Monday, 15 January, is known as Blue Monday, the most miserable day of the year.

Watford fans at least have something to smile about when they go into work or school tomorrow morning.

The Hornets are the best travellers in the Championship and a hard-earned three points at QPR, courtesy of unlikely hero Jake Livermore's long-range double, ensures they are within a point of the play-off places.

More doom and gloom for QPR and Marti Cifuentes, but if they can keep Sinclair Armstrong, Ilias Chair and Callum Willock fit you'd expect them to pick up points in the run-in. Will it be enough to keep them in the division? Time will tell.

Join us on Friday evening for what is sure to be the next thrilling instalment of action in the world's most unpredictable division, as Hull head to Sunderland.

For now, from all of us, enjoy the rest of your sporting Sunday!

Watford keeper Ben Hamer told Sky Sports: In the first half we didn't create too many opportunities. Second half we got a bit of a foothold and Jake Livermore turns up and scores a belter. He deserved his two goals today.

"It's my job to make saves, to be concentrated and ready for anything.

"We have got to be consistent - the teams above us are stringing results together. We need to try and transfer our away form into our home form."

Watford match-winner Jake Livermore told Sky Sports: "I've been due a couple of goals to be fair. I've been getting a bit of stick from some of the boys for not chipping in with enough goals.

"It was a great save at the end from Ben Hamer. QPR are good side, I think their luck will change.

"It was a great team performance from us. The boys were excellent throughout."

QPR will be licking their wounds after another game which follows a familiar 'what might have been' script.

They remain five points from safety and their eighth league defeat at home is the worst in the division, but there were certainly positives for Marti Cifuentes to build on.

It's been a typically bonkers Championship weekend in another crazy season, but it doesn't matter how you start, it's how you finish which counts.

While the top four will be many people's picks to fill those places come May, Coventry and Watford look upwardly mobile and the fight for fifth and sixth places looks wide open - with at least half-a-dozen major players involved.

It's why we love this division so much...

    It's a hard-fought victory.

Without ever being at their best Watford performed better in the second half.

Two first-class finishes from Jake Livermore did it.

Jake Livermore's fine long-range double in the space of five second-half minutes and Ben Hamer's superb stoppage-time save from Jimmy Dunne ensured Watford pick up their first win of the year and move within a point of the Championship play-off places.

The last time they did the double over the Hoops they won promotion to the Premier League in 2006. If they can take their away form to Vicarage Road who would bet against them repeating the feat 18 years later?

QPR remain second bottom and five points from safety but gave a good account of themselves and might have had more than Lyndon Dykes' late consolation to show for it.

  10. GREAT SAVE!published at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January

    What a save.

Ben Hamer, 36-years-old. He gets down superbly to his right to deny Jimmy Dunne's low curler. How could he see it through that melee? It was hit hard and almost beyond him. Such a strong hand. That's a save which might just have earned three points.

Valerien Ismael looked at the fourth official's board showing seven added minutes as though it bore an insult to a close family member.

Can QPR heap even more woe on him and make it four Watford games without a win or can he make it five wins in six games managing against the Rs?

Asmir Begovic clutches a looping Giorgi Chakvetadze effort on a rare Watford foray forward.

  12. ADDED TIMEpublished at 90 mins

SEVEN added minutes for QPR to try to find a leveller... it's been all Rs the last few minutes.

Paul Smyth's provided another enticing cross from the right flank but no team-mate was able to get on the end of it.

Stuart: Kudos to Watford for turning the game around today and looking like closing in on the play-offs. However, if they managed to get in them and somehow went up, I have no idea how they would get close to surviving. They have fallen a long way now, the gap is vast.

Anon: I've been a Rangers supporter for over 50 years and this is so hard to take..... somehow we need to get a striker who can hit the target... are you watching Mr Nourry?!

Sinclair Armstrong is a big unit but manages to spin on a sixpence before firing a low shot straight at Watford keeper Ben Hamer.

The Rs top-scorer Lyndon Dykes slams home his fifth of the campaign after a defected cross from the right from sub Paul Smyth sailed over Ben Hamer to the far post.

That's a dozen games without a clean sheet for the Hornets, QPR won't care, they want another.
