RE Alan at 08:05 - not sure how Spurs being entertaining but not winning sums them up when they’re a point off top 4 and won 5 out of their last 7 games with only 1 loss. Weird take.

Elsewhere, Victor Osimhen's quick-fire equaliser spared Nigeria a shock defeat against Equatorial Guinea in their opening game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

  14. 'It's a difficult game' - McKinlay on Robins testpublished at 09:35 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Bristol City v West Ham (Tue 19:45 GMT)

    West Ham United

West Ham assistant manager Billy McKinlay says Bristol City will pose a tough test in Tuesday's FA Cup third-round replay at Ashton Gate.

Eight days ago, the two sides drew 1-1 at the London Stadium and the winner of the replay will face either Nottingham Forest or Blackpool at home in the fourth round.

"It's a difficult game," said McKinlay. "We had no surprises in the first game. I think they've fully deserved their draw.

"We had some opportunities to probably increase our lead after we scored early, but the game was really difficult and going there it will be a full house, a midweek FA Cup replay and a big game with a good atmosphere, so we're looking forward to it. We're confident we can produce a performance that will hopefully put us through."

  15. McKinlay tight-lipped on transfer businesspublished at 09:31 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Bristol City v West Ham (Tue 19:45 GMT)

    West Ham United

Billy McKinlay refused to be drawn on the Hammers' transfer plans this month.

"I'm probably the wrong person to be asking that question," said West Ham's assistant manager. "January is always a difficult month in which to do business and we'll continue to work with the players we have got."

Following injuries to attackers Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio, and Mohammed Kudus' absence due to the Africa Cup of Nations, the Hammers have recently been linked with a number of attacking targets, including wingers Steven Bergwijn (Ajax), Jack Clarke (Sunderland) and Jonathan Rowe (Norwich City).

  16. West Ham 'used to fixture congestion'published at 09:24 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Bristol City v West Ham (Tue, 19:45 GMT)

    West Ham United

West Ham United assistant manager Billy McKinlay has said the Hammers are used to fixture congestion in what is their third successive season in Europe.

In a period where West Ham were supposed to have two weeks off between games, a 1-1 draw against Bristol City in the FA Cup eight days ago means they will face the Robins in a replay at Ashton Gate on Tuesday night.

Speaking after comments from striker Michail Antonio about scheduling the replay in the Premier League winter break, McKinlay said it is something David Moyes' side are familiar with.

"I've not seen those quotes. The way they've structured the breaks is hybrid, so they struggle to fit the fixtures in, so I've not really looked too deeply into the fixture dates.

"The players play a lot of games and the fixture calendar is congested, but that's the way it is.

"Our players are certainly used to having this number of games and we're delighted we're progressing in so many competitions."

West Ham will play a minimum of 51 matches this season in all competitions. The Hammers played 57 in the 2022/23 campaign and 56 in the 2021/22 season.

  17. Paqueta and Bowen to miss Bristol City replaypublished at 09:17 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Bristol City v West Ham (Tue, 19:45 GMT)

    West Ham United

West Ham assistant manager Billy McKinlay has confirmed that Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen will both miss Tuesday's FA Cup third-round replay at Bristol City.

Both suffered injuries in the 1-1 draw with the Robins eight days ago, having combined for West Ham's early goal, scored by Bowen.

"Lucas Paqueta is not available and the same for Jarrod Bowen," said McKinlay. "We'll determine their availability for future games after tomorrow.

"We're short a couple of players so we'll have to make some changes."

Right, West Ham United assistant manager Billy McKinlay is speaking to the media before the Hammers' FA Cup third-round replay at Bristol City on Tuesday.

David Moyes' side were held to a 1-1 draw in their original meeting eight days ago, when Jarrod Bowen's early goal was cancelled out by a second-half strike from Tommy Conway.

Midfielder Lucas Paqueta, centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos and forward Bowen all suffered injuries in the draw with the Robins and are set to miss out, while centre-back Nayef Aguerd and winger Mohammed Kudus are both away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

McKinlay is expected to be asked about the club's transfer business. They have been linked with Sunderland's Jack Clarke and Norwich City's Jonathan Rowe, while winger Said Benrahma is among those to have been touted to leave the club in January.

  20. Financial Fair Play D-Daypublished at 09:05 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Perhaps the most significant football event of the week will not involve a pitch or players - at least in the conventional sense.

The Premier League will confirm today whether any of the 20 top-flight clubs have breached profit and sustainability rules and if they have been charged.

The process has been streamlined to ensure charges are dealt with during the reporting period in question - to avoid the scenario they have ended up in with Everton, who were deducted 10 points this season even though their breaches took place outside the relevant reporting period.

Worrying for everyone at Goodison Park, Everton and Nottingham Forest are amongst those thought to be most at risk.

And, before anyone mentions Manchester City, their case is historic and so complicated, it would not have been part of the fast-track process even if those rules had been in place when they were charged.
