Well, the magic of the Cup threatened to make an appearance but, ultimately, Charlton ensured the rabbit very much stayed in its hat.

Nonetheless, Cray Valley Paper Mills can hold their heads high after matching their League One opponents for a game and a half.

The Addicks' superior quality and fitness told in the end but it was a fun ride while it lasted.

We hope you've enjoyed our live text coverage - it's only a couple of weeks until round two so we'll see you for that on the first weekend of December.

Charlton manager Michael Appleton on MOTD Live:

"There was a lot of talk about team selection after the first game, but the reality is I found out a lot about some of the young players in that first game, how they deal with that kind of pressure, that anxiety.

"We were fortunate that we had the opportunity to try and put that right, opportunities for some of the senior players to come in, and I thought the approach and attitude was top drawer.

"Sometimes it can be a good thing, sometimes you need criticism."

  3. 'I couldn't be prouder'published at 21:55 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2023

Cray Valley manager Steve McKimm on MOTD Live: "I'm ever so proud of them.

"We told them to turn them for the first 10-15 minutes in the second half and we started to try and play out.

"And if I can be critical, that's what hurt us. They made some changes and they played some top players tonight and they taught us a lesson.

"If my players aspire to be professional footballers, they have to get to that level and I thought Charlton were superb, they took their chances.

"But I couldn't be more proud of this group of players.

"They've had a great run, we've earnt this club so much money, hopefully now they can get stuff done to the ground and we focus now on the FA Trophy and the league."

    FT: Cray Valley 1-6 Charlton

Charlton's Alfie May on MOTD Live: "I think we were very professional tonight.

"For me coming from this background, knowing what the pitch was like.

"It was a little bit different from the Valley, but we came here to do a job, to get out of here and get into the next round and that was the important thing to do.

"Cray have given us a real run and credit to them."

  6. Second-round drawpublished at 21:45 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2023

Cray Valley's exit means just nine non-league sides remain in this year's competition.

Ramsgate, Aldershot, Alfreton, York, Chesterfield, Eastleigh, Maidstone, Barnet and Yeovil all face EFL opposition in the second round proper.

Will any of those names appear in the sacrosanct third-round hat?

Here's the draw for the second round.

They deserve so much applause for what they've done.

To take Charlton to a replay was phenomenal.

They've been in this tournament since August, it's tremendous.

It's great for the club financially, some of the players have had a chance to have a wider audience to see their talents and they'll remember this for a long, long time.

Well, for 45 minutes it seemed we might have another FA Cup fairytale on our hands.

But Charlton produced a thoroughly professional second half to snuff out the hosts' hopes.

Alfie May was the star of the show with two goals - but those of a Cray Valley persuasion will never forget Kyrell Lisbie's first-half penalty, and neither will he.

That's a brilliant run in behind, really good.

It's another long ball over the top, it's not been a night for little passes on the floor.

Deep run from midfield, Freeman with the save and then the follow-up from Mbick.

A great moment for the youngster coming off the bench.

    Micah Mbick

Almost a replica of Charlton's opener.

This time Scott Fraser receives a ball over the top and controls it beautifully but, unlike Alfie May, he's denied by a strong hand from Sam Freeman.

However the ball falls for 17-year-old substitute Micah Mbick, who has only just come on, to tuck into an empty net.

    Triple change for Charlton.

Youngsters Chem Campbell, Micah Mbick and Harvey Kedwell come on.

Alfie May one of those to depart - no hat-trick tonight for the Addicks' top scorer.

We spoke early on about the energy that gets spent.

The first 15 to 20 minutes with the press that Cray Valley had and the energy they put into the game, it's just starting to dwindle.

The set piece goes in and they just don't get out to the ball quick enough.

There's not enough snap in the tackle on the edge of the box and he strokes it home. It's a good finish.

Bit harsh now on the underdogs who are tiring badly.

Lovely feint from Conor McGrandles on the edge of the box from the aforementioned free-kick and he feeds substitute Tyreece Campbell to stroke home Charlton's fifth from about 15 yards.
