  2. Foden's increased minutes point to added influencepublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

At 23, it is hard to call Phil Foden a senior statesman - but against Huddersfield on Sunday he was certainly the main man alongside a band of fellow academy graduates that crave to follow in his footsteps.

Foden has been a key part of Pep Guardiola’s squad for almost six years now, but the England midfielder seems to have taken on more responsibility this season in the absence of talismanic players such as Rodri, Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland.

At the halfway point of the season, he has played 1,518 minutes in the Premier League. That is only 300 minutes fewer than in the whole of the 2022-23 campaign, or about three-and-a-half games’ worth.

His record came in 2021-22 - 2,134 minutes - a number he will surely smash through unless Guardiola decides to manage his time on the field as the season moves towards its sharp end.

His goal output in the league is slightly down on the past two campaigns, perhaps a symptom of being regularly deployed on the right wing, a more unfamiliar area albeit to a player that has featured across the entire midfield and forward lines.

However, it is four goals in his past four games in all competitions, with Guardiola noting Foden’s importance after the win at Everton last month, given Haaland’s continued struggles to get fit.

One might expect that number to rise too as Foden is having more shots per game than in any previous season, averaging 2.55 per 90 minutes in the Premier League.

Three assists in his past three Premier League games also speaks to a player whose influence in this City side continues to increase.

With De Bruyne now back, it will be interesting to see if Foden is allowed even more licence to wreak havoc on opposition defences or if his game time gets trimmed.

Whichever way Guardiola opts to utilise these talented playmakers, having their twin threats operating in tandem once more can only spell bad news for City’s rivals.

Get Involved - A good move for Sancho?published at 14:55 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Clearly there's an attitude problem there. The club gave him 2 months off to deal with 'personal issues' and he repaid them by coming back and performing terribly on the pitch, and by the sounds of it, in training. He was then rightfully dropped and rather than dig in and fight for his place in the side, he threw his toys out the pram. Good riddance to him.

    Danny, Manchester

Do the people blaming ETH feel that a track record of turning up late and underperforming is a good way for a professional footballer to behave? The same manager who gave Sancho extended leave to help with his mental health. If this was Pep, we'd all be claiming what a genius he is who doesn't stand for lazy behaviour.

    Luke, Manchester

I cannot believe the sympathy Sancho is getting from some. Ten Hag fully backed him when he allowed him time away from the limelight to get himself right and then when Sancho returns he can't even be professional and show up on time. All the talent in the world but a shocking attitude it seems

  4. Burnley will be a 'very difficult game'published at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Luton Town

On opponents Burnley, Rob Edwards said: "It's a really, really difficult game and we're going to respect them like we respect everyone. If we're not at at our best, we'll lose the game. Unless they're way off it as well and it's just a really awful game.

"We've got to make sure we're at it in the Premier League to get anything from any game.

"They've got good footballers, they're really well coached and it's going to be a very, very difficult game."

  5. 'We love Barkley'published at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Luton Town

On midfielder Ross Barkley, who signed on a free transfer in the summer, Rob Edwards said: "He has been really good. I've got to concentrate on the here and now for Luton and that's what Ross has to do as well.

"I understand the talk [of him making the England squad] because he has played for his country before. It's been a good period, but Ross will be the first to stay he has to keep his consistency and keep playing his football.

"But we certainly love him and what he's doing for this football club is brilliant."

  6. 'We're never going to be able to go out and match other clubs'published at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Luton Town

More from Rob Edwards on transfers: "We've got to look at where we've come from. We can compete and we just do things our way.

"If, and it's a big if, if we can stay at this level and keep competing for a long time, then we'll be in a better position to keep building and growing.

"But this is our first year in the Premier League, we're never going to be able to go out and match other clubs. But that doesn't mean we can't sign good players and we've got other good players in the building as well."

  7. 'The club will continue to grow whatever happens this year'published at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Luton Town

On possible outgoings in the transfer window, Rob Edwards said: "There are always going to be enquiries, that's only natural and it shows we've got good players here.

"There's always going to be a bit of interest but there is nothing that interests us in terms of losing anyone at the moment.

"There is a plan here and we'll stick to that. We'll be backed if there is someone we think can really help us. But there's a level to that. That's fine, that's just what we do."

On plans for the future, Edwards added: "We're in the process of achieving something and that's a long term thing.

"This club will continue to grow whatever happens this year because there is a really good plan with brilliant people running the club. We're not going to be forced into sales or people losing jobs if the worst was to happen and we go down. We'll continue to build and grow and get better."

  8. Morris to return for Hatterspublished at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Luton Town

Luton boss Rob Edwards on team news: "Carlton Morris is in contention to play. He was cramping up a little bit against Bolton, but that's all fine.

"Jacob Brown was suspended anyway for this one. He was feeling his knee before the Bolton game but he'll be fit for our next one.

"Apart from that, excluding Marvelous Nakamba and Tom Lockyer, we've got a decent team to go up there."

  9. 'I want to come out of the window stronger'published at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Luton Town

Giving an injury update, Luton boss Rob Edwards said: "I don't feel under pressure too much. Tom Lockyer and Marvelous Nakamba are out for an indefinite period. Other than that we're in pretty good shape."

On the possibility of transfers, Edwards said: "If we can strengthen and bring in someone who helps us and makes us better then, of course, we'll look at that. Our recruitment team are really good and they're on it.

"We're always looking, but that being said, they've got to be the right person. They've got to fit into what we do, fit into the group and make us better. That's difficult in January.

