Another very interesting evening in the English Football League comes to a conclusion - thank you for being with us this evening.

Our next live text coverage from the EFL is from the Championship on Friday, when Sheffield Wednesday host Birmingham City.

Hope you can join us then - it's goodbye for now.

  2. 'I think the referee made the right call'published at 22:13 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February

    Cambridge A-A Bolton

Bolton manager Ian Evatt: "I think we have got one Tuesday free until the end of the season, so that's that gone.

"It's a challenge, it's a test but there's no way we could have played on that pitch.

"I think we've both got a free Tuesday two weeks from now, let's just get it on as soon as we can.

"All I saw was what happened at Burton. The pitch was perfectly fine and then two hours later it was waterlogged.

"I could see the level of the rainfall. It's a really good pitch actually but when the pitches are as good as that it seemed to pool and waterlog really quickly. Once it started to pool, it was only going to get worse.

"Both teams wanted to play tonight. The conditions suit probably one team more than the other, but that's football.

"I think the referee made the right call."

  3. 'I'm frustrated but accept it'published at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February

    Cambridge A-A Bolton

Cambridge manager Neil Harris: "From our perspective, we wanted the game to be played because we thought the weather conditions sort of fell in our favour a little bit here against a really good football side.

"I understand the referee's decision and the EFL's decision and I've got no complaints about it. I just think it's unfortunate. I thought it had the makings to be a really good game.

"We could all see what was coming. You could see the ball just stop rolling. I think George Thomas ran past the ball at one stage because it had stopped. So you knew the moment was coming, you just hoped that the rain lays off a bit and the pitch has got time to recover.

"It's not just the players, its the fans. How long do you wait while you leave the fans in the cold and wet?

"I'm disappointed and frustrated because we're on a great run and I was really looking forward to the game.

"I thought the conditions tonight suited us to make it a real scrap. So I'm frustrated but accept it."

We had a postponement apiece in League One and League Two this evening, and then Cambridge's game with Bolton in the third tier was abandoned after nine minutes because persistent rain had, in the opinion of the officials, made the surface unplayable.

Did both managers agree with the decision? In a word - yes. More words from both will follow.

Port Vale cannot continue in the way they are. That's, what, three wins in 24 games now?

Hopefully they can appoint a new manager soon because they're going to need as much time as possible to implement their ideas.

There was no threat. There was no urgency. If I was in that changing room, I'd be saying 'if you leave this club, you've got Port Vale relegated - where are you going?'

I'd have given them a rocket. Whether they change the structure of what they do during the week or get them in one by one, something's got to change.

I've seen a performance tonight - when a manager's been sacked and you could go into the bottom four - with no heart.

'No desire' is the biggest criticism you can give of a player. That should cripple them inside - and I'm not sure it does.

The bottom of the League One table makes better reading for Reading fans. Of course they'd prefer to be further up, but they are now out of the bottom four thanks to their win at Stevenage and Port Vale's loss at home to Leyton Orient.

Vale, who sacked manager Andy Crosby on Monday, have games in hand on the teams around them but you feel their next managerial choice will be key for their survival chances.

Meanwhile, Fleetwood's second successive win lifts them above Cheltenham to 22nd position and within six points of safety.

A very strange night at the top of League One, with the biggest winners being the teams that didn't play.

Bolton's match with Cambridge was abandoned after nine minutes so they were unable to make up any ground on Portsmouth or Derby, though they will do it all again at a later date.

Neither were Peterborough, who led at half-time against Exeter but then scored two own goals to lose in Devon.

Slightly further down, Stevenage were beaten at home by Reading so they remain sixth.

Leyton Orient's outstanding run of form continued with a 1-0 win at Port Vale, though, and they are now within seven points of the top six. They have the look of a side that does very little for five months, then arrives late from nowhere and in form towards the end of a season and then ends up winning the play-offs.

    • Reading win 1-0 at play-off contenders Stevenage to move out of the bottom four, with managerless Port Vale dropping into the relegation zone as a result of their 1-0 loss at home to in-form Leyton Orient.
    • Struggling Fleetwood score a goal in each half at Bristol Rovers to register a second consecutive win and move within six points of safety in League One. Veteran striker Chris Martin was sent off in stoppage time for the home side.
    • Cambridge v Bolton was abandoned after nine minutes because of a waterlogged pitch. Earlier, Burton v Cheltenham and Walsall v Morecambe were called off following heavy, persistent rain across the Midlands today.

FT: Port Vale 0-1 Leyton Orient

There was a lack of intensity and effort, for me, from Vale.

You can lose a game of football but you have to get at them and work hard.

FT: Port Vale 0-1 Leyton Orient

    Phil Bowers

The boos ring out around Vale Park - not just for tonight, but for what's happened over the last few days, which has caused so much aggro among Vale fans.

Whoever comes in as manager has a real job to get confidence into a team which looks like it's on its last legs.

  13. 'Huge for Royals' morale'published at 21:47 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February

    FT: Stevenage 0-1 Reading

    Mick Gooding
Ex-Reading player/manager on BBC Radio Berkshire

The Reading fans are so, so happy. I'm sure they realise they're out of the relegation zone. They're not leaving anytime soon.

It's huge for morale. The players have worked their socks off for them this evening and they can be proud as punch.

  14. 'Players run to celebrate with fans'published at 21:45 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February

    FT: Stevenage 0-1 Reading

    Tim Dellor
    BBC Berkshire sport editor

The celebrations in Stevenage are for Reading, who have a second away win of the season.

The players, suddenly energised, run over to their fans to celebrate.

You have to go back to February 2021 for their last midweek away win. Spare a thought for the manager, as well, who's turned it around - it's one defeat in 11 now.

They now have a massive game at home to Charlton on Saturday.

  15. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February

    Port Vale 0-1 Leyton Orient

The captain has won it for Orient with Idris El Mizouni's second-half goal.

Orient move to within seven points of the play-offs as their superb run continues - six wins in eight games now with two draws.

    Port Vale have big problems.

Without a manager, they barely landed a punch tonight and have ended up in the bottom four after Reading's victory.

    Exeter 2-1 Peterborough

    Well can you believe that?

Peterborough, looking to go second in the table, led through Harrison Burrows' first-half penalty and were dominant.

But after Michael Olakigbe missed a great chance for 2-0, he was sent off for a second yellow card.

And then it all changed with two own goals inside five minutes!

First Reece Cole's free-kick was turned in by goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic before a cross from Cole was nudged into his own net by right-back Jadel Katongo.

Back-to-back wins have given Fleetwood real hope of avoiding relegation from League One.

Ronan Coughlan's turn and shot gave the visitors a half-time lead and Jayden Stockley's header sealed all three points for Charlie Adam's side.
