"We wanted to minimise the errors because if we're doing the right things, the gameplan, the strategy then we're a tough team to play against. We started the game really well and that's the Fulham I really want to see - the quality, the intensity.

"We showed very good spirit, a winning spirit to score for 2-1 and then for 3-2. It was a close game, we were trying to win the game more than Wolves. It was a good game overall and we deserved the three points."

On the penalties awarded: "Three penalties, two for us, one for them. The second [Fulham] one is a clear penalty. The first for us and the one for them were a bit more soft.

"I hope [VAR] can always make the right decisions because it's their job."

It's getting to the stage now where players are playing for penalties instead of creating genuine goal scoring opportunities. Killing the game.

Huge tip of the hat to Max Kilman for not making more of the Vinicius 'nosebutt'. Had he have done though...

  10. 'I think it was a penalty'published at 22:20 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2023

    FT: Fulham 3-2 Wolves

    Fulham

Fulham captain Tom Cairney speaking to Sky Sports about the first penalty given for Nelson Semedo's foul on him: "I was controlling it quick and I got there and I have moved the ball and he has hit my ankle. At that pace it takes you down and I think it was a penalty."

How big was the win? "The gameplan was to play well from 0-0, we always play well from behind. The first goal was key, we've gone behind far too often so to go 1-0 up gives you that little energy and extra legs.

"The win was massive, They brought it back twice. They are a good team and they brought it back but I felt we had an extra bit tonight."

On whether he is going to be pushing to start regularly: "This is football, you have to stay professional and bide your time and that's what I am going to do."

Jonny: Are Wolves the most hard-done-by team in the premier league? Two penalties given against them which never should have stood, sandwiching Vinicius somehow escaping a red for violent conduct. Madness. VAR is ruining football.

Anders: Three very soft penalties, but none of them clear and obvious errors, so refs decision should have stood. Vinicius on the other hand, should have been sent off. Unreal.

    Fulham 3-2 Wolves

A five-goal thriller no-one saw coming. Fulham went ahead through Alex Iwobi, Matheus Cunha equalised with a header and it was 1-1 at the break.

But it is a VAR dominated second half. Willian converted a dubious penalty, Hwang Hee-chan did likewise at the other end with a more clear-cut decision.

But, with Fulham's Carlos Vinicius extremely lucky to not be sent off, the hosts got a second penalty in injury time and Willian won it for Fulham.
