Just give Ten Hag time, another season at least you can see how he's trying to play which will be very good when he actually has the players that can do it.

  2. 'We were disciplined and controlled'published at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 30 March 2024

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Wolves

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports: "Yes, we did really well. The first 20 minutes we started a bit soft in everything. Even when we scored [the offside goal] we then conceded some big chances.

"Then we controlled it better. In the first half we were suffering a bit with Nelson Semedo and Pablo Sarabia. We tried to reduce that better in the second half. We were disciplined and had control of the game more or less, even when they dominated a little bit, we were defensively focused to do well.

"We were speaking before the match about the injuries we had and we needed to try to work with every player in the season.

"I want more of course. To score a goal in different ways is very important. But overall I am happy because we were very organised in the 90 minutes and we did well to create our chances to score. We are happy for Ezri Konsa but we have to try to think about how to get better options for every player to score goals.

"The challenge we have is to go to Manchester City [next]. We have to try to prepare the best possible way with the players we have. We have to try to do our best and keep going to be consistent. We are happy with the three points today and it is very important so we need to enjoy that as well."

On Ollie Watkins' substitution at half-time: "He was feeling something in his hamstring and I think we have to wait for tomorrow. Hopefully it's not a big injury but it's his hamstring."

    • Brentford have lost seven of their past nine league meetings with Manchester United, but they did win this fixture 4-0 last season.
    • United's seven league visits to Brentford have produced 30 goals, an average of 4.3 per game. Both of their top-flight defeats at the Bees have been by a 4-0 scoreline (October 1936 and August 2022).
    • Erik ten Hag's side have won just one of their past eight Premier League away games against London sides, and have lost four of their past five.
    • Only the bottom two sides, Burnley and Sheffield United , have lost more Premier League games than Brentford this season. Since a three-game winning run in October/November, the Bees have won just three of their past 18.
    • United have won more games by a one-goal margin - 12 of their 15 victories - than any other side in the Premier League this season.

Lights are being switched on and off and phones are being held in the air, as feels to be the norm these days pre kick-off.

There's also some funky soundtrack playing as some chap wanders around one of the goalmouths prodding holes in the ground.

Here's a reminder of the teams as we wait for the players to come onto the pitch.

  5. 'I hope Chiwome enjoyed debut'published at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 30 March 2024

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Wolves

    Wolves

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil speaking to PLP: "Disappointed with the result but that's about all I'm disappointed with. Felt the lads gave everything. We know how good a side they are. More possession, more shots, higher expected goals, but that doesn't help us much. Proud of the players to come here. There was no giving up or excuses made and it wasn't quite enough but we have to accept that.

"We were the better team by a mile for the first part but then somehow we end up being 1-0 down from that spell. You can tell Aston Villa fans were slightly surprised and going 1-0 then relaxes the place. In terms of what we asked the boys to give in terms of fighting and creating opportunities, it was a good performance than on another day, could have led to some points.

"Some really tired lads. Rayan Ait-Nouri did two lots of 90 minutes and didn't look himself today. We registered 19 players out of the possible 25. We had 11 fit senior players to work with but that performance there, I will sign up to any time. We have a few issues at the moment but we're on 41 points which is a massive achievement. We will keep pushing to get as many [points] as we can and get as high up the table as we can."

On 18-year-old Leon Chiwome making his debut: "Yeah, he did really well considering he hasn't trained with us much. I've only met him three or four times on the training pitch but he worked his socks off and made a few runs in behind. I hope he enjoyed bits of it because he's worked hard to get that moment.

"I didn't make a big thing of it. I just named him in the team and he's earned the right to be in and around it. The injury situation has maybe accelerated it for him but I'm pleased with the way the other lads supported him. Hopefully we can get a win on his next one."

  6. 'When they come back they'll give some real attacking threat the boys'published at 19:51 Greenwich Mean Time 30 March 2024

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Wolves

    Wolves

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil, speaking to Sky Sports: "really disappointed with the result, we didn't come here to lose. Performance wise, they gave loads. Higher possession, higher xG. You add Pedro Neto, Cunha to that xG and I'm sure it would have mattered. We take it on the chin and we get ready for Tuesday.

