  2. 'Wednesday the better team from start to finish'published at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

    FT: Sheffield Wed 3-1 Hull

    Mark Smith
Former Owls defender on BBC Radio Sheffield

Sheffield Wednesday were the better team from start to finish.

The work rate was tremendous, they got the goals at the right time and then saw it off easily. Excellent.

All over at Hillsborough - but only in the sense of tonight's game.

In terms of Wednesday's battle for survival, it's very much game on as they climb above QPR and within three points of Huddersfield in 21st place.

  4. Postpublished at 90+4 mins

    Sheffield Wed 3-1 Hull

Good work by Allahyar Sayyadmanesh, wriggling clear on the left and slipping the ball into the box for Jacob Greaves, but Wednesday manage to get the ball behind for a corner.

Some consolation for Liam Rosenior that his side have kept battling, but their hopes of reclaiming that top six spot are over for tonight.

  5. YELLOW CARDpublished at 90 mins

    Sheffield Wed 3-1 Hull

As well as the straight red card for Tyler Morton in the first half, Hull have also accumulated four bookings.

Regan Slater is the latest to have his name taken after complaining about the award of a free-kick against Allahyar Sayyadmanesh. A frustrating night all round for Slater and the rest of the Tigers contingent and they have another six extra minutes still to negotiate.

It's that stage of the game where Owls boss Danny Rohl can think about resting some of his players and Barry Bannan and Anthony Musaba are both withdrawn.

Mallik Wilks and Tyreeq Bakinson will have a few minutes - plus probably a few more of added time - to make their case.

  7. Postpublished at 83 mins

    Sheffield Wed 3-1 Hull

That was almost a second goal for Djeidi Gassama and a fourth for Wednesday.

Gassama races down the left, pouncing on an error from Cyrus Christie and works his way into the box - but his shot is a lot more manageable for Matt Ingram than the previous one which he bent into the corner.

  8. 'A consolation'published at 18:57 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

    Sheffield Wed 3-1 Hull

    Mark Smith
Former Owls defender on BBC Radio Sheffield

    It's a consolation. It's a cheap penalty.

There are 15 minutes to go, so there will be more chances.

Sheffield Wednesday have won the game now, they've just got to see it out.

    Scott Twine pen

Potentially, a lifeline for Hull - or at least, something to make their hosts slightly tentative in this final quarter of an hour.

There's a bit of juggling by Michael Ihiekwe inside the penalty area and Darren Bond points to the spot.

Scott Twine gives Cameron Dawson no chance, hammering the spot-kick confidently into the net and the Tigers' 10 men have reduced the deficit.

    Sheffield Wed 3-0 Hull

    Mark Smith
Former Owls defender on BBC Radio Sheffield

It’s no more than they’ve deserved.

It's good work again from Marvin Johnson, it then drops for Josh Windass, that’s the person you want it to drop to.

    He fired it in!

As we were saying... a third goal was very much in the offing - and it's Hull-born Josh Windass who provides it.

A cross from the left is half-cleared to Windass, who arrows a skidding half-volley towards the bottom corner and Matt Ingram gets a hand to it but can't keep the ball out.

It's a third brilliant goal scored by the hosts in this second half.

  12. Postpublished at 71 mins

    Sheffield Wed 2-0 Hull

It's all quietened down a bit following that frantic start to the second half, with Hull doing their best to keep possession and give Wednesday something to think about defensively when the opportunity arises.

But the home side are exploiting the extra space to good effect on both sides of the pitch and they'll feel a third goal is very much in the offing. Pol Valentin was the latest to benefit from the additional space just now, but he drags his finish tamely at Matt Ingram.

    Sheffield Wed 2-0 Hull

On the plus side for Hull, they've at least mustered a shot at goal. With that said, it was the kind of attempt you'd label as 'optimistic', with Lewie Coyle firing across goal from a tight angle that was never likely to trouble Cameron Dawson.

  14. Postpublished at 60 mins

    Sheffield Wed 2-0 Hull

As Mark Smith just said, this could easily get worse for Hull.

Wednesday have been swarming forward since the start of this second half and substitute Ashley Fletcher sends a header just over the bar before Liam Palmer's effort is deflected behind.

Palmer has also picked up a booking for pulling back Ozan Tufan, but he won't mind too much about that, with Wednesday not only in the driving seat but bombing along the motorway as well.

  15. 'Matter of time until they get a third'published at 18:37 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

Sheffield Wednesday are really on top now, it's only a matter of time until they get a third goal.

You can hear the reaction from the crowd, it's brilliant.

    What a goal!

We've said about the final decisions, and he's just hit a screamer past the keeper.

    Its a great finish.

    Djeidi Gassama

    What a strike!

That's a first Sheffield Wednesday goal for Djeidi Gassama and what a time to score it, doubling his side's lead against 10 men so quickly after Marvin Johnson's opener.

Johnson was involved again, setting up the the young Frenchman to cut inside and curl sweetly beyond the helpless Matt Ingram into the far corner.

It could have been a penalty, but at least Marvin Johnson kept playing - he fired it in at the near post.

    He's got his rewards.

  19. goal

    Marvin Johnson

There's the breakthrough - and it's a thunderous finish from Marvin Johnson!

The defender rifles a powerful left-foot finish into the Hull net from close range after Wednesday's intricate passing had unlocked the back line.

    Nothing Matt Ingram could do.
