It's all building up to a thrilling Old Firm festive derby at Celtic Park on Saturday.

  3. Dundee must learn from defeat - Dochertypublished at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Dundee 0-3 Celtic

Tony Docherty says it is important his players learn from their defeat by Celtic.

"When Celtic get their tails up like that it's difficult," the Dundee manager tells Sportsound. "You can see the quality they are bringing on off the bench. It's difficult for players that, you've got to keep that ice about you. You keep the ball and try to work your way up the pitch. That was difficult for some players today. It's important we use it and analyse it.

"This is the reason I came. It's a progressive club. It's difficult playing against the Old Firm, but I think we have shown a level of performance over the season to show we are up for the demands of the Scottish Premiership. It is important we bounce back from today. It's difficult for the players but they've shown us a real consistent level of performance this season."

  4. Docherty looking for 'positive reaction'published at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Dundee 0-3 Celtic

Dundee manager Tony Docherty tells BBC Scotland: "I was happy with the first-half performance. I came in at half time bemoaning that our ball retention could have been better, but our defensive structure was very good and I stressed to the players - as we are an honest group - that the first 10 minutes against the Old Firm it is really vital that you stay in shape and don't lose your discipline. And I just felt a couple times that they made those runs down the side and we succumbed to that.

"That won't define our season, our reaction to it will define our season. Our previous history, when we lost to Rangers here, and lost our 'run', our reaction was really positive to that. I'll be looking for the same from the players and I think they have the character to do that."

  5. Rodgers hails Johnston impactpublished at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Dundee 0-3 Celtic

Mikey Johnston's two goals at Dens Park will aid the winger's bid to earn a new contract beyond the summer.

Asked about the Celtic youth product's substitute performance, manager Brendan Rodgers tells BBC Sportsound: "I think it's what he does really well and has done that a number times for us this season coming into the game.

"The challenge for Mikey was when he was playing consistently. He's very rarely had four, five games on the spin. I certainly know he's a player who can come off the bench and play well."

As for whether the 24-year-old has played his way into his thoughts for a start against Rangers on Saturday, Rodgers replies: "If he did, I wouldn't be telling you!"

  6. Carter-Vickers 'felt hamstring'published at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Dundee 0-3 Celtic

Brendan Rodgers appears hopeful that Cameron Carter-Vickers will recover in time for Saturday's Old Firm derby after the centre-half was taken off at Dens Park.

"He felt his hamstring," the Celtic manager reveals. "Thankfully, it looks like it hasn't gone. It's just tight.

"If he feels anything, it's better letting us know. Stephen [Welsh] came on and was very calm and excellent. We'll assess him before Saturday."

  7. Rodgers delight at second-half patiencepublished at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Dundee 0-3 Celtic

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells Sky Sports: "The attitude and mentality in the game was very good. When you come here on Christmas night and you come away from your family... from the first whistle the mentality was fantastic.

"We could've been in front by half-time and anything Dundee had was us being loose. Overall, the performance, we created many opportunities and kept the clean sheet. The attitude and energy was very good.

"The team have had some harsh lessons in the last few weeks. It's a young group of players. Paolo Bernardo getting his first goal, Mikey Johnston affecting the game, but overall our structure was good. The pitch was tricky, but how we passed and speed was excellent. We got into good areas but couldn't be decisive enough at times. Overall, I'm so happy because they thoroughly deserved that.

"We said at half time, we arrived into the areas we wanted to and, instead of making extra pass, we were looking to get shot off and finish move too quick. Second half we showed patience."

  8. Who would replace Carter-Vickers?published at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

Carter-Vickers is huge. Not just his defensive qualities but on the ball too. He can start attacks, he's got pace and he's strong.

Are they vulnerable from set-pieces? It's something Rangers might capitalise on. So it will be interesting to see if he's not going to make it, will it be Welsh or Nawrocki that come in?

  9. Carter-Vickers concern?published at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Dundee 0-3 Celtic

The big worry for Celtic will be the withdrawal of key centre-half Cameron Carter-Vickers.

We'll have manager Brendan Rodgers on that shortly.

  10. Celtic ready for derby - McGregorpublished at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Dundee 0-3 Celtic

Celtic captain Callum McGregor says "everyone will be ready" for Saturday's Old Firm derby after beating Dundee.

"It's a big game - we want them in front of our home crowd," he tells Sky Sports.

As for Dundee, the midfielder says: "We know they're going to play the low block. The longer the game stays 0-0, it suits them. In the second half, we were patient, stuck to it and got our rewards in the end.

"That's what teams try and do - frustrate us and force us outside. That patience is always key. We have to keep attacking the same way.

"It was a lot slicker. Even the other day, we were excellent for 30 minutes. It's about getting the confidence, get the boys feeling good and getting the ball in the back of the net."

    Kenny Miller
Former Celtic and Dundee striker on BBC Sportsound

It was all down to the way Celtic pin you in. I was just a wee bit disappointed, before that second goal, they didn't make a change to have a go. It was always going to come and Celtic made them pay in the second half. A comfortable win in the end.

  12. Never in doubt after first goalpublished at 17:06 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

    FT: Dundee 0-3 Celtic

    Pat Bonner
Former Celtic goalkeeper on BBC Sportsound

I think it was a dominating performance and they controlled the game. I don't think Dundee tested Joe Hart in the Celtic goal at all.

It was all about if Celtic could break this team down and eventually it came. It was a lucky break. You would expect the goalkeeper to do better. But, when Celtic got the second goal, the game was never in doubt in any way, shape or form.

The two goals from Mikey Johnston - who came off the bench and made an impact, which is what you want from your subs. I was delighted to see the young man score some goals and build up his confidence. He needed that.

That will give him huge confidence because that was the missing part of his game - that final product.

Could this be the making of Mikey Johnston? It's an interception that falls into Johnston's pass, but he composes himself and feeds it into the far corner.

It's been a mauling all afternoon, in truth.

    A quickfire double!

Dundee's resistance is crumbling as Celtic pile on the pressure and Mikey Johnston shows good feet as he drifts inside from the wing and fires low past Trevor Carson, with the goalkeeper having no chance on this occasion.

After a four-year wait for his next Celtic goal, Johnston has two within a few minutes.

    It's all happening still.

Trevor Carson does well to prevent Mikey Johnston scoring a second, the ball strikes Joe Shaughnessy on the arm, but the ball had already struck the Dundee centre-half's arm and there's no spot kick.
