And a spot more from Southgate on England's injured players: "Harry Kane won't be fit for Tuesday so he will go back to his club.

"With Kyle Walker, we are not sure. He was feeling some tightness and it was something we couldn't take a chance on.

"Cole Palmer and Jordan Henderson trained this morning, but we have to see how they come through that next phase."

More from England manager Gareth Southgate...

On getting the best out of Phil Foden: "I think at moments we saw that.

"We have several players missing so some of the combinations are different. Him and Jude combined well, but again he is playing against a high level side and we are not dominating 75% of the ball which at times is the case with his club."

On the debutants: "I though Ezri Konsa to come on at that moment and deal with Vinicius was excellent, a really mature performance.

"I thought Anthony Gordon had been in an England shirt for a long time. He looked settled with it, a couple of attempts on goal - he took his club form into an England shirt.

"Kobbie Mainoo, it was nice to get him on the pitch and he showed moments of composure and that is evidence what he has been doing with the club."

  6. 'We held our own'published at 21:40 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March

    FT: England 0-1 Brazil

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think with 10 minutes to go we thought we played well here.

"We have seen a lot of players with not a lot of England caps and we have held our own in possession and had attempts on goal.

"But, that one ruthless moment changes the game.

"They have clearly got some fabulous forwards and you have to defend well.

"We had one or two moments we didn't do that and our goalkeeper saved us on occasions.

"We never looked like we were being carved apart and turned over possession a lot, we managed to counter-attack but didn't find the final finish."

Russell: I think England's only shot in the second half came from John Stones. It certainly was tepid up front.

Lucas Paqueta committed six fouls in this match, the most by a Brazil player in a game since July 2021, when Paqueta conceded six against Argentina.

Southgate plays 'dont lose at all cost' football, but forgets goals win tournaments. Englands' natural talent drags them through against 'weaker' teams but collapses against the big boys. Attacking coaches need a reshuffle or rethink. It is dire.

It is a great start for him [new Brazil boss Dorival Jr] but also for Brazil this was the kind of game where you have to show up and take the opportunity.

We were expecting to see Endrick and he came on and did great.

Poor management there. Three centre backs on and expect to create chances? Have to criticise Southgate when we are bringing Dunk on instead of Toney to win it. Southgate has not used his squad well at all there.

Germany must be taking things easy in the second half against France. It took them four minutes after the break to double their lead over the hosts, courtesy of Kai Havertz.

Remember Florian Wirtz put Julian Nagelsmann's side a goal up just seven seconds into this contest.

Around 30 minutes left in this one now.

Meanwhile, Denmark have drawn 0-0 at home with Switzerland. Not a huge amount to be said about that contest really.

Gareth Southgate has just confirmed that captain Harry Kane will return to Germany and Bayern Munich. He won't be fit to play at Wembley against Belgium on Tuesday.

  15. 'Best day of my life'published at 21:21 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March

    FT: England 0-1 Brazil

    England

England debutant Anthony Gordon, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Tonight was the best day of my life.

"I envisioned it a bit different with a win and a goal. I thought we were the better team but we lacked that cutting edge that they had at the end.

"This is my long-term dream I have had. To achieve it means everything to me.

"I haven't just envisioned it in the last couple of years, I have imagined it in the garden [as a kid] recreating Rooney and Gerrard's goals - it's just an amazing moment.

"We have to find a way of killing teams and putting them to the sword when we get the chance."

On what he could do better: "Score! When you come off you think you could have done better.

"The chance in the first half with the volley, if I am being hard on myself, I would have liked to score it."

On the Euros: "You can never truly be in this England squad with the talent around you. I have got so long to go as I haven't showed them what I can do to a full extent."

  16. 'A dream come true'published at 21:19 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March

    FT: England 0-1 Brazil

    England

England debutant Ezri Konsa, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Definitely worth the wait and it's a dream come true - a proud moment.

"I wasn't expecting to come on that early, but I enjoyed every moment of it. I thought we were the better team and dominated the ball, but we couldn't score a goal."

On Brazil: "You see their front four and you see the quality they have got.

"They always have a lot of talent and we saw that tonight."

On the result: "I am sure the other boys don't like losing. It is never a nice feeling and we wanted to win, but we didn't do that.

"It's a mixture of feelings but hopefully I can look back on tonight and see that I have made my debut for England.

"It is crazy if someone told me it years ago I would have said you were lying."

On the Euros: "It is every kid's dream to play in a major tournament, hopefully I make the squad that goes to Germany."

  17. Too early to assess Walker injurypublished at 21:16 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March

    FT: England 0-1 Brazil

    England

More from England manager Gareth Southgate speaking on Channel 4: "We played from the back really well. I am happy with a lot of that performance.

On Ben Chilwell: "He was aggressive in his defending and gave us that width. We have to manage him carefully so him, [Harry] Maguire, Jude [Bellingham], we needed to physically to get them off the pitch so that didn't help the rhythm of the game.

"We don't know yet [on Kyle Walker's injury]. He is feeling something but he is not a player that is injured very often so he is not quite certain what it is so we will have to assess it over the next couple of days."

  18. Postpublished at 21:13 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March

At 17 years and 246 days, Brazil's Endrick is the youngest ever male player to score a senior professional goal at Wembley Stadium for club or country.

  19. 'Ruthless moment decides game'published at 21:12 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March

    FT: England 0-1 Brazil

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking on Channel 4: "There were lots of very good performances. It is a top level game and we have controlled long parts of it. We had as many attempts as them on goal but in the end it is that ruthless moment that decides the game.

"We've had a lot of players go on, a couple of debuts and some really important individual performances for us."

On Anthony Gordon and Ollie Watkins: "Very good. Anthony was excellent both sides of his game. With 15 minutes to go there were lots of changes and I think at the point the crowd were really pleased with the performance. Of course when you lose the game it turns negative but we have to keep the context with that."

Tonight England struggled to create chances and elements of England's play starting from the back they do really nicely and they switch it really well.

But, when they get the ball in wide advanced positions that is where they lack quality.