"We end up 1-0 down and it relieves pressure around the place even though we were having load and loads of joy. It's one we have to take and get ready for Burnley.

"Some big moments either end, two of theirs go in and ours didn't. I can only ask them to give as much as they did and they did. We can tidy up on some of the goals. In terms of the team and giving everything, they did that.

"Cunha is doing great, miles ahead off schedule. He wanted to be involved today but we needed to be steady. Pedro is more serious. When they come back they'll give some real attacking threat the boys already available."

  7. 'Another tricky evening for Man Utd'published at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 30 March 2024

Brentford v Man Utd (20:00 GMT)

This is an interesting one. Brentford thumped Manchester United 4-0 in this fixture last season but the Bees are in terrible form at the moment with just one point from their past six games.

Manchester United beat them at Old Trafford in October but only after two Scott McTominay goals in stoppage time, and they are not exactly flying either.

United will score but I can still see this being another tricky evening for Erik ten Hag's side, and they might have to settle for a point.

    Prediction: 2-2

Erik ten Hag says he does not care about speculation surrounding his job as Manchester United boss.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos group is reportedly considering a coaching overhaul this summer.

England boss Gareth Southgate has been linked but said that was "completely disrespectful" as it is Ten Hag's job.

"You know at Man United there will always be noise, rumours around the club, the manager, the players," Ten Hag said.

"We are focusing on the process, we are focusing on the team to play better, to improve the way of play, so I don't care about [it]."

  10. 'It's been a perfect week'published at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 30 March 2024

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Wolves

    Aston Villa

More from Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa speaking to PLP: "It's been a perfect week, making my debut for England. To top it off with a win and a goal, I'm really pleased for myself and the boys.

"Yeah I meant it! Na, I saw Jhon [Duran] coming in at the back post so I was hoping to give him an assist. I'm really pleased. I think it was my first goal in two, almost three years.

"We know our last performance at home wasn't good enough. We wanted to give the fans something to cheer about today and that's what we did.

"[Emiliano Martinez] is the best goalkeeper in the world for a reason. Sometimes he keeps us in games and that's what he did today.

"It's hard to put into words. It was a dream come true to make my England debut and it's something I've been working hard on. I want to continue working and learning so that's what I'm going to do."

  11. 'We knew we had to win after Tottenham's result'published at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 30 March 2024

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Wolves

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, speaking to Sky Sports: "The pefect week. We spoke before and wanted to get the win and focus on our game. We got the three points and I amanged to grab a goal myself. I meant it and I'm really pleased.

"I believe in myself and ever since the boss has come in, I've grown a lot as a player and a man and I want to continue doing that under the boss.

"We knew we had to win after Tottenham's result earlier and we did that.

"I don't remember the last time we had a clean sheet. it's always good to keep the ball out the net as a defender.

"We've had a few injuries to key players this season but we've managed to get results when it matters. The games have been coming thick and fast."

  12. 'Villa going deep in Europe as well as challenging for top four'published at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 30 March 2024

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Wolves

    Paul Robinson
Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

The impressive thing from Aston Villa this season is that they are going deep in Europe while challenging for the Champions League spots in the Premier League.

They go back into fourth with a strong win at home today, and it certainly seems like they have their confidence back. They have a tough run of games ahead, Man City away next on Tuesday, Brentford then Lille in the quarter-final of the Europa League, but they are giving themselves a chance on both fronts.

  13. Postpublished at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 30 March 2024

Brentford v Man Utd (20:00 GMT)

The international break didn't really come at a good time for Manchester United as they no doubt would have liked to quickly carry on the momentum from their FA Cup win against Liverpool.

Brentford, however, will have welcomed the break from Premier League action as they look to regroup and turn around their form so that they are no longer looking over their shoulder.

They go into this game just four points above the relegation zone, so a win this evening would be massive for them.

    FT: Aston Villa 2-0 Wolves

    Paul Robinson
Former Tottenham and England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Villa looked comfortable at times today, a really, really good performance. Had a game plan, use pace on the counter attack, the subs that Unai Emery made, particularly Nicolo Zaniolo all made a good impact too.

Wolves can't get their key players back fit quick enough, yes it was fantastic to see the young players get a chance, but it was all too much for them against an experienced Villa side today.
