Carla Ward's side so nearly forced a winner late on but the Robins held on for what could be a vital point in their battle to stay in the WSL.

Here's how the WSL table looks after today's result.

Aston Villa stay eighth, while Bristol City remain bottom of the table, two points from safety.

It's an important point for Lauren Smith's side as they close to within two points of safety.

Bristol City didn't create much in the match and you can hardly call Carrie Jones' goal a chance.

It was a 25-yard stunner. A goal that deserved to mean something and it did - just!

Aston Villa had 36 shots in total, their most in a WSL game this season, but converted only two of them.

As a result, Villa have now dropped a league-high 14 points from winning positions this season.

I still can't quite get over that mad scramble in added time at the end of added time.

It was Mayumi Pacheco who nearly forced the ball home. Her effort was cleared off the line then it was Ebony Salmon's shot that went through the legs of a defender and somehow diverted wide by Shae Yanez.

Even before that, Villa had more than enough chances to win the game. They just couldn't take them.

Rachel Daly has a free header from 10 yards out from the resulting corner but Shae Yanez is able to save and hold.

That's the last action of the match. Bristol City hold on for what could be a crucial point.

Aston Villa will be wondering quite how they didn't win that match. It's a first WSL draw of the season for them.

OFF THE LINE!

How has that not gone in for Aston Villa?! They think it has but the officials disagree.

It's an almighty scramble after a free-kick is launched into the box. Several Villa players try and swipe the ball towards goal.

They eventually manage it but Bristol City have players back on the line and they just about manage to clear before Ebony Salmon's shot is deflected millimetres wide.

Good work from Ebony Salmon inside the Bristol City box but the visitors are able to smash the ball clear.

Sarah Mayling puts a cross in from deep on the right, Simone Magill gets her head on it but it sails harmlessly wide.

Bristol City are nearly there.

Shae Yanez is booked for time-wasting after dallying over the goal kick.

Time is running out for Aston Villa.

Kenza Dali takes. The ball is flicked on at the near post and runs invitingly for Jordan Nobbs in acres of space at the far post.

She takes her time but then thumps the ball over the bar. Big chance!

We're into five added minutes as Bristol City hack the ball clear following a penalty-box scramble.

Can they hold on?

Into the final minute of the 90 and Aston Villa are throwing everything they've got at Bristol City.

What a block! Fantastic defending from Naomi Layzell to deny Rachel Daly what looked a certain goal.

Daly was played through, just the keeper to beat but just as pulled the trigger, Layzell slid across to block the shot.

Brilliant defending.

Kenza Dali has a go from 20 yards but her shot trickles wide.

Rachel Daly tries to divert it goalwards but looked to be in an offside postion.

It should be 3-2 to Aston Villa!

Simone Magill puts in a low ball from the left, Rachel Daly appears to leave it with Ebony Salmon in a better position behind her.

But Salmon stabs the ball wide of the near post. Bristol City survive...

Bristl City sub Shania Hayles is booked for a foul midway inside her own half.

Aston Villa can't make the most of the free-kick, though. Straight into the arms of Shae Yanez from Kenza Dali.

Shae Yanez is OK to continue and play resumes with the corner.

Cleared by Bristol City. Still plenty of time for a winning goal...

This could go either way.

Villa go close through Kenza Dali. It's a thumping effort from the edge of the area and a slight deflection takes it over the bar.

Corner to the home side but there will be a delay before it's taken, Shae Yanez is down again.
