  2. 'Netherlands are world class'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

FT: Netherlands 1-0 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny speaking to RTE Sport:

"I think the Netherlands are a world class team, they are one of the top teams in Europe, we've played them twice, there was nothing in the game in Dublin and nothing here, they had a lot of chances and we relied a lot on last ditch defending and Gavin Bazunu to play well in goal. Ireland have never won an away game against a tier one team in history and it's because it's very hard. It's not easy.

"The players played very well for some periods. We want to eradicate the mistakes. We were desperate to win. It's not easy against a good team like Holland. We've rebuilt a team over the last couple of years because it was needed. There's a massive deficit in Irish football.

On whether it will be the end of his reign: "I really don't know, I don't control that. It is quite possible but I don't know. All I can say is that I see the effort tonight and the level of skill and bravery. It wasn't enough, Holland were better than us."

  3. 'I am disappointed but proud of the effort' - Dohertypublished at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

FT: Netherlands 1-0 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland captain Matt Doherty speaking to RTE Sport: "I was proud to lead the lads out but it was a tough game. We left everything we had out there, things just didn't fall for us in the end. Gavin Bazunu had a great game.

"I think we are playing against a top nation and we weren't quite sure how to stop them. It was still a close game, we were right in it until the end. I am disappointed but proud of the effort."

Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper on RTE Sport

The game felt like a testimonial tonight. The pressure was more on the Dutch because we had nothing to play for tonight. It just felt we were going through the motions, it was very flat.

  5. 'One mistake is all it takes' - Bazunupublished at 21:48 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

FT: Netherlands 1-0 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu speaking on RTE Sport:

"It was a disappointing night, I think we stayed in the game well but we failed to create any clear-cut chances and we struggled to test them, I think in the moments we are on top we need to create more.

"The goal was a mix-up and sometimes one mistake is all it takes."

I cannot believe how the game went tonight because this is not the greatest Dutch side that I have seen, by far. Ireland played it slowly, we played wrong passes and made so many mistakes it's unbelievable. It's been a disappointing campaign for the Republic. What next? Who next? The new chapter starts soon.

  7. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:40 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

    Netherlands 1-0 Republic of Ireland

The Republic end their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with a 1-0 defeat against the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

Wout Weghorst's goal was the difference as the Dutch condemned the Republic to their sixth defeat in eight qualifiers.

They had multiple chances to further extend their lead, but were forced to settle for a one goal victory which secures their place in next year's tournament in Germany.

Substitute Adam Idah had a goal disallowed for offside for the Republic.

The Republic's only two victories in this campaign came against lowly Gibraltar and after another disappointing performance, the writing appears to be on the wall for manager Stephen Kenny, whose contract runs out after the New Zealand friendly on Tuesday.

Gavin Bazunu has kept the score down tonight. He's my player of the match. It's worrying when you pick your goalkeeper, he's been picked a few times.

A disappointing outcome from a promising position for the Republic with time running out for them to get back into the game.

The Dutch get down the sides of our centre-backs so easily. Gavin Bazunu has had to keep on his toes. He's made some big saves tonight.

You would have to think this is the end of the road for Stephen Kenny. You win two games and they're both against Gibraltar.

You look back on previous groups and there may be a team or two better than Ireland but they always seemed to give a bit more than this.

With the likes of Greece above us, you would expect something, maybe to beat them at home. You would have to feel that Ireland are looking for another manager but who that is, I have no idea.

Wout Weghorst again holds off Nathan Collins before feeding Cody Gakpo, who races forward before crossing to Denzel Dumfires, who can't connect with the ball to divert it past Bazunu.

What a way to mark his 50th cap that would have been for Dumfries.
