Chelsea come forward early in the second half and whip in a cross from the left.

The ball dips and Matt Clarke's head must have been no more than a couple of inches off the ground as he heads it away!

Steve: Too nice from Boro. No passion or desire and they've let Chelsea off the hook big time. Feel for those Boro fans as that's a long way down and an even longer drive home.

The second half is under way and both sides have made changes at the break.

Barring the most miraculous of comebacks, it looks like Middlesbrough's impressive run in the Carabao Cup is coming to an end.

But they will want to give the travelling fans something to cheer and avoid this getting embarrassing in the second half.

On the other side of it, how ruthless are Chelsea feeling?

James: I am a spoiled Boro fan who saw the great teams and successes of the 90s and 00s, but I wanted a little bit more tonight.

Anon: Absolutely stupid football from Boro. Been the architects of own downfall. Trying to play out from back has been stupid.

Jamie: It’s the hope that kills you. The night at the Riverside and the first five minutes tonight were worth it…just

To be fair to Ryan, that message was sent before kick-off.

It's only 45 minutes against a team a division below them but Chelsea did look impressive in that half.

Enough to suggest progress is being made?

It might sound weird but I almost want Chelsea to lose as I don’t see any progression under Poch. He’s taking it very very slowly, but with Liverpool, City, Arsenal racing away there’s no time to waste on inconsistent results.

  8. 'Chelsea are getting off the ground'published at 20:51 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

HT: Chelsea 4-0 Middlesbrough (Agg: 4-1)

    Stewart Downing
Former Middlesbrough and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

This has been the Chelsea team that came to play tonight. They have come with a different mindset.

They know there is a big day out at Chelsea.

They know what is at stake and they know they have the whole world to prove wrong. They have spent a lot of money and it is starting to look like it is money well spent, this project.

It looks like it is starting to get off the ground.

  9. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:49 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    Chelsea 4-0 Middlesbrough (Agg: 4-1)

Middlesbrough get it clear but that has been a bruising first half for Michael Carrick's side.

After a slow start, Chelsea have clicked into gear and goals from Enzo Fernandez, Axel Disasi and Cole Palmer, plus a Jonny Howson own goal, are surely sending them to Wembley.

This has been embarrassing and pathetic by Boro. What was the point of them even going on the pitch, when they haven't turned up at all. Thanks for ruining hope and dreams. Should be ashamed.

Clive, Boro fan for 50 years

  12. INJURY TIMEpublished at 45 mins

    Chelsea 4-0 Middlesbrough (Agg: 4-1)

Those first few minutes with Chelsea looking sloppy and Middlesbrough on top seem a long time ago now.

We're into two minutes of added time at the end of the first half.

Richard: Most clinical movement and finish I've seen from a Chelsea player since Oliver Giroud. And it was from a CB playing at RB. Maybe Disasi should start up front next game. Honestly couldn't make us worse.

Adam: Disasi finishing better than all our forwards this season.

  14. 'Too easy for Chelsea'published at 20:44 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    Chelsea 4-0 Middlesbrough (Agg: 4-1)

    Glenn Murray
Former Brighton striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

    Cole Palmer again.

He keeps his cool and rolls it into the net with the quality that we know he has.

Far too easy, from a Middlesbrough point of view and they will be kicking themselves.

That will be the most disappointing thing for Michael Carrick - all of the goals could have been avoided.

GOAL - Chelsea 4-0 Middlesbrough (Agg: 4-1)published at 42 mins

    Cole Palmer

That should do it for Chelsea.

It's a gift from Middlesbrough. Daniel Barlaser is stretching to reach a pass on the edge of his own box and ends up flat on his face as Cole Palmer robs him of possession.

Palmer takes his time before slotting it into the corner.

  18. Postpublished at 40 mins

    Chelsea 3-0 Middlesbrough (Agg: 3-1)

Middlesbrough might look back to that Morgan Rogers chance at 1-0 and wonder what might have been?

As it is, they just need to get to half-time without any further damage being done.

  19. 'Middlesbrough have been cut apart'published at 20:39 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    Chelsea 3-0 Middlesbrough (Agg: 3-1)

    Glenn Murray
Former Brighton striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Chelsea have just undone them. They were slick, they were fast and they picked Middlesbrough apart.

We can see Michael Carrick looking out, looking frustrated. His team have been cut apart in this first half.

    Raheem Sterling has been deadly.

  20. Postpublished at 20:39 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January

    Chelsea 3-0 Middlesbrough (Agg 3-1)

    Alex Howell

That's really good play by Axel Disasi. He nicks the ball, carries on his run and scores. The Chelsea bench celebrate but Pochettino stays calm.
