Who says this is a dead rubber? Not the Celtic manager or captain.

Brendan Rodgers says he wants his side to perform well for the fans, while Callum McGregor wants his players to prove a point.

There are a few empty rows inside Celtic Park, but the stadium is almost full and the disco lights are up and running.

  11. 'Very disappointing campaign for Celtic'published at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2023

    Celtic v Feyenoord (20:00)

    Ramon Vega
Former Celtic defender on Scottish Football Podcast

It’s very important for Celtic to qualify for the Champions League. But at the same time, if you are in the Champions League, you are going against some very, very big teams with more resources behind them.

From this campaign's point of view and in football terms I was a little bit disappointed, they could've done much better because there are teams in the group they could've handled and may have been able to beat.

It's very disappointing from that point of view because they showed already in the past they can do well, but this year I think they should focus on the league and go again next year.

It's fine having players for the future as long as you also bring in players for the here and now.

You need to strengthen from a position of strength, which Celtic were in.

    Work needs to be done.

    Tom English
BBC Scotland's chief sports writer on Sportsound

It's been a decade of failure in Europe. This goes way beyond this group of players and managers.

There have been a catalogue of teams Celtic have lost against that they should have been more competitive against, from Bodo/Glimt to Maribor.

  16. What shape are Feyenoord in?published at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2023

    Celtic v Feyenoord (20:00)

Since beating Celtic on matchday one, Feyenoord have gone on to win nine and lose five of the following 14 games.

Two of those defeats were to Atletico Madrid, one was at Lazio, and their most recent was a 2-1 loss to league leaders PSV Eindhoven, who sit top of the Dutch top flight with a staggering 15 wins from 15 league matches.

Feyenoord sit second in the Eredivisie, but they can't afford for lose any more ground on PSV, who are 10 points ahead.

    Talking point

    Tino, Celtic Exchange podcast, external

Celtic Park will be busy on Wednesday night, but it certainly won’t be full. That should cause most concern of all to the powers that be at Parkhead.

Sunday’s defeat by Kilmarnock - added to the European exit - has led to apathy among notable sections of the support.

And apathy is far worse than anger or frustration. When people stop caring, that’s when you have a problem.

Yes, the Kilmarnock game was the first defeat in the league campaign so far, but it’s also the second defeat there this term following the League Cup exit in August.

Is that acceptable given the vast difference in resources between both clubs?

Celtic have no right to win every game they play here in Scotland, but we must be expected to beat sides like Killie more often than not.

The debates will rage on about why Celtic are just so inconsistent at this moment in time, but for me it constantly comes back to the failings of the summer transfer window.

We always knew the January window was going to be a crucial one, but the importance has been ramped up with Rangers now inexplicably within touching distance at the top of the table.

After their first league defeat of the season, Arne Slot is anticipating a reaction from Celtic.

The Feyenoord boss said: "Every top club always reacts after a loss and Celtic is a top club and they have very good players, so they will react to that.

"I did see some of the game they played on Sunday, but it’s more interesting to see how they play here against Atletico and Lazio and that was for me impressive.

"They didn’t get what they deserved from those games. They were very unlucky when it came to chances they got and the chances the other teams got."
