  1. 'Pedro has great potential'published at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    FT: Stoke 2-4 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, speaking to BBC MOTD: "We knew before the game it could be a tough because there aren't easy games in this level. I think we deserved to win and we played well for 90 minutes.

"We conceded the first goal after we made two mistakes with two chances to score.

"After that moment I think we played better than Stoke and I'm very happy with the performance.

"Before the game I asked them to play seriously like it's in the Europa League of the Premier League and they did brilliantly.

"Before we conceded the penalty we had three or four chances to score. When we are focused on the game and when we show the right attitude, I'm always confident we will win.

"It's great that we don't have a replay, we are already playing a lot of games."

On Joao Pedro: "We love Joao.

"I think his potential is bigger than he is showing at the moment.

"He can start games better, in the last period he needs 20 minutes to get in the game but he's a great player and has great potential for this club."

It was special moment for Hull’s young Matthew Jacob, with his poacher’s finish on his first start for the club forcing a replay.

Birmingham had looked strong and efficient under the stewardship of interim boss Steve Spooner. He never left the edge of his technical area.

Birmingham scored a splendid first half goal and will take heart after a turbulent week, even if the late Hull goal will sting somewhat.

Luke Williams was only appointed Swansea City head coach yesterday afternoon, and he takes charge of his first game today as Morecambe visit the Swansea.com Stadium.

The former Notts County boss was a part of Russell Martin's coaching staff here, so the Swans are a team he knows well.

Williams will look to re-establish the possession-based style of football which Martin championed during his two years in south Wales, and he will be expected to make a winning start against League Two opposition this evening.

Williams has made 11 changes to the Swansea team that beat West Brom on New Year's Day, with former Wales midfielder Joe Allen captaining the team as he starts a game for the first time since August.

  5. 'I'm delighted with the boys'published at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    FT: Gillingham 0-4 Sheffield United

Gillingham manager Stephen Clemence told BBC Sport: "I'm delighted with the boys. They've given their lot. We had moments at 0-0,. We had to take one of them.

"We probably can do better with their goals. We wouldn't like to concede them in a League Two game.

"It just wouldn't seem to go in for us but we created chances against a Premier League team.

"We're making good progress here. We are starting to create more chances. It'll start happening for us soon.

"Well done to Sheffield United and Chris and his team. Good luck to them in the next round."

  6. 'To get back to that feeling was good'published at 17:17 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January

    FT: Gillingham 0-4 Sheffield United

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder to BBC Sport: "We haven't had many wins this season so to get back to that feeling for the players was good.

"We need to be consistent with our performances no matter which competition. It's different from the Premier League, we had more of the ball.

"Everyone in the media world has turned up today looking at this fixture and thought 'home win, Premier League team getting knocked out'. We had to make sure we did a job on Gillingham and we did that.

"We have some good young players. Andre Brooks was outstanding too. It was the first experience of playing at this level [for some youngsters]. It's fabulous for them they got through it. It's not under-21s football, it's full-on.

"We had to endure some tricky moments. Will [Osula] to get his two goals was great."

On Ben Brereton Diaz: "He wanted to come. That was one of the biggest things for me. I want players to want to come here. It's been a whirlwind week. He's been flying back and forth from Spain. To get him on the pitch was good.

"It's been a very productive afternoon for us."

But they have progressed from their last 18 FA Cup ties against sides from a lower division, since losing 4-2 to Bradford City in 2014-15.

Preston, currently 14th in the Championship, have won just one of their last 15 meetings with Chelsea in all competitions (D5 L9).

That was a 1-0 home win in the second tier in February 1981.

They have lost 17 of their last 18 games against Premier League sides in the FA Cup.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino says the FA Cup is a "really important competition" for his side as they try to qualify for Europe.

The Blues, who host Preston, did not qualify for European competition this season and are currently 10th in the Premier League table.

They last won the FA Cup in 2018.

"Through the FA Cup or Carabao Cup we can achieve that [being in Europe next season]," said Pochettino.

"It's a really important competition for us, because we are not in Europe.

"In the Premier League, we are in a position that we need to grow and improve a lot if we want to be in Europe next season."

Aston Villa lost to Stevenage at this stage of the competition last year

Aston Villa are flying high in the Premier League but Unai Emery has no intention of taking the FA Cup lightly as they look to make amends for last year's early exit.

Villa - who last won the competition back in 1957 - were beaten in the third round by then League Two side Stevenage.

“I won some titles in different cups in France with PSG, and I was asking this morning for some players’ experiences in different cup competitions when they’ve been successful," Emery said.

“We are here trying to build a new way with Aston Villa and the players we have here. We are going to try to do one way in this competition because it’s a very prestigious competition here in England.

“We have to be focused to build and create a strong structure with the players we have, thinking in our mentality about doing something important."

It will not be easy against Championship side Middlesbrough, who are also into the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.

"It’s a big challenge, but it’s a one-off game," said Boro boss Michael Carrick.

"We can give it our best and football is funny at times, it throws up results that maybe shouldn’t happen. We know, on paper, this is one that shouldn’t go our way. But we’ll do our best to try and flip that."
