Adam Idah's shot, which deflects off Virgil Van Dijk, squirms under Bart Verbruggen, but the flag goes up for offside as Idah had mistimed his run.

Denzel Dumfries has found more joy on the right hand side in this half and he plays another low, teasing delivery into the box, which Gavin Bazunu does well to turn the ball away with Wout Weghorst poised to get on the end of it.

Evan Ferguson, who was a doubt coming into the game with a back problem, goes off to be replaced by Jamie McGrath.

That will see a reshuffle in terms of formation, with McGrath slotting into midfield to help the Irish try stem the flow of Dutch attacks.

The Netherlands have really increased the tempo in the early stages of this second half.

Tijjani Reijnders, who has never scored for his country, goes close to doing so with his low swerving strike squirming under Gavin Bazunu before hitting the post and bouncing away.

The Republic are struggling to deal with wave after wave of Dutch attacks.

The Netherlands go mightily close to scoring an early second in the second half.

He finds Simons with his low cross, but the RB Leipzig player, on the slide, sees his shot hit Cody Gakpo and deflect away from goal.

In truth they could and probably should have scored more than once after an error strewn Irish display in the first period with Gavin Bazunu forced into a number of saves.

Plenty to work on for Stephen Kenny's side in the second half, but going in only a goal down will be a relief.

Jason Knight loses the ball to Stefan de Vrij and the Dutch break, with Cody Gakpo clipped just outside the box to give the hosts a free-kick in a dangerous position.

Gakpo takes it, and fires it low into the wall, but mistakes are costing the Republic in this game.
