Brendan Rodgers came here to do better in Europe, to prove himself in Europe, and to get Celtic back in Europe.

The longer the record of not winning in the Champions League goes on, the heavier it weighs on the players' necks.

They'll be looking to end that and reset.

  2. What about the coefficient & prize money?published at 19:24 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2023

    Celtic v Feyenoord (20:00)

There's also an extra bag of £2m cash sitting there for Celtic if they can win this tonight.

Meanwhile, they can pick up two coefficient points with a victory.

Scotland currently sit 10th in Uefa's chart and every point counts towards keeping them in a decent spot.

  3. Celtic out to end grim runspublished at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2023

    Celtic v Feyenoord (20:00)

A win for Celtic won't move them off the foot of Group E, but it will surely only benefit the squad's mentality if they are able to play at this level again next season.

The Scottish champions haven't won any of their past 15 games in the Champions League - there have only been seven instances of a team going on a longer run without a victory in the competition.

Celtic are also winless in their past 12 home Champions League matches, which is one off the record of 13.

Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers hasn't won his past 10 home matches in the competition - this is the longest run by any manager in Champions League history.

I guess he's right, but here's a few reasons why tonight still kinda matters for Celtic...

    It's been disappointing for Celtic.

It's a night where they are out, on the face of it there is nothing to play for, but they have to put in a performance and get a result to show they should potentially be at this level.

There have been moments where Celtic have looked a good side, but they just haven't been able to get it over the line.

Even though Celtic's European exit has already been confirmed, Brendan Rodgers insists his team will approach tonight's game with desire.

"Our attitude in the game is exactly the same as what’s it’s been," the manager said. "It’s to go and look to win the game and we do that by playing our way.

"I think we showed that once we divert from that we don’t have the same quality and it’s not our strength, our strength is to go and play the game we want to play.

"We want to do everything we can to give the supporters a performance and a result.

"At Celtic, there are no free games, every game is to win and even though we don’t have anything in Europe after Christmas we’re still playing for pride, so whatever team we put out we’re playing for a result."

  9. Free-scoring Gimenez starts for Feyenoordpublished at 19:09 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2023

    Celtic v Feyenoord (20:00)

Feyenoord also include a few big hitters despite the fact they can't move from third spot.

Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez, 22, leads the visitors' attack.

The forward has a staggering 20 goals in 19 games this season.

He missed the match between these two on matchday one, so very much looking forward to watching him this evening.

  10. Welsh & Kyogo return for Celticpublished at 19:06 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2023

    Celtic v Feyenoord (20:00)

Brendan Rodgers still goes fairly strong for this one, making just two changes to the side which started Sunday's disappointing defeat at Kilmarnock.

Nat Phillips drops out of the centre of defence and is replaced by Stephen Welsh, who makes his first appearance since August following a spell out injured.

The final switch sees Kyogo Furuhashi restored to the attack, taking the place of Oh Hyeon-gyu.

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Daizen Maeda have been training but don't feature in the squad, while Liel Abada and Reo Hatate remain out.

Well, this isn't how Celtic imagined it.

Feyenoord visit Parkhead tonight in their final Champions League group game, but the Scottish champions' European hopes are very much dead in the water.

Nevertheless, there's still pride to play for and unwanted records to break, plus there's more cash and coefficient points to earn.

More on that shortly. But first, team news...
