Newcastle's match at Paris St-Germain will be the "defining moment" of the Magpies' Champions League campaign, according to manager Eddie Howe.

His side must avoid defeat in the French capital to have any chance of reaching the last 16.

After consecutive losses to Borussia Dortmund the Premier League club are bottom of Group F in their first Champions League campaign for 20 years.

"We will need every ounce of energy to get a result," said Howe.

"This is a defining moment in our Champions League campaign, we are going to give it everything. It is imperative we don't lose."

Howe's side had looked well placed to qualify when they thrashed PSG 4-1 in their second Group F match at St James' Park in early October.

But injuries have since affected their form with two losses to Dortmund leaving them heading towards European elimination.

Newcastle did return to winning ways in the Premier League with a 4-1 victory over Chelsea on Saturday.

  2. Avoiding red cards key to Celtic hopes - Rodgerspublished at 20:58 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2023

Celtic must keep 11 players on the pitch if they are to have any chance of taking their Champions League hopes to the final game of the group stage, says manager Brendan Rodgers.

The Scottish Premiership side were reduced to nine men against Feyenoord and 10 against Atletico Madrid in damaging away defeats. That, combined with a late home loss to Lazio and a draw with the Spaniards, has left them in a precarious position.

Celtic face the Italians on Tuesday and know that anything other than a win will not only end their Champions League ambitions but also arithmetically end their interest in European football for the entire campaign.

"We're under no illusions about what we need to do," Rodgers said after arriving in Rome on Monday evening.

"We learned that, over the course of the competition, when we are 11 v 11, we can really compete. In the two away games, we have been down to nine men and 10 men and, at this level, that's a big ask.

"So it will be about keeping our players on the field and playing to the level that we can - and that we have shown - and hopefully getting the breaks in the game.

"I'm excited by it and I'm really looking forward to seeing us play tomorrow. I really think we can get the result we want, but we will have to work really, really hard."

Manchester United, Newcastle and Celtic face a crucial week in the Champions League as they look to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.

All three could be knocked out in the penultimate round of group fixtures if results go against them.

But Arsenal will book their spot in the last 16 if they avoid defeat against Lens on Wednesday - and could even qualify before kick-off if Sevilla beat PSV Eindhoven in the earlier kick-off.

Holders Manchester City have already qualified alongside RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Real Sociedad.

The top two teams in each of the eight groups advance to the knockouts, with third place dropping into the Europa League.

So which clubs are almost there? And who needs a miracle? BBC Sport gives you the lowdown on all the Champions League group stage permutations, which you can read here.

It's a European week so let's have a quick look at who is in action on Tuesday.

That's the half. And a very enjoyable half it was too.

Alex Iwobi struck after only seven minutes from the hosts, Hwang Hee-chan then hit the crossbar for Wolves, who equalised soon afterwards with Matheus Cunha's close-range header after good work from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey gets his keeper out of trouble. A pressing Mario Lemina puts Bernd Leno under pressure and Lemina is faced with a tight angle, but Bassey is covering well to stop Matt Doherty from shooting at an unguarded goal.

Not sure if there is a "Surprisingly Brilliant Match of the Year" award but I think this deserves a nod.

Great defending at one end is followed by great defending at the other. Timothy Castagne does brilliantly a few yards from his own goal to cut out Toti's cross with Matheus Cunha waiting to pounce from close range for what would've been his second goal of the night.

Fulham's Willian looks dangerous in the Wolves penalty area, but some excellent covering from Nelson Semedo stops the Brazilian getting a shot away when he would have only had Jose Sa to beat.

Joao Gomes gets a booking for Wolves with a lazy challenge, standing on the foot of Willian, and it's a costly one too as the Wolves midfielder is now going to be suspended for the match against Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday.

Lovely goal. They have been growing into the game and had struck the bar. Bellegarde with the cross, perfectly headed in by Cunha, 1-1.

Matheus Cunha has scored his third goal in the Premier League this season and that's now a dozen league games in a row that Wolves have scored in.

Two goals in the opening 22 minutes. Great persistence down the right flank from Wolves' Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and he gets to the byeline and stands up a lovely cross.

Matheus Cunha is there in the right place at the right time and is able to head home from six yards out at the back post.

Inches away from a leveller. Lovely ball from Lemina, good strike from Hwang over Leno but it struck the bar. Fulham went close to doubling their lead just before that.

  19. HITS THE WOODWORK - Hwang Hee-chan (Wolves)published at 14 mins

    Fulham 1-0 Wolves

You could be forgiven for thinking this might not have been that good tonight, but it is a great match so far.

Hwang Hee-chan thinks he has scored an equaliser, only to be denied by the crossbar. He chases on to a ball forwards, has the pace to stay ahead of Calvin Bassey and unleashes a powerful strike at goal from 20 yards out.

I don't think Leno got a touch, but the bar comes to Fulham's rescue.