"I'm not saying it's going to be players in. If it's one, or if we stay as we are, I'd genuinely be happy. But I wouldn't be surprised to see one or two little bits of change.

"It's important to stress that I don't want too much. I do want to come out of the window stronger and I'm sure we will do but keeping a lot of what we've got is really important to me."

  10. Postpublished at 14:36 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    That's all from Vincent Kompany.

Time now to hear from opposition boss Rob Edwards, who has also been speaking to the media this afternoon.

  11. O'Shea 'growing in character and leadership'published at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton Town (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Burnley

On defender Dara O'Shea, Vincent Kopany said: "He's been a strong performer for us, beyond what the obvious would be.

"I think he's also one of the players who is growing in character and leadership. These guys are in the middle phase of young and experienced.

"I am pleased for him but the truth is always tomorrow."

  12. 'They've been exceptional' in trainingpublished at 14:29 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton Town (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Burnley

Speaking about getting the right balance in his squad, Vincent Kopany said: "The squad balance is something we pay a lot of attention to, as there are things we have to be careful with.

"It's good to have it at the beginning, as eventually the team settles and then you make sure everyone gets game time. They've trained today and they’ve been exceptional."

On the mid-season break, Kompany added: "It gives us time. We have a lot of internationals, so we plan to give them as many days [off] as we can, allow at least a week off, and then we're ready to go."

  13. 'I have a team who have a growth mindset'published at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton Town (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Burnley

On the hope of his squad adapting to the Premier League, Vincent Kompany said: "I hope as a manager, that at some point they do. The thing that would make me most nervous is, if you don’t have the right characters.

"The reasons why I kept telling you I enjoy working with this team is because it's genuine. I have a team who have a growth mindset. On top of improvement, you want results. What they are showing now, should turn into results. My belief is that these types of signs do turn into results.

"I think its a mindset. I've seen professionals that are fantastic at adapting, growing and learning. I think for youth it's a necessity, you can't not be coachable not at this level. For older players it’s a strong sign. But it is not to do with age.

"The future will point out if this is a starting point for something. The thing you have to make a distinction with, is that Luton came up with players who haven't played in the Premier League, so what they're doing now is a tremendous sign of progress.

"For us, we largely went down with very few Premier League players, we had to build our squad and bring up a Championship-like team. The goal is to turn the team into a Premier League team as quick as you can. It’s a difficult job."

  14. 'I'm very privileged' to be a Premier League managerpublished at 14:21 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton Town (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Burnley

On being a Premier League manager, Vincent Kompany said: "It’s the most wonderful job in the world.

"You're constantly getting challenged, constantly finding ways to be better, make your team better and do it on the best stage in the world.

"I'm very privileged and willing to go above and beyond."

  15. 'Both teams will be feeling confident'published at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton Town (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Burnley

On how his side has developed and opponents Luton, Vincent Kompany said: "I think the biggest thing is that at the start of the campaign, there was a clear gap between us and most of the teams we were facing.

"But for 12 games that hasn’t been there anymore. We can make it happen against anyone on a good day and I can say similar for Luton.

"Both teams will be feeling confident in improving in the league but tomorrow, the importance of the game is to turn around the performance."

On the pressure of being in the relegation zone, Kompany added: "I'd hope that we like pressure, we like to be in a pressured environment. What club are you if you don’t want pressure? This year is the same type of pressure [as the Championship], being able to stay in the league."

  16. 'We're managing expectations' of the transfer windowpublished at 14:16 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton Town (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Burnley

On the transfer window, Vincent Kompany said : "I'll be honest, there's a big chance we do some strengthening in couple of positions, but we're managing expectations.

"It will be difficult to bring in the real, immediate gamechangers but we can use extra depth in the squad."

Speaking about the option of younger players starting, Kompany added: "I want players to be good enough for the Premier League. The real discussion is about strategy, it's having players that can play at this level.

"It's important to have balance, being able to play at this level, you need legs and be strong on the ball, smart, think tactically. The entry level is really high and you can get exposed."

  17. Beckenbauer 'was the complete centre-back'published at 14:13 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Burnley v Luton Town (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    Burnley

On the death of Franz Beckenbauer, Vincent Kompany said: "He was everything, reading the game, intercepting but also stepping in and scoring goals.

"He was the complete centre-back, as much as we try to re-educate centre-backs, he did it in an era where it was almost, I don’t want to say rare, but an era where you didn't see it.

"I always knew he was a reference."

  19. Sheffield United - 'Wilder will believe it can be done'published at 14:08 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    Sheffield United

    Chris WilderImage source, Getty Images

The Blades have turned to Chris Wilder to dig them out of a deep hole following the sacking of Paul Heckingbottom and the optimistic Wilder will believe it can be done. He is an ideal man for the job, not just because of his past history with the club but also his ability.

Much will rest on whether Ben Brereton Diaz can provide goals after joining on loan from Villarreal. Wilder will whip up the atmosphere at Bramall Lane to provide a source of inspiration - but it will be quite the feat if they stay up.

    McNulty's pre-season prediction: 19th.

  20. Burnley - 'I'm not quite convinced'published at 14:04 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    Burnley

    Vincent KompanyImage source, Getty Images

Burnley have shown signs of life at times but I feel there has also been a reluctance to adapt to changing circumstances - and leagues - by manager Vincent Kompany.

Sticking by principles is fine but the purist football that got Burnley out of the Championship has also looked lightweight and fraught with danger against top-flight opponents. I thought Burnley might have enough to stay up. I'm not quite as convinced any more.

    McNulty's pre-season prediction: 17th.
