Bayern Munich have been eliminated on the last seven occasions they have lost a Champions League first leg, a run going back to 2015.

  2. 'It's why we started playing from early age'published at 22:40 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

    FT: Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

Lazio captain Ciro Immobile to Amazon Prime: "We worked and prepared for this game to have our say.

"I was convinced that the team would give everything. I had said to give our fans a night to remember and we succeeded. Before and after the goal we had other chances. Maybe we had to be better at taking advantage of them, but overall it's OK.

"Playing these games gives you enormous professional satisfaction. And sharing these moments with the fans is why we started playing from an early age."

  3. 'Bayern will get hammered by the media'published at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

Former England midfielder on TNT Sports

Everyone is going to get hammered in the media, players and coaches, and rightly so. Bayern Munich were favourites, Thomas Tuchel is a world-class coach, the players are world class and rightly so.

When you play for the big teams, when you play like that, you are going to get criticised. Frustration will be huge in and around Bayern right now.

  4. 'I can't explain it'published at 22:35 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

    FT: Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel: "We're frustrated and angry about the defeat. I think we lost the game, I'm not sure Lazio won it.

"I'm not sure why we lost our conviction in the second half, but we did, and then we fell behind. I can't explain it because we told the team to maintain their intensity and be even braver going forward, but we seemed to lose face at the start of the half.

"There are things we can build on. In the first half, we created some good chances, some big chances and one huge one with Jamal [Musiala], but in the end we didn't have a single shot on target, so it's clear you can't win a game like that.

"But we've got a second leg and, obviously in conjunction with the last result, it doesn't look great, but we'll keep working hard."

Real Sociedad conceded as many goals tonight as they did in the entire group stage of the Champions League (two in six games).

This was their first defeat in European competition since March 2023 (0-2 v Roma), ending a seven-match unbeaten run.

  6. 'We know we have it in us, even if we didn't show it tonight'published at 22:29 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

    FT: Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller told DAZN: "From my perspective, we produced a reaction in the first half. We should definitely have taken the lead in the first half.

"If we're talking about a reaction, you can't always discuss the result – which is of course a nice end product for a reaction – but first and foremost, we're talking about our approach.

"In terms of conceding chances, we barely let anything through, but we also missed opportunities to convert our own. We had three clear-cut goalscoring opportunities in the first half and, to have that many chances inside one half of a Champions League away game in Rome, then you have to convert them.

"The second half was then impacted by our insecurity, but it's not to say that we didn't produce a reaction. We've lost 1-0 here tonight, but based on the way the game went, a 1-0 loss is OK for me. We've got a second leg.

"Our quality and our expectations as a club is that in moments like these, we stick together. We will give everything we have in every competition until the very last second.

"That's what opponents have to be ready for and we'll see what we get out of it. Optimistic is the wrong word, but I'm confident. We know we have it in us, even if we didn't show it tonight. And who's to say things won't look a lot different in three weeks' time."

  7. 'Kane won't have faced the type of intensity Bayern will get'published at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

    FT: Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on TNT Sports

This will be a big test for Harry Kane, character wise, and mentally. I think he is mentally strong but this is new environment and he won't have known anything like this intensity and the amount of news coverage they'll be getting in Munich.

Trust me, having played at Manchester United, you feel the pressure, it is seeping out of everyone.

I suspect it will be the same there. The experienced boys have to be a big roll in galvanising the troops.

We have to mention, Harry Kane.

He is not having the same sort of impact in the last couple of weeks that he did earlier on in the season. He looks a shadow of that player now.

On and off the pitch he has lost that form we saw from him at the start of the campaign.

Last season City beating Bayern looked like the win of the year, but now it just looks like a standard win. How the mighty have fallen.

PSG are easily the most overrated team I’ve ever seen. They have and have had household names but consistently lose to Europe’s elite. Messi going there in the only exciting thing that’s happened there in 10 years.

  10. 'Best news for Bayern is that they have time to recover form'published at 22:21 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

    Raphael Honigstein
German football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

Too many big names are out of shape, out of form, out of confidence and things are just not quite clicking for Bayern.

The best news for them, apart from the fact that the tie stands only at 1-0, is that the return game is in three weeks. This will give them some time to recover their form.

If this game was any time soon, this team does not look like they have it in them to play anywhere near their strengths to get a result.

  11. 'We are optimistic'published at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

    FT: PSG 2-0 Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino speaking to Movistar: "Things are not a coincidence in football, this is now two games in a row we have let in a goal on a dead ball.

"It’s true that just before Kylian Mbappé scored, we had the bad luck to receive a hit on the player who was supposed to mark him, putting another player who isn’t used to being in that position there.

"These details mark the difference at this level. Against a rival of this quality, you have to avoid even the slightest of mistake and today we have two or three and they scored two goals.

"We are satisfied with the work effort, we have seen that when we do things well we can compete with them and we will go back to our stadium with our fans and give this all the energy in the world."

On the second leg: "We are optimistic, in the end this is football. Two goals is nothing and at home, with our fans pushing as we have done in the last games in the Champions League, I think we have a chance.

"It’s all about being efficient, about scoring goals, which is what we haven’t done lately but we know that with our fans we can do it."

Thomas Tuchel has lost 10 of his 43 matches as Bayern boss.

Sometimes when things aren't going your way every little mistake becomes a big highlighted factor and it amounts to a penalty, a goal or a big situation at the football club.

When it is such big club like Bayern Munich where every little factor is highlighted it becomes a soap opera every weekend and that is where they are at the moment.

  14. 'We're in a difficult spell'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

    FT: Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane to TNT Sports: "Really tough week. In the first half we started well and had clear chances, one for myself. In these games they're big momemts.

"The second half was disappointing. We came out with less energy and less confidence. We got punished. Once you go down to 10 men it's always difficult.

"We have to find it among ourselves. We're still in the race for the Bundesliga and in this tie. We have to keep fighting.

"We're in a difficult spell. We have to fight. We have to turn it round. We have big games and big things to fight for. We're not out of it, we will never give up. We just need to turn it around. One game or spark can turn it round."

  15. Postpublished at 22:13 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February

    FT: Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have failed to score in two consecutive games for the first time since May 2015, when they went three without a goal under Pep Guardiola.

Bayern are playing ugly football. It is ugly.

I wouldn't bet against Lazio going there and stifling them again. Bayern have a lack of confidence, they are in a rut and I don't see how they are going to get out of it before the second leg.

If they don't have good results in the league before then I don't know how they turn it around.

Thoroughly deserved by Lazio. Bayern were woeful, no ideas or imagination (Musiala apart) and Lazio could have scored more at the end.
