Accrington Stanley's Shaun Whalley has scored against Salford.

Accrington have lost their last three league games on New Year’s Day since beating Chesterfield back in 2013.

Salford have suffered defeat in their two previous EFL games on New Year’s Day, losing to Grimsby Town in 2020 and Bradford in 2023.

    Norwich 0-0 Southampton

Almost 80% of possession for the visitors in the first 15 minutes, but no efforts on goal to trouble Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

The 5-4-1 formation that the home side are deploying is certainly a measure of respect to how Southampton play.

Although it's perhaps not what Canaries fans want to watch.

  3. goal

GOAL: QPR 0-1 Cardiffpublished at 15:18 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

    Dimitrios Goutas (16 mins)

Cardiff had just started to find their feet in this game, winning a couple of corners - and they've scored from the second of those.

It's a fairly straightforward goal, with Dimitrios Goutas getting up at the far post to nod downwards from Joe Ralls' cross and beyond Asmir Begovic.

A fourth goal of the season for the Greek defender and the visitors lead here, against a side who haven't exactly found goals easy to come by all season.

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Coventry

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tom Glover obviously got enough shut-eye despite the New Year's Eve celebrations last night as he gets off his line sharpish to shut down a Coventry move.

Callum O'Hare and Ellis Simms constructed the opportunity but Glover was alert.

    Swansea 0-0 West Brom

Liam Walsh netted the Swans' opening goal in their 2-2 draw against Coventry the other night, but he won't be on the scoresheet today.

Walsh has hobbled off early on with what looked like an ankle injury, so Charlie Patino is on the field for the home side. Fairly even so far.

Charlton have the lead at home to Oxford United, Chem Campbell the scorer.

Oxford lost 3-2 having been two up at home to Derby in their last game, while Charlton have only won two of their past 11 matches.

And Peterborough are already level at Derby - that's two goals in the first nine minutes!

Harrison Burrows replies after Derby's opener came in the first 30 seconds.

Shrewsbury have the lead against Fleetwood, who are under new boss Charlie Adam, thanks to Nohan Kenneh - just the 15th goal Shrewsbury have scored this season.

Reading could go above Exeter out of the relegation spots with a win today, Harvey Knibbs has them one up.

  11. goal

GOAL: Plymouth 0-1 Watfordpublished at 15:12 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

    Edo Kayembe (11 mins)

There are always goals at Home Park!

But it is the visitors who strike first. Excellent work from Matheus Martins from a throw-in as he shows good close control to the get the by-line.

His pull-back is met by the on-rushing Edo Kayembe fires in emphatically.

A nice leaving present from the DR Congo midfielder before he heads off to the Africa Cup of Nations.

    Arnor Sigurdsson (8 mins)

Welcome respite for Blackburn Rovers as Jon Dahl Tomasson's side look to put a four-game losing run behind them against struggling Rotherham.

Sammie Szmodics had a shot which spooned up to Arnor Sigurdsson who shrugged off Dexter Lembikisa and fired past Viktor Johansson.

Blackburn 1-0 Rotherham. Iceland 1-0 Sweden too.

Three goals in League Two before we have one in the Championship 3pm kick-offs.

Forest Green Rovers, seven points from safety, have an early strike this year through Matt Stevens at home to AFC Wimbledon.

Tranmere have won three in a row, have scored 10 in their last four matches and Kieron Morris already has them one up at home to Notts County who are only four points outside the top three after back-to-back wins.

Barrow are still a goal up at Wrexham.

    Stoke 0-0 Ipswich

There is a more familiar feel to the Ipswich line-up this afternoon from the one that drew 0-0 on Friday.

Sam Morsy is back from suspension and Wes Burns and Nathan Broadhead have recovered from illness as part of seven changes from Kieran McKenna.

But goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky is called into action to deal with a Lewis Baker shot.

    Leeds 0-0 Birmingham

Leeds have turned to Kristoffer Klaesson in goal for this one having seen Ilian Meslier suspended.

He's only made one appearance for the Whites since joining from Valerenga in 2021.

    Open start so far.

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Coventry

Middlesbrough almost strike early through Isaiah Jones, who is set away down the left, darts beyond Brad Collins who comes out to the edge of the box, and then fires at goal from an acute angle.

Coventry players scramble back and the ball is hooked off the line and away. Desperate from the Sky Blues.

  17. Postpublished at 15:06 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

    Leicester 0-0 Huddersfield

It's a big day for Tom Cannon as he makes his first start up front for Leicester.

He is one of four changes to the Foxes side from the win at Cardiff. But it's not a bad life when you can bring in players like Ricardo Pereira and Cesare Casadei.

An early goal in the fourth tier too, Kian Spence for Barrow at Wrexham.

Wrexham have scored 37 goals at home this season.

Six points off the top Barrow could go above the Welsh side with a win today.

And Derby County earn the prestigious accolade of the first third tier goal of 2024!

James Collins - get that man a trophy. That's now 10 in his last 12 matches.

They ended last year with a comeback win, and against their promotion rivals Peterborough (they were level on points before today) have scored within a minute.
