If the art of good management is getting the best out of the resources at your disposal, then Rob Edwards is doing an outstanding job at Kenilworth Road.

Luton have made 'The Kenny' a tough place to go, with Edwards putting together a side that is full of energy and belief as well as skill. Ross Barkley has been rejuvenated while outstanding professional Andros Townsend has been a shrewd acquisition.

The Hatters go into the rest of the season with hope of Premier League survival and the chance to make fools of those of us who predicted a painful demise.

    Current position: 18th

    McNulty's pre-season prediction: 20th

What McNulty said in August: "It is difficult to see Luton surviving but I would take great pleasure in being proved wrong."

Burnley have shown signs of life at times but I feel there has also been a reluctance to adapt to changing circumstances - and leagues - by manager Vincent Kompany.

Sticking by principles is fine but the purist football that got Burnley out of the Championship has also looked lightweight and fraught with danger against top-flight opponents. I thought Burnley might have enough to stay up. I'm not quite as convinced any more.

    Current position: 19th

    McNulty's pre-season prediction: 17th

What McNulty said in August: "There has been lots of talk that the three sides coming up will go straight back down but if one club can defy those predictions, then I am going for Burnley."

  3. Kompany has no regrets over Townsend decisionpublished at 18:48 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January

Luton winger Andros Townsend comes up against the team he almost joined in the summer.

The 32-year-old agreed terms with Burnley after a successful trial but the Clarets withdrew the offer as they did not want to stifle the development of some of their younger players.

Townsend told the BBC the decision saw him break down in tears and he was "rejected by so many clubs" afterwards.

He joined Luton in October and, after impressing, earned a new contract last week.

Clarets boss Vincent Kompany says he has no regrets though.

"We offered him a contract because we had a short-term need that we thought was going to be there," said Kompany.

"But then afterwards when Luca Koleosho came in and he trained for us with us for one week when Wilson Odobert came in, Jacob Bruun Larsen was way fitter than we thought he was going to be.

"I think him having the option to play for Luton is the right option for his career and I explained that to him as well.

"Things always work out for people with his mentality, with the way he works. So he ended up now in a club where hopefully you can still add many years to his career. And I think that was ultimately the goal for him and that's the good thing for him."

This game was meant to be played next Monday but Luton's FA Cup replay saw it moved to today with only five days' notice.

The Football Supporters' Association realised a statement pointing out the inconvenience.

Clarets boss Vincent Kompany: "For us, the players and staff, we have to be ready any time, whether it’s Friday, six in the morning or at midnight, we have to be ready to go at 100%.

“But for the fans, I understand and I can hope the entertainment will be there for them and for our fans the result.”

Burnley don't play again until Wednesday, 31 January when they visit champions Manchester City in the league.

Luton could have three matches before then.

They play Bolton in an FA Cup replay on Tuesday. If they win that they would play Crystal Palace or Everton in round four on the weekend of 27 January.

And then they play Brighton on Tuesday, 30 January in the Premier League.

This is the first game of the Premier League's "winter break", where games are staggered across two weekends - five this weekend and five next weekend.

The theory is that teams will have a week off either before or after.

But seven teams face FA Cup replays in between these two weekends.

    Burnley v Luton (19:45 GMT)

Tonight could be a huge game down at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Burnley and Luton have been tipped for the drop all season and remain in the bottom three.

Luton would move out of the relegation zone with a win tonight though, while Burnley would give themselves renewed hope if they can complete the double over the Hatters.
